Front endpapers of Vol. 1 reproduced from a map of the city of Zurich in 1576. Original publisher's crimson cloth with gilt coat-of-arms on upper covers lettered gilt on spines. Presentation copy: 'A. C. Crombie, Scots-Austr liensi, inter praeceptores suos de medii aevi rebus naturalibus principi haec volumina. Auctor Coll. Reg. Abredoneusi 29. ii. 62.' Alistair Cameron Crombie (1915 Ð 1996) was an Australian historian of science who began his career as a zoologist, contributing to the research on competition in species. William Persehouse Delisle Wightman (1899 Ð 1983) spent years on research and says in the introduction, 'The lengthy and careful examination of every one of the books listed, however, put me (or so I have dared to hope) in a position whence a new view of the course of scientific thought in the Renaissance could be gained.' Upper cover of volume 2 a little rubbed, otherwise a very good set. Slight rubbing, faint mottling at edges otherwise very good.
