Seller: Oak Knoll Books, ABAA, ILAB, NEW CASTLE, DE, U.S.A.
original printed wrappers. tall 8vo. original printed wrappers. pp. 26-52; two leaves ads at rear; full-page illustrated ad at rear wrapper (woodcut by Shourds, of street view of Haynes & Lawton, "Manufactures of Extra Quality Silver-Plated ware, on White Metal. Market St., under Grand Hotel"). Much of its content identified as "Written for the Leisure Moments," including a poem, "Yosemite," by James Ryan (at p. 41), and "Noah Webster's First Love," by J. A. R. (presenting "facts . obtained from some old acquaintances of Noah Webster . [and] omitted by his biographers"). The last page of text contains notice of difficulty in production: "The first sixteen pages of this magazine went to press about the middle of January, and the final sixteen pages were nearly ready by the 25th of the same month, but although almost ready for press, nothing further was done for a month, and consequently, through neglect, the February number of this magazine is a month behind time. We shall take care in [the] future that it will not occur again. We are not sure about publishing a March number, but most likely we will." Little record of this publication is found. An example of the first issue (Jan. 1872) is held by the American Antiquarian Society, with note that it "Ceased Feb. 1872. - Cf. California amateur's directory for 1873" and "Absorbed in part: Far West (San Francisco, Calif.)." One or more issues of this title are held by the San Francisco Public Library, in a bound volume containing several other titles ("Bound with: The Vindicator;p and: Our Boys and Girls"; and "Binder's title: Young California Magazines").
