Hardback. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 134 pages, plus fold-out map; 84 photos of the Southern lakes area, some in color; Temple provides both photographs and text; from the dj: "To encompass the region in one exciting study he (Temple) has naturally followed the lines laid down by the landscape itself. This consists of exploring and describing in turn the headwaters of each of the three main rivers--the Waitaki, the Clutha and Waiau--fed by the great lakes. This grouping has also allowed him to portray the distinctive character of man's inroads upon each headwaters area, with appropriate passages of a history involving high-country sheep farming, gold digging and mining, early exploration west to the fiords, deer shooting and hydro-power and tourist development."
