Soft cover. Condition: New. 232 pp. Eino Kailas (1890-1958) academic career spanned from his early psychological work and the simultaneous interest in religious and pragmatist themes, through his mature logically empiristic philosophy of science, up to his late thought, with a desperate search for the philosophical foundations of a unified scientific worldview. Most of the essays appearing in this volume are based on an international symposium on Eino Kailas philosophy organized at the University of Helsinki in September 2010. The symposium offered reappraisals of Kailas philosophy from a number of different perspectives, including not only epistemology and philosophy of science but also Kailas criticism of metaphysics and religion as well as his view on ethics.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 274 pages ; 25 cm. This volume grew out of a Nordic research project Rearticulations of Reason: Recent Currents. The aim of the project was to explore the various uses of the concepts of reason and rationality in twentieth century and contemporary philosophy, and to develop new ways of understanding those concepts. This volume takes into account the main twentieth century traditions, analytic philosophy, phenomenology, and pragmatism, and contributes to fields where the concepts of reason and rationality play a central role, such as philosophy of mind, philosophical anthropology, philosophy of language, ethics and metaethics, political philosophy, and metaphilosophy.

Georg Henrik von Wright (1916 2003) is perhaps best known for his pioneering results in philosophical logic, his important influence in the development of analytic philosophy, and for his substantial contribution to the investigation, interpretation, and editing of Ludwig Wittgenstein s literary estate. In addition he made a significant contribution to a number of other fields of academic philosophy, built bridges across different philosophical traditions, and participated actively in public discussion on burning global issues and events. He believed in the power of rational social and cultural debate and challenged people to give up their baseless illusions, participate in discussions, and search together for constructive solutions. In this collection of essays a number of friends, students and colleagues of Georg Henrik von Wright share their personal memories of him as a great thinker and a beloved gentleman.
