Book Description: Borba de Moraes, p. 580; Harrisse 58; Sabin 50058; cf. PMM 42; Romano, Historical atlas of the United Arab Emirates (New York, 2004), 26. First Latin edition of the most important and "earliest printed collection of voyages and discoveries" (PMM). Also the only edition of this collection of travel reports to include the map showing Africa, Arabia and part of Europe, illustrating for the first time the new discoveries in the eastern hemisphere. This map, not included in the original 1507 Italian edition or any subsequent edition, is the earliest to show Africa completely surrounded by seas and, as one of the first non-Ptolemaic maps to include Arabia, definitely the earliest "modern" printed map to show Mecca. Published in 1508, it raises a controversy still with us more than 500 years later: it labels the Red Sea and the Gulf as a single body of water and calls it the Gulf, but in the first state of the block it was called the "Persian Gulf" ("Sinus Persicus"). For reasons unknown, the editor revised the block with a patch to rename it the "Arabian Gulf" ("Sinus Arabicus"). The map therefore exists in two different states in copies of this edition. Ours is the rarer second one, with "Sinus Arabicus". From the famous collection of Dr. Samuel X. Radbill. Foot of map creased as folded for binding, head of first 3 leaves with a stain and last 5 leaves with corner stains, binding slightly rubbed. Overall a very bright and clean copy. Book Description: [Guatemala, and various locations in Central America. 1800-1910]., 1910. More than 2000 printed items. With much additional later printed material. Various sizes, with many folios, broadsides, and octavo pamphlets. A few documents soiled or lightly dampstained, with scattered wear and chipping. Some age toning and foxing, scattered minor worming. Many items housed in individual plastic sleeves or paper folders. Overall, very good. A remarkable collection of Central American material, with over 2000 imprints from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the items were printed in various locales in Guatemala, with a scattering of imprints from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The imprints included span the breadth of the 19th century and on into the 20th. Approximately seventy-five percent of these date from the 1820s to the 1880s. This rich collection holds a tremendous amount of research potential in a number of areas. It includes a significant number of ephemeral broadsides and other political material, documenting the turbulent political scene in Guatemala from independence to the early 20th century. Guatemala and the rest of Central America - El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica - declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. This federation lasted until 1840, when civil war tore the region into separate states. From there, a series of presidencies and lengthy dictatorships dominated the political landscape, all documented in the material of the present collection. One important broadside from 1854 proclaims President Rafael Carrera (1814-65) to be the supreme and perpetual leader of Guatemala for life, a position he held from 1851 until his death in 1865. There are extensive runs of select items, such as the MENSAJE DE PRESIDENTE and the rebuttal CONTESTACIONS DE L'ASSEMBLE, which run from the 1850s through the early 1900s (about 100 items). There is also a series of DISCURSOS commemorating Central American independence dating to roughly the same time frame (about forty items). Several runs of official periodicals are also included here, among them the BOLETIN OFICIAL (about sixty issues from the 1830s); and the BOLETIN DE NOTICIAS (seventeen issues from the 1870s), which documents the last days of the government of Vicente Cerna Sandoval. In the later material there is a significant number of political broadsides and proclamas from the presidency of dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, many bearing a woodcut portrait of the president. Cabrera (1857-1924) was in office from 1898 to 1920, suppressing several revolts against his rule. Additionally, there are periodicals, government publications, and numerous pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects. The 1870s saw a flurry of modernization in Guatemala, and this collection mirrors that activity, with more imprints (approximately 600) from that decade than any other. A handful of items from the mid- to late-19th century concern the lottery, the circus, bullfights, and the theatre in Guatemala. There is also a discrete cache of medical- related material, covering cholera outbreaks, whooping cough, and similar topics. Another segment covers the development of the railroad and the telegraph in Guatemala and Central America. There are also pamphlets on subjects such as religion, the military, economics, laws, and more. An impressive and extensive collection, documenting hundreds of years of Guatemalan history. This collection was built over many years by a scholar of the region, and clearly could not be equaled today. Bookseller Inventory # WRCAM 46256

An extraordinary art forgery document, a signed drawing, sold as by Rufino Tamayo, the renowned 20th century Mexican painter & printmaker that was later identified by Rufino Tamayo as a forgery. He documented the event for Jacob D. Weintraub, the owner & prominent NY art dealer by dramatically writing FAKE through the head and autographing his declaration below. The on-the-spot response transformed a mediocre forgery into a conceptual artwork on identity fraud and the corruption of an art market that ceaselessly searches for in demand product. The banner style declaration (in capitals) spans 65 x 182 mm (2.6 x 7.2 inches) and is done in the manner of voiding a financial instrument, with an artist's confidence in combining line

Tamayo Rufino. Book by Juan Garcia Ponce. ******* and space, piercing a wrist and cutting into an eye, the central k executed as an insult-v along the nose, joined to an x. The nonpareil Rufino Tamayo autograph nearly spans the width of the drawing; its long T-bar highlights FAKE. Three pieces of preserved documentation on the rear backing, the art gallery seller label, a museum sticker used to augment provenance, and Weintraub's jottings on the purchase, establish some of the historical background. Additional forensic documentation for the forgery declaration is provided by a matching period, late 60s' signature by Tamayo on the deluxe justification leaf in a rare limited edition book on his paintings owned by Jacob Weintraub. *******

Book Description: Alden & Landis 655/30; ESTC R18836; Howgego I, C27; Lach, Asia in the making of Europe II.2, pp.149-60; Penrose, Travel and discovery in the Renaissance, pp.72- 73, 289-90; Pforzheimer 362; Streeter 41; Wing C397; Wither to Prior 349. First English-language edition of the great epic poem of Portuguese exploration, a monument of Portuguese literature that gave a Homeric aura to Renaissance voyages of discovery and colonial conquests. In mythology Lusus, a son or companion of Bacchus, is said to have founded Lusitania, approximately corresponding to the modern kingdom of Portugal, so the Portuguese heroes of the epic are called Luciads. "The 'Lusiads', as a synthesis of national sentiment and literary development, stands unchallenged as the epic of the Portuguese nation, and it celebrates more than anything else the voyage of Da Gama and the intrepid bravery of the Portuguese on land and sea" (Lach). Camões's work was first published in Portuguese at Lisbon in 1572 under the title Os Luciadas. In the early 1530s the great Portuguese historian, João de Barros, most famous for his Decadas de Asia, had called for an epic poem of Portuguese exploration and discovery. Luis de Camões (1524-1580) answered that call four decades later.Camões's inspiration for his epic poem, composed in ten cantos, was Virgil's Aeneid. It gives a fine description not only of Portuguese exploits in the East, but also of the flora and fauna of Asia and India, the ethnographic details of the peoples there, and the geography of the region, informed by Camões's own experiences as well as his familiarity with Ptolemy and Barros. The Lusiads was immensely popular upon its publication, appearing in numerous Portuguese and Spanish editions before the end of the century, and serving as a source for Linschoten in the preparation of his 1595 Itinerario. Slightly browned and with some mostly marginal tears repaired, otherwise in good condition. The binding has a minor surface crack at the head of the joint of the front board and an occasional tiny scuff mark at the extremities but is otherwise in fine condition. An epic poem forming a classic of Portuguese literature and of the literature of overseas expansion and the exploration of Asia, by an author with years of experience in Portuguese Asia. Book Description: Huth, p. 103; Menessier de La Lance II, p. 414; Nissen, ZBI 3380. First edition of a rare anatomical plate book with fine lithographed plates illustrating the proportions, bones and muscles of all parts of the horse. The muscles in the anatomical plates are subtly coloured and shaded in pink. The book was written by the French painter Jean Claude Reverchon (1796-1851), who taught art at the veterinary college in Lyon from 1839 to 1836.Mennessier de la Lance notes that some copies have the plates in black and white, while some have them coloured. Our copy matches the collation given by Mennessier de la Lance and Nissen, with (as usual) no descriptive text for plate 9 (showing only the horse's skeleton, from front and back) and without plate 18, printed by Lefevre without accompanying descriptive text, noted in a few copies by KVK/WorldCat.The edition therefore includes 19 letterpress leaves, all printed on one side only: title-page, avant-propos, explanatory text for the frontispiece and explanatory text for plates 1-8 and 10-17. The book has been treated for mildew, leaving some spotting, marginal soiling and one plate wrinkled. Pictorial horse book in good condition with stunning anatomical plates. Book Description: ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF C, 1951. Book Condition: Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is a significant, historical manuscript document archive of 120 pages handwritten by a Chinese teacher named Wang JiYao who was a teacher at the Food Oil factory, City of ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province in the era of the anti-rights struggle of the 1950's. Historians and researchers and collectors of the era will note the schizophrenic nature of the times so clearly displayed by the totality of these papers. The man in this archive was a teacher born in early 1930s becoming a teacher in 1951. As the Chinese government launched a call for intellectuals to give advice and even criticize the leader of the government in early 1957 this teacher gave frank and reasonable advice and criticism of the government. Later that year, the situation reversed. He and thousands of other intellectuals in China who criticized their leaders and government were judged guilty of anti-socialist thought and right wing deviation. He was classified as a Rightist for what he said in his daily life. Some examples: "The brutality of the communist party is unsurpassed by the Qin Emperor"; "It should be fine to criticize Chairman Mao, because he is an educated man"; "If the leader refuses the criticism, then he should not be a leader". The writer was called to confess his so called crimes. The confession was written by Wang JiYao from 1951 to 1957, the material written before 1957 was related to his family, because he was born to a landowner's family, which was classified as the class enemy number one. Other reports were written by many coworkers to show Wang JiYao had the rightist ideas by revealing what he said in the past. No conviction material was attached. The 120 pages consist of more than 10 files, including: his registration forms in early 1950s; three impeachment or disclosure files [including testimony of co-workers; and five files of his confessions of guilt (70 pages!) in 1957. This archive is a particularly interesting encapsulation within one man's experience of a sadly all too typical occasion in mid 20th Century China. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source provides: The Anti-Rightist Movement of the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and early 1960s consisted of a series of campaigns to purge alleged "rightists" within the Communist Party of China (CPC) and abroad. The definition of "rightists" was not always consistent, sometimes including critics to the left of the government, but officially referred to those intellectuals who appeared to favour capitalism and class divisions and against collectivization. The campaigns were instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong and saw the political persecution of an estimated 550,000. The Anti-Rightist Movement was a reaction against the Hundred Flowers Campaign, which had promoted pluralism of expression and criticism of the government. Going perhaps as far back as the Long March there had been resentment against "rightists" inside the CPC, for example Zhang Bojun. The first wave of attacks began immediately following the end of the Hundred Flowers movement in July 1957. By the end of the year, 300,000 people had been labeled as rightists, including the writer Ding Ling. Future premier Zhu Rongji, then working in the State Planning Commission, was purged in 1958. Most of the accused were intellectuals. The penalties included informal criticism, "re-education through labour" and in some cases death. One main target was the independent legal system. Legal professionals were transferred to other jobs; judicial power was exercised instead by political cadres and the police. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Chinese Language. Book Description: c, 1910. The exterior dimensions are 760 x 62o mms., while the oval portrait is 560 x 460 mms. The original painting was sold at Christie's South Kensington in November, 2008, sold for £103,250. One interesting feature of the painting is that Mrs. Thrale was described as having grey eyes; and they are definitely grey in the Christie's portrait. In this painting - copy or otherwise - her eyes are hazel. It was engraved for the European Magazine in 1786. Bookseller Inventory # 7080

Book Description: Tiele, Bibl. 22; cf. Cox I, p. 299 (English ed.); on the author: ODNB online ed. First Dutch edition (second issue) of Ives' travel account of his voyage from England to India and his journey from Persia to England, first published in English in 1773. From 1753 to 1757 the naval surgeon and traveller Edward Ives (1719-1786) was surgeon of the Kent, the flagship of Vice-Admiral Charles Watson, commander-in-chief in the East Indies. The squadron sailed via the Cape of Good Hope and Madagascar to India, where they visited the chief English settlements and major cities, Ives attending the company hospitals and staff in each place. When Admiral Watson died in August 1757, Ives' own health was also somewhat impaired and he resigned his appointment, travelling home overland from Basrah, through Baghdad, Mosul and Aleppo, via Cyprus to Livorno and Venice, and finally through Germany and the Netherlands, arriving in England in March 1759 (ODNB). The plates include depictions of an altar, a Hooka (a Persian tobacco-pipe, in the large folding plate), the tower of Babel, views of the forts St. David and Geriah, and an amulet with Arabic inscriptions, together with Dutch translations. ''Ive's presence at many of the transactions which he describes and his personal intimacy with Watson give this historical narrative an unusual importance, and his account of the manners and customs of the countries he visited, are those of an enlightened and acute observer. The appendix contains an account of the diseases prevalent in Admiral Watson's squadron, a description of most of the trees, shrubs, and plants of India, with their medical virtues'' (Cox). This Dutch edition is a reissue of the edition published some 4 years earlier (Rotterdam and Utrecht, 1775-1776). The original English edition, A voyage from England to India , was published in London in 1773. A German edition appeared in 1775-1776.Small marginal tear in 1 map and the folding plate, vol. 2 with loss of some paper in lower blank leaf of C4 and the last 3 quires browned. A wide-margined copy of Ives' narrative in good condition. Bookseller Inventory # FAACJSR1MSG6

Book Description: London: The Curwen Press, 1922., 1922. Small 8vo. Original beige linen cloth with label to upper board in black and white. Four colour illustrations by Albert Rutherston depicting the seasons. Binding shaken, cloth worn at corners and spine caps and significantly age-darkened, label to upper board worn and cracked, small ink stain to cloth on lower board. Initial's 'J.D.' in red ink to front free endpaper. Condition is as you'd expect a book to look when it's been carried around in someone's pocket for a few years while they get all their friends to sign it: weathered, travelled, and well-thumbed. Housed in contemporary custom-made blue leather clamshell case with blue silk ties and with John Drinkwater's initials embossed in gold to the spine. A unique item.Ê John Drinkwater (1882-1937) was born in Leytonstone, London. He left school at fifteen, and published his first volume of poetry at the age of 21. In the period immediately before the First World War, he was one of the group of poets associated with the Gloucestershire village of Dymock, along with Rupert Brooke, Robert Frost and others. In 1918, he scored his first major success with his play, Abraham Lincoln, which caught the mood of the day and even found success in America. He followed it up with other plays in a similar vein, including Mary Stuart and Oliver Cromwell. He progressed into literary criticism, and later became manager of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. In 1911 he married Kathleen Walpole. He was subsequently married to violinist Daisy Kennedy, ex-wife of Benno Moiseiwitsch, the famous concert pianist. Penelope, his only child, was born in 1929. This little book contains over 200 signatures by almost every poetic, literary, dramatic and musical luminary of the 20s and 30s that you can think of. Clearly a great deal of them were Drinkwater's close friends, and each have signed their names on the date of their birthday, making it far more than just an autograph book - it is a fond and important record of a lifetime's friendships between the artistic great and good.Ê Signatures, to name but a few, include: Albert Rutherston, Padraic Colum, Noel Coward, Rebecca West, James Joyce, Peggy Ashcroft, Harriet Monroe, Gladys Cooper, J. Book Description: Comas & Miralles, "La impremta a Perpinyà: Samsó Arbús", in: Arxiu de textos catalans antics 29 (2010), pp. 355 & 367 (1 copy); KVK & WorldCat (same copy); Palau 145465; REBIUN (same copy). First and only edition of a very rare pamphlet in Catalan Spanish about the freeing in 1590 of 400 Christians captured by the Ottoman Empire, published in Perpignan seventy years before Spain ceded it to France. The pamphlet, addressed to Jayme Orellos, the local lieutenant of King Phillip III's procurator, gives a detailed account of the religious and military strife between Spanish, Portuguese and Italian Christians and the Muslims of the Ottoman Empire from 11 June 1590 to the last months of the year, ending with a note of 4 December 1590. It names the military leaders on both sides and refers to Constantinople and Tripoli. Although Llot de Ribera frequently evokes the Virgin Mary as "Señora del Rosario", the full-page woodcut shows a female saint with sword, wheel and what may be a book, suggesting Saint Catherine of Alexandria, though the wheel is not broken. Miquel Llot de Ribera (Clarà 1555-Lleida/Lerida 1607?), Catalan Professor of Theology at the University of Perpignan, was Arbús's most important author. In very good condition. Book Description: Van der Heijden & Blonk, De kaart van de Republiek 127, I A-B; Koeman, Sep 1; STCN (5 complete copies but no indication of their issues). First and only edition (first issue?) of a rare pocket atlas of the Dutch Republic (the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands), with numerous itineraries for travel to and within the Netherlands. The Amsterdam bookseller Jan Christiaan Sepp compiled it and dedicated it to Jan (Jean) Deutz van Assendelft (1693-1741), former lay judge of the city of Amsterdam. The key map, titled De VII Vereenigde Nederlandsche Provinciën and sometimes bound in as a frontispiece, shows how the other 73 untitled detail maps fit together. They show the entire United Provinces and a few areas outside its borders at a scale of about 1:250,000. Although all complete copies appear to contain the same 73 detail maps and the key map, the present title-page and preface note 75 maps, apparently an error that was corrected to 74. With some soiling and the title-page creased, but still in good condition. Binding with joint of the front board broken and paper sides foxed. Pocket-atlas of the Dutch Republic, designed for practical use by travellers. Bookseller Inventory # FCCEXFU6QRO5

Book Description: Barbier III, col.400 (''publiés par A.-G. Meusnier de Querlon, 1764, in -8, 48 pp.''); KVK (3 copies); Polak 13070; cf: Andrus and Start (publishers), Remarkable shipwrecks . (Hartford, 1813), pp. 94-108; Duncan, The Mariner's Chronicle III, pp. 180-198; not in Huntress; on the author: Dictionnaire des journalistes (1600-1789) online ed. Very rare narrative of the loss of the English East Indiaman Fattysalam off the coast of Coromandel on 28 August 1761. It was written by the French counsellor, man of letters and employee at the Royal library of King Louis XV, Anne-Gabriel Meusnier de Querlon (1702-1780), Comte de Kearny, and the book refers to him simply as De Kearny. The account ''is given in a letter from M. de Kearny, a captain in Lally's regiment, who was taken prisoner by the English, to the Count D'Estaing, lieutenant-general, commanding the French troops in the East Indies, during the war of 1756 . The Fattysalam had been built at Bombay, and had never been employed in the Indian seas. She was intended to carry great part of the stores taken by the English, and near 500 troops, which it had been thought fit to send to Bengal, because after the regiment of Pondicherry, they were not wanted on that coast.'' (Duncan).Kearny was one out of 12 who had escaped from the ship, which had been lost, together with most of the crew. By way of the dominion of the Rajah of Arsapour, Cuttack, Barrasole and Calcutta, the company arrived at Goupil (Gupil) where they spotted several of the East India Company's ships. ''On the 2d of February I [Kearny] left Calcutta and returned to Goupil, on the Ganges, where I embarked in the Holdernesse, commanded by Captain Brooke. I was received with great kindness by the captain, who had on board thirteen or fourteen other French officers, prisoners like myself'' (Duncan). After a month the ship arrived at London, from where he was permitted to return to France. The book gives no date, place of publication or name of the publisher, but Barbier indicates that is was published by De Kearny in 1764 (the latest date mentioned in the account is 1762). The (laid) paper is watermarked with a cardinall's arms with "Fin Dannonay|M[fleur-de-lis]Iohanot 1742", that is Mathieu Johannot in Annonay. The 1742 date was used in French paper for decades and Mathieu Johannot was active in Annonay to 1785. The types and ornaments appear in Pierre Simon Fournier's 1764 type specimen.Only slightly trimmed, preserving some deckles. In very good condition, with only a small marginal stain at the foot of pp. 35-36. The front wrapper with 2 tears along a fold. Bookseller Inventory # A3KBBFCAXE78
