Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Until quite recently conditions in industry were often rough. Long hours were worked in insanitary and murky workshops, often with little regard to the effects upon the workpeople who were considered to be expendable. Now, however, these adverse conditions have been recognized and so remedied that there remains little in industrial conditions to disturb the public conscience. This does not mean that conditions of work in office or factory are perfect. The obvious and dramatic abuses of the human frame may have gone, but in their place have arisen stresses and strains which, taking effect only in the long term, are generally undramatic and often unrecognized. They exist none the less. No organized effort to study the effect of working conditions on man's performance was made until the end of World War I, when the Industrial Fatigue Research Board was set up. For the first time, men trained in the human sciences entered industry to study men at work. They made con tributions which set a new standard of scientific investigation into human performance and allowed executive action on the basis of evidence rather than of hunch. The Board's work differed from the contribution of Gilbreth in America in that the principles of Motion Study which he developed were, to a large extent, based on intelligent observation rather than controlled experiment. During the 1920S the National Institute of Industrial Psychology was founded and there was close collaboration between it and the I.F.R.B. 528 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The development of immunisation has been one of the most striking features in the control of infectious disease in the twentieth century. This book takes into account the need for a simple, concise account of immunisation procedures not only in the UK and USA but also in other countries, and to this end a special chapter on immunisation in developing countries has been included. Following two introductory chapters, there are nine chapters on various diseases and the vaccines that have been developed to combat them. In each of these chapters, a short discussion of the epidemiology of the disease and the history of immun isation against it is followed by a description of the vaccine, its efficacy, contraindications to its use and future developments. The book concludes with four general chapters on vaccines for travel, vaccines for selective use, passive immunisation and immunisation in tropical environments. The demand for this book follows the popularity of a series of articles on immunisation which appeared in Update. These have been expanded and largely rewritten. I have drawn on many expert sources and have made an effort to provide a balanced and non-controversial opinion with a discussion of alternative procedures where indicated. Immunisation is intended not only for the family practitioner but also for many specialists, particularly paediatricians, community physicians, Armed Forces medical officers, and all those concerned with immigration procedures and with the spread of infectious diseases. Medical students, nurses and para medical staff will also find much of value. 164 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is intended primarily for the doctor who is confronted with an electro cardiogram and who wishes to make his own interpretation rather than to rely entirely upon the report of a specialist. The clinical use of the electrocardiogram is the sole concern here and no attempt is made to describe electrophysiology. It is hoped that by beginning with a description of the P wave and its abnormalities the reader will gain confidence and the desire to continue to subsequent sections as he realizes the simplicity of the approach. In a further attempt towards clarity and ease of reading, the text is liberally interspersed with line drawings, all originated by the author, and at the end of each section electro cardiograms are provided, illustrating the abnormalities which have been described. Interest in the electrocardiogram has now spread from the cardiologist to a wide variety of hospital staff, including medical students, house officers, intensive care and coronary care nurses, and anaesthetists. Many general practitioners now record their own electro cardiograms and most have outpatient access to the electrocardiography department of their local hospitals. This book will provide a useful basis for their reading of the electrocardiogram and I hope convince them that its interpretation is well within their capabilities. 148 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Every little wiggle has a meaning all its own. This is our underlying faith, that details of seismic waveshapes can tell us the details of the nature of the earth. But their voices are obscured by many irrelevancies. They speak in a high-noise environment, and we have been able to decipher only a small portion. However, things are looking up: better tech niques are lessening the irrelevancies, and we are learning to read. In exploration of unknown areas, determining the nature of the rocks present is often the difficult aspect. Most of the properties of rocks that can be measured at a distance are not distinctive enough to identify the rock unambiguously. Con ventionally, seismic data are used to determine aspects of the structure. Stratigraphic pictures are inferred from the struc ture, the nature of rocks exposed for examination in the sur rounding area, and regional concepts. Three points make seismic stratigraphy feasible now: (1) we have better data quality, (2) we have begun to sys tematize analysis procedures, and (3) we believe in the geologic significance of waveshape details. 252 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The extraordinarily rapid advances made in mathematics since World War II have resulted in analysis becoming an enormous organism spread ing in all directions. Gone for good surely are the days of the great French 'courses of analysis' which embodied the whole of the 'ana lytical' knowledge of the times in three volumes-as the classical work of Camille Jordan. Perhaps that is why present-day textbooks of anal ysis are disproportionately modest relative to the present state of the art. More: they have 'retreated' to the state before Jordan and Goursat. In recent years the scene has been changing rapidly: Jean Dieudon ne is offering us his monumentel Elements d'Analyse (10 volumes) written in the spirit of the great French Course d'Analyse. To the best of my knowledge, the present book is the only one of its size: starting from scratch-from rational numbers, to be precise-it goes on to the theory of distributions, direct integrals, analysis on com plex manifolds, Kahler manifolds, the theory of sheaves and vector bun dles, etc. My objective has been to show the young reader the beauty and wealth of the unsual world of modern mathematical analysis and to show that it has its roots in the great mathematics of the 19th century and mathematical physics. I do know that the young mind eagerly drinks in beautiful and difficult things, rejoicing in the fact that the world is great and teeming with adventure. 848 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Several years ago, freshly returned from a year in Stockholm but deeply en meshed in the American Malaise of the late 1960's, I sketched out an image of Swedish policy-making that defined a generalized policy-making role and sought to relate that role to both citizen attitudes and the elite political culture 1 in Sweden. Although that sketch seems to have been taken seriously by other foreigners, I think it is fair to say that the principal reaction of my Swedish friends and colleagues was amusement. When I later (1970-71) returned for another year in Stockholm, I found myself being introduced at parties as the man who had written ''that marvelously out-of-date sketch of how Swedish politics used to work-hah, hah. ' Or, I would be referred to as the American who, like Marquis Childs some years earlier, 'believed our propaganda. ' By 1970-71, of course, the Swedish political environment had become more boisterous than it had been in 1967-68. Indeed, during the course of that year my amused colleagues found themselves enmeshed in a strike action against the government that was part of an emotional series of such actions that some observers thought would bring most public services to a halt. If my earlier portrait had been influenced (too much, they thought) by the American Malaise in which I was implicated, so must their later reaction to my portrait have been influenced (too much, I thought) by the Swedish Turmoil of 1970 and 1971. 224 pp. Englisch.
