It is also written as a serious foundation in Astronomy for amateurs who want to take a more detailed approach than can be found in the bulk of introductory astronomy books. Almost every aspect of astronomy is considered, from Earth and its place in the solar system, through instrumentation, the planets, stars, and galaxies, to black holes and the beginnings of cosmology. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to get to know astronomy in detail, as quickly as possible. 252 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Developments in technology have made it possible for speech output to be used in place of the more usual visual interface in both domestic and commercial devices. Speech can be used in situations where visual attention is occupied, such as when driving a car, or where a task is complex and traditional visual interfaces are not effective, such as programming a video recorder. Speech can also be employed in specialist adaptations for visually impaired people. However, the use of speech has not been universally successful, possibly because the speech interaction is poorly designed. Speech is fundamentally different from text, and a lot of the problems may arise due to simplified text-to-speech conversion. Design of Speech-based Devices considers the problems associated with speech interaction, and offers practical solutions. 196 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Many problems in operator theory lead to the consideration ofoperator equa tions, either directly or via some reformulation. More often than not, how ever, the underlying space is too 'small' to contain solutions of these equa tions and thus it has to be 'enlarged' in some way. The Berberian-Quigley enlargement of a Banach space, which allows one to convert approximate into genuine eigenvectors, serves as a classical example. In the theory of operator algebras, a C\*-algebra A that turns out to be small in this sense tradition ally is enlarged to its (universal) enveloping von Neumann algebra A'. This works well since von Neumann algebras are in many respects richer and, from the Banach space point of view, A' is nothing other than the second dual space of A. Among the numerous fruitful applications of this principle is the well-known Kadison-Sakai theorem ensuring that every derivation 8 on a C\*-algebra A becomes inner in A', though 8 may not be inner in A. The transition from A to A' however is not an algebraic one (and cannot be since it is well known that the property of being a von Neumann algebra cannot be described purely algebraically). Hence, ifthe C\*-algebra A is small in an algebraic sense, say simple, it may be inappropriate to move on to A'. In such a situation, A is typically enlarged by its multiplier algebra M(A). 340 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As a teenager, Greg created independently of Kolmogorov and Solomonoff, what we call today algorithmic information theory, a sub ject of which he is the main architect. His 1965 paper on gedanken experiments on automata, which he wrote when he was in high school, is still of interest today. He was also heavily involved in IBM, where he has worked for almost thirty years, on the development of RISC technology. Greg's results are widely quoted. My favorite portrait of Greg can be found in John Horgan's-a writer for Scientific American-1996 book The End 01 Science. Greg has gotten many honors. He was a guest of distinguished people like Prigogine, the King and Queen of Belgium, and the Crown Prince of Japan. Just to be brief, allow me to paraphrase Bette Davis in All About Eve. She said, 'Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy talk!' Ladies and Gentlemen, Greg Chaitin! [Laughter & Applause] CRISTIAN CALUDE introducing GREGORY CHAITIN at the DMTCS'96 meeting at the University of Auckland. 168 pp. Englisch.
