Some browning and use but good-plus in slightly frayed dust-wrapper. "In the Springer Spaniel world the name of Dorothy Morland Hooper stands for knowledge of the breed in all its aspects. Miss Hooper now gives us the benefits of her fifty years experience. I have no hesitation whatever in stating that this is the best book on any breed of gundog that I have ever read. it is staggering in its comprehensiveness and detail." (Peter Moxon writing in the Shooting Times). A well thought-of book that ran to many editions. The second, and subsequent, editions were revised by Ian B. Hampton following Hooper's death in April 1970. For this fourth edition Hampton states "Very little alteration has been made to the main text but some additional material has been included at the end of certain chapters. From dust jacket: In this book the author has provided a really practical guide to dog breeding, with all the detail which is only possible in a book devoted entirely to the subject and which is the result of her own experience and observation. Condition: new. (Hardcover, 1964). (1951) 1964 6th edition. Small 8vo (125 x 192mm). Pp104. B/w line drawings. Blue boards, spine titled in black. Slight use and browning but good copy in frayed, price-clipped dust-wrapper. Wise and straight-forward advice on rearing puppies from an author of long experience. "I think this little book has fulfilled its purpose in helping the new breeder in the fascinating tasks of rearing puppies. It seemed to me that there was a need for such a book, and I well remember that when I started breeding in 1936 I lookedin vain for a book of this type. It has made the writer many friends and I believe that it has found its way into veterinary libraries as well as city libraries. Since the book was first written, veterinary science has marched ahead, especially with regard to immunisation, and these recent discoveries have been incorporated here. For comments on these and other veterinary matters I owe my veterinary surgeon, Mr. Andrew Edgson, a big debt of gratitude." (From the author's preface to the 1964 sixth edition). Chapters include:- Before the puppy is born - choice of brood; Breeding - choice of sire; The oestrum - sending to the stud dog; The diet and care of the pregnant bitch; The veterinary surgeon and the breeder; Preparations for whelping; Whelping; The first week after whelping; Early infancy - parturient eclampsia; Early kennel arrangements; Weaning; Worming; Exercise and housing of young puppies; Handling and training hints; Minor ailments; Distemper, 'hard pad' and viral hepatitis - immunisation and prevention; Teething and simple medicines; Exhibiting puppies; Do's and don'ts. .

A complete guide to training all breeds of hunting dogs. The author is a proponent of humane methods of training dogs rather than "breaking" them as was the standard method until General W. N. Hutchinson, a lover of dogs and horses, wrote a book in 1849, outlining his method of training which relied on kindness and reinforcement rather than brute force.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by Hay Hutchison (illustrator). Second Edition. (no dust jacket, but is protected by a custom-cut plastic jacket) [slight bumping and modest wear to corners and spine ends; one-time owner's name and circumstances of the book's purchase in ink at the top of the Foreword page; several chow-related newspaper clippings glued to otherwise mostly blank pages in both the front and rear of the book]. (line drawings) As the title says. This is the second edition of a book first published in 1928, one of a number of similarly-titled volumes in the "Popular Dog" series ("The Popular Pekingese," "The Popular Cocker Spaniel," you get the idea; nine different titles, including this one, are advertised at the end of the volume). The co-author, Mrs. Baer (of Baltimore), contributed only Chapter VIII, entitled "The Chow Chow in America." This edition has its own introduction, by Alice O. Fullerton, operator (or perhaps just resident) of "The Nea Kennels, Polshot Farm, Elstead, Godalming, Surrey." ("Godalming" sounds something like what I uttered when I read that address for the first time.) I wonder if the publisher had a subsidiary called Unpopular Dogs Publishing Company?.
