Item Description: London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1874, 1874. Octavo. Original bottle green pictorial cloth, title gilt to the spine with a trophy of Ethiopian arms, gilt roundel portraits of Napier and Wolseley set in foliage blocked in black, brown surface-paper endpapers. Slight rubbed, front hinge starting, consequently lightly shaken, short tear to the larger folding map, no loss, light toning, overall a very good copy. Portrait frontispiece and 16 other plates, illustrations to the text, two folding maps. Second edition, same year as the first. Stanley covered the Abyssinian expedition for the New York Herald and the sensational reception of his despatches from the fall of Magdala, which beat even the official reports back to London, was probably key in the decision to select him for the Livingstone mission. Item Description: May 24, 1862, 1862. Wood engraving, 775 x 1060 mm, on four sheets joined, dissected and mounted on linen, with marbled endpapers, lacking the slipcase, with later colouring for prominent buildings, parks, rivers, ponds and so on. Typed title label on the upper endpaper. London : Illustrated London News, Detailed plan of London, at a scale of four inches to one statute mile, covering a region from Highgate and Stamford Hill south to Putney Bridge, Stockwell, Peckham Rye and Blackheath, and west to east from Willesden and Hammersmith to the River Lea And Blackheath. The map was issued as a folded insert to accompany the 'Illustrated London News' issue of 14th May, 1862, but a good number of examples were issued separately, as here, dissected and mounted on linen for ease of use (and storage). The map was issued to publicize the International Exhibition of 1862 (1st May to 1st November 1862), a world fair sponsored by the Royal Academy of Arts. The exhibition venue can be seen on the Cromwell Road in South Kensington, the site now home to the Natural History Museum. As such it gives an accurate overview of the London of the day. Much of the outlying areas of the map are still fields, but the rapid expansion of London's population of the period would soon see these areas - Kentish Town, Willesden, Paddington, Earls Court, Putney, Fulham and Hammersmith, as examples - built up. The map also includes proposed railways: the South Eastern Railway extension from London Bridge Station to Charing Cross, the new railway from London Bridge Station to Cannon Street Stations, and the 'Metropolitan Underground Railway' from Paddington Station to Moorgate. A proposed bridge across the Thames, never built, is marked from the left of Temple Pier to Commercial Road in Southwark, between Waterloo and Blackfriars Bridges. Battersea Park is depicted laid-out as originally planned, not as completed. Hyde, Printed Maps of Victorian London, 82. Bookseller Inventory # 223147

Item Description: Illustrated London News. George C. Leighton., London, 1863. Quarter Leather. Book Condition: Fair. First Edition. 16 x 11.5. 708 + 668pp Note 3 issues were not bound in, and a further 4 have faults - so about 45 issues completely correct, see details below. One of the more sought after years of this publication because of it's coverage of The American Civil War, The block is completely detached from the cover but the block is still well bound together from the first title page to the end. Apart from some minor age staining, mainly to edges of pages, the interior is generally in nice clean condition with just occasional expected useage marks. About 3 or 4 of the Fashion engravings have been nicely coloured in (see example in pics attached). The occasional page has an odd small tear but nothing severe. Wear to extremeties of cover. No colour plates present (if any expected). Gilt titling to spine. Huge number of superb engravings. Ideal for a rebind - probably as 2 separate volumes - the current cover has childish scribbling in crayon on the inside boards.Faults: In vol 42 issue of Jan 31 not present, pages 283-286 not present (but text from 282 continues without anything missing on page 287), pages 309-324 of March 21st issue missing (possibly a Royal Wedding Supplement) although the single-sided double page spread is present but out of sequence, In Vol 43 issue of Aug 15th some pages out of sequence, first 2 sheets of Aug 22nd have a 4 x 1 inch piece torn off edge losing a few words, First 2 issues of Oct missing. Nothing appears to have been removed from this book, this is how it was originally bound. Large & heavy tome - Weighs about 7 kg, additional P&P will be applicable - substsantial for overseas, PLEASE contact me for a quote before purchasing. See my other listings for more volumes of this work. Bookseller Inventory # iln1863a

Item Description: The London Illustrated News, London, England, 1940. Soft cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. This set comprises all 52 copies of this important magazine's run for the crucial year of 1940. The condition of these magazines is extraordinary . There were all subscribed for by a certain Dr Smith and appear to have been kept very carefully as a historical record ever since. There is no evidence of mould or sunlight. A couple of the covers have separated from the staples used by the publisher and a very few of the staples are rusty and show very small stains around them. Apart from these very minor points, they must be one of the best preserved sets in the UK. As with all our sales of books within the UK, we only ever charge a flat standard delivery cost of £3.35.
