Item Description: [Guatemala, and various locations in Central America. 1800-1910]., 1910. More than 2000 printed items. With much additional later printed material. Various sizes, with many folios, broadsides, and octavo pamphlets. A few documents soiled or lightly dampstained, with scattered wear and chipping. Some age toning and foxing, scattered minor worming. Many items housed in individual plastic sleeves or paper folders. Overall, very good. A remarkable collection of Central American material, with over 2000 imprints from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the items were printed in various locales in Guatemala, with a scattering of imprints from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The imprints included span the breadth of the 19th century and on into the 20th. Approximately seventy-five percent of these date from the 1820s to the 1880s. This rich collection holds a tremendous amount of research potential in a number of areas. It includes a significant number of ephemeral broadsides and other political material, documenting the turbulent political scene in Guatemala from independence to the early 20th century. Guatemala and the rest of Central America - El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica - declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. This federation lasted until 1840, when civil war tore the region into separate states. From there, a series of presidencies and lengthy dictatorships dominated the political landscape, all documented in the material of the present collection. One important broadside from 1854 proclaims President Rafael Carrera (1814-65) to be the supreme and perpetual leader of Guatemala for life, a position he held from 1851 until his death in 1865. There are extensive runs of select items, such as the MENSAJE DE PRESIDENTE and the rebuttal CONTESTACIONS DE L'ASSEMBLE, which run from the 1850s through the early 1900s (about 100 items). There is also a series of DISCURSOS commemorating Central American independence dating to roughly the same time frame (about forty items). Several runs of official periodicals are also included here, among them the BOLETIN OFICIAL (about sixty issues from the 1830s); and the BOLETIN DE NOTICIAS (seventeen issues from the 1870s), which documents the last days of the government of Vicente Cerna Sandoval. In the later material there is a significant number of political broadsides and proclamas from the presidency of dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, many bearing a woodcut portrait of the president. Cabrera (1857-1924) was in office from 1898 to 1920, suppressing several revolts against his rule. Additionally, there are periodicals, government publications, and numerous pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects. The 1870s saw a flurry of modernization in Guatemala, and this collection mirrors that activity, with more imprints (approximately 600) from that decade than any other. A handful of items from the mid- to late-19th century concern the lottery, the circus, bullfights, and the theatre in Guatemala. There is also a discrete cache of medical- related material, covering cholera outbreaks, whooping cough, and similar topics. Another segment covers the development of the railroad and the telegraph in Guatemala and Central America. There are also pamphlets on subjects such as religion, the military, economics, laws, and more. An impressive and extensive collection, documenting hundreds of years of Guatemalan history. This collection was built over many years by a scholar of the region, and clearly could not be equaled today. Bookseller Inventory # WRCAM 46256

Item Description: Adams H-394; Ahmanson-Murphy 62 & 62a; Dibdin II, p. 19; PMM 41. Splendid copy of the famous first edition of the original Greek text of the works of Herodotus (ca. 484 BC- ca. 425 BC), "the father of history," published and edited by Aldus Manutius at Venice on the basis of many manuscripts. By promoting Herodotus as a key to ancient history and society and providing a reliable text, it set the stage for his popularity in the 16th century. It covers the growth of the Persian Empire, the history of Egypt, Persian incursions into Greece, the defeat of the Persians in 490 BC, the Persian king Xerxes's attempt to avenge the Persian defeat and their defeat once again in 479 BC. But perhaps of greatest interest are the strange and fantastic tales and anecdotes, including the circumnavigation of Africa."Herodotus is the earliest historian; his predecessors were by contrast chroniclers. He was the first to collect his materials systematically, to test their accuracy as far as he could, and to arrange his story so as to appeal to, as well as inform, his readers. . Certainly for the Persian war his authority forms the basis of all modern histories; and, more than that, it is the stuff of legends. Herodotus is far more than a valuable source: always readable, his work has been quoted and translated ever since" (PMM).With extensive records of provenance. In fine condition and with generous margins, with only some light stains on the first page and last page, and a couple tiny marginal worm holes in the last 4 leaves (in the margins except for 1 in the last leaf). Magnificent copy of a seminal first edition from a famous library. Bookseller Inventory # 98OH076596KH

Item Description: Palau 328839; USTC 343307. First edition, in Latin, of a report on the Portuguese in India and especially on their defeat of the Muslim Gujarat Sultanate at the second siege of Diu in 1546, written by the Portuguese humanist Diogo de Teive (ca. 1514-ca. 1570). The book opens with a 4-page dedication to King João III, dated 1 March 1548, and two verses (each occupying a full page), followed by the main text, dated August 1547.The Portuguese reached India in 1498 (and regarded it as their property under the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas concluded with Spain) but in the early years they met stiff resistance from the Gujarats, supported at various times by the Mamluks and the Ottoman Empire. Although they never penetrated far inland, the Portuguese gradually came to dominate the coastal areas, in particular expanding their territory and power in northwest India from 1509 to 1546. In 1546 the Gujarats under Khoja (or Khwaja) Sofar tried to retake Diu, lost in 1509, but after a seven-month siege they were routed by the Portuguese fleet under João de Castro. This established the European colonial power and the European spice trade in India (including what is now Pakistan), where Portugal was to be followed by the Dutch and especially England before most of India finally gained its independence in 1947. Small parts, including Diu, remained in Portuguese hands until 1961.Trimmed, shaving an accent on the title-page and the running head on a few pages, but otherwise in good condition, with some minor defects. The binding has several worm holes and the spine is damaged and partly restored. A contemporary account of the Portuguese defeat of the Muslim forces in Gujarat in 1546. Item Description: Nissen, BBI 695; Nissen, ZBI 1488; Palau 100869 ("Es muy dificil reunir la obra complete"); Sabin 26779; Zimmer, p. 237. First edition of this monumental account of the natural and civil history of Chile, with numerous beautiful illustrations mostly in very fine colouring. This set has the complete text, which is unusual since the work was issued over a period of 27 years. In 1830, the French botanist Claude Gay was asked by the government of Chile to make a detailed description of the history, geography, geology and natural history of their country. Gay travelled through Chile during eleven years to do all the scientific research he needed for his work. The result was the present work, the first complete description of Chilean history and a model in modern historiography, with its meticulous examination of sources and documents. Good set. Item Description: 1874. Oblong folio. Oblong folio. An album of exceedingly rare lithographic views of scenes in the West Indies and North America. Though unattributed, these lithographs are after original drawings by Vice Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe of the British Royal Navy. The drawings were made by him while he was Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indies Station from 1870 to 1874, and we believe the lithographs to have been made about the same time. Vice Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe (1814-1906) was the son of a distinguished general and the grandson of naval commander Robert Fanshawe, who served with Admiral John Byron. Fanshawe attended the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth and entered the navy in December, 1828. He served in the Mediterranean, India, and in the home and Lisbon stations. In 1841 he was promoted to commander, and was sent to the East Indies, where he earned acclaim for reducing a pirate stronghold at Borneo. Fanshawe then served in the Pacific, in the Baltic during the Crimean War, and again in the Mediterranean. In 1863 he as promoted to Rear Admiral, and two years later was made a Lord of the Admiralty. In 1870 Fanshawe was promoted to Vice Admiral and was appointed Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indies Station, a position he held until 1874. Following that he was president of the Royal Naval College, and then Commander in Chief at Portsmouth, until his retirement in 1879. Vice Admiral Fanshawe was an accomplished artist, and painted and sketched throughout his long career in the navy. The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich holds several paintings by Fanshawe, as well as an album of lithographic views after his sketches in the West Indies, North America, and Borneo (presented to the Museum in 1951). When Fanshawe was appointed Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indies Station in September, 1870, he sailed with his family for Halifax, Nova Scotia. Joining him was his son, (a future Admiral of the Fleet) Arthur Fanshawe, as his flag lieutenant. The Fanshawes mainly lived at Admiralty House, Halifax in the summer, and at Clarence Hill, Bermuda, in the winter. During the winters Fanshawe took regular cruises around the West Indies to show the flag, visit British stations, and conduct fleet exercises. Among the places visited were Demerara, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Martinique, Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica (a yearly occurrence), and Cuba. He also visited the United States and Canada, taking his flagship, the "Royal Alfred," to Annapolis and meeting with President Grant in Washington, as well as visiting Quebec, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls. Nearly all the lithographs in the present album match the lithographs as captioned and described in the Fanshawe album of views in the West Indies, North America, and Borneo at the National Maritime Museum. In their cataloging of that album of lithographs, the NMM states: "It can only be assumed [Fanshawe] made the drawings that are the basis of the West Indian and American lithographs: who turned them into prints and when is unknown. It is not impossible he did so himself later but perhaps unlikely: his son Evelyn might be another possibility, since he was also an amateur photographer." We surmise that the lithographs were created from Fanshawe's drawings while he was Commander in Chief in North America, and that they were likely made in either Halifax (where he summered) or Bermuda (where he wintered). In all there are forty total views in the present album, including of Bermuda, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Antigua, Trinidad, Tobago, and elsewhere in the West Indies. A few of the views are of North America, and include views of Niagara Falls and the St. Lawrence River. The views included in the album are as follows: 1) "From Signal Hill, - Bermuda." 2) Untitled, showing a coastal fortress with sailboats and a canoe circling it. 3) "St. Salvador." (captoned in pencil) 4) "Court House. Berbice." 5) "Bocca Grande Trinidad." 6) "Rockly Bay. Tobago." 7) "Forte Ki. Bookseller Inventory # 100840

Ad 1: second edition of an important standard work, containing portraits and biographies of Dutch painters of the 17th century. It was intended as a continuation of Van Mander's book on Dutch painters, first published in 1604. The book starts with Desiderius Erasmus, omitted by Van Mander, and ends with painters born between 1635 and 1659, the death of the author preventing a further continuation.Ad 2: first and only early edition of Van Gool's continuation of Houbraken's, giving short biographies and descriptions of the works of Dutch painters from 1630 to 1725. It also includes a history of the drawing academy in the Hague. The whole set is interleaved and contains numerous notes by the Belgian art-lover, bibliophile and Rubens connoisseur François-Jean-Joseph Mols (1722-1790), adding many remarks, new stories, anecdotes and corrections. All volumes with his engraved bookplate. Mols owned a magnificent library and a fine art collection. Both works in very good condition, lacking the frontispiece of the second. Item Description: Choulant, pp. 296-297; ESTC T137584; Gaskell 56; Heirs of Hippocrates 942; Roberts & Tomlinson, pp. 460-465. Magnificent first edition of a bilingual (Latin and English) anatomical atlas on obstetrics and gynaecology, illustrated with 34 mostly life-sized and accurately detailed anatomical plates of pregnant women and their unborn children. William Hunter (1718-1783), royal physician and professor of anatomy at the Society of Naval Surgeons, wrote the preface and the notes to the plates, had the illustrations drawn under his supervision and worked closely with the engravers, who produced the plates at his expense. The work began when a young woman died suddenly at full term in 1751 and Hunter was able to procure her body before any deterioration. In the preface Hunter gives remarkable details about his techniques, such as "the injection of the blood-vessels" to preserve the body for the artists, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of anatomical illustration, which he mixes here. "One of the great publications of world medical literature as well as a classic of book production" (Heirs of Hippocrates) and "one of the great artistic achievements in medicine" (Haskell Norman). With the ca. 1800 ink stamp of "The Liverpool Library". Without the dedication leaf, fore-edge of plate VIII slightly shaved, a small restoration removing its engraver's name, a few other small marginal restorations, a crease in 1 plate and a few text leaves, and a faint marginal water stain in the last few leaves, but still generally in good condition. The marbled-paper sides are slightly rubbed but the binding is otherwise very good. A spectacular showpiece for any collection in the field of anatomical illustration, women's studies, obstetrics, gynaecology or book production. Bookseller Inventory # 98UDDUCFFZDL

Item Description: ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF C, 1951. Book Condition: Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is a significant, historical manuscript document archive of 120 pages handwritten by a Chinese teacher named Wang JiYao who was a teacher at the Food Oil factory, City of ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province in the era of the anti-rights struggle of the 1950's. Historians and researchers and collectors of the era will note the schizophrenic nature of the times so clearly displayed by the totality of these papers. The man in this archive was a teacher born in early 1930s becoming a teacher in 1951. As the Chinese government launched a call for intellectuals to give advice and even criticize the leader of the government in early 1957 this teacher gave frank and reasonable advice and criticism of the government. Later that year, the situation reversed. He and thousands of other intellectuals in China who criticized their leaders and government were judged guilty of anti-socialist thought and right wing deviation. He was classified as a Rightist for what he said in his daily life. Some examples: "The brutality of the communist party is unsurpassed by the Qin Emperor"; "It should be fine to criticize Chairman Mao, because he is an educated man"; "If the leader refuses the criticism, then he should not be a leader". The writer was called to confess his so called crimes. The confession was written by Wang JiYao from 1951 to 1957, the material written before 1957 was related to his family, because he was born to a landowner's family, which was classified as the class enemy number one. Other reports were written by many coworkers to show Wang JiYao had the rightist ideas by revealing what he said in the past. No conviction material was attached. The 120 pages consist of more than 10 files, including: his registration forms in early 1950s; three impeachment or disclosure files [including testimony of co-workers; and five files of his confessions of guilt (70 pages!) in 1957. This archive is a particularly interesting encapsulation within one man's experience of a sadly all too typical occasion in mid 20th Century China. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source provides: The Anti-Rightist Movement of the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and early 1960s consisted of a series of campaigns to purge alleged "rightists" within the Communist Party of China (CPC) and abroad. The definition of "rightists" was not always consistent, sometimes including critics to the left of the government, but officially referred to those intellectuals who appeared to favour capitalism and class divisions and against collectivization. The campaigns were instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong and saw the political persecution of an estimated 550,000. The Anti-Rightist Movement was a reaction against the Hundred Flowers Campaign, which had promoted pluralism of expression and criticism of the government. Going perhaps as far back as the Long March there had been resentment against "rightists" inside the CPC, for example Zhang Bojun. The first wave of attacks began immediately following the end of the Hundred Flowers movement in July 1957. By the end of the year, 300,000 people had been labeled as rightists, including the writer Ding Ling. Future premier Zhu Rongji, then working in the State Planning Commission, was purged in 1958. Most of the accused were intellectuals. The penalties included informal criticism, "re-education through labour" and in some cases death. One main target was the independent legal system. Legal professionals were transferred to other jobs; judicial power was exercised instead by political cadres and the police. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Chinese Language. He discusses and extensively illustrates the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Composite (here called Roman) and Corinthian orders of column, along with doorways, arches, facades, etc., using them. Other illustrations show fireplaces, a church interior and exterior, geometrical diagrams, ornaments, etc.Ad 2: Rare Dutch edition of one of the most popular books on the art of perspective, by the engraver, publisher and expert on fortifications Henricus Hondius the elder (1573-1650). "The book provides a series of neatly conceived demonstrations of perspective in its abstract and applied forms and gives an original if brief analysis of the upwards convergence of tall verticals to a 'contre-poinct' when viewed with a plane tilted slightly toward the spectator" (Kemp, p. 112). The Bosboom lacks 1 text leaf, but both works are otherwise in good condition, with some mostly marginal stains and some marginal restorations. The binding has been rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. Two 17th-century classics on architecture and perspective. Bookseller Inventory # AB5F8JQ6DWIV

Item Description: Beautiful and elegant writing book by Johannes Winand, each leaf with a calligraphic exercise written in German (14), Dutch (4), Latin (3), French (1) or Italian (1). The leaves of the album have been numbered in pencil. Each leaf begins with a large decorated initial letter, with the 23 leaves covering the alphabet from A to Z, with a single letter for I/J and for U/V. It includes W but lacks R, which should have come between leaves 16/Q and 17/S. The main texts of most leaves are written in various gothic hands but five are in Latin hands. The initials are also mostly gothic, with 8 roman and 1 script. Some exercises take the form of letters addressed to notables, family, etc., others begin with an epithet followed by an often religious text. 11 leaves are signed J. or Jaen or Jo(h)annes Winandi, and 4 are dated 1689. The German form of his name was probably Johann Winand. He was most likely a brilliant pupil rather than a master, since we have found no reference to a writing master of that name or another writing book by him. Several people of that name were born in the Rhineland area in the years around 1670.The calligraphic texts are written in the various hands considered appropriate for the various languages: German and Dutch in gothic hands; Latin, French and Italian in Latin hands, all including both cursive and more formal hands. The calligraphy is enriched with large initials, several of which are highlighted with gold and/or red or given penwork flourishes. The texts are illustrated with pen drawings of a stork, a spider in its web, a cat with a mouse, a dragon, a squirrel, a dog, a butterfly, etc. Some relate to the texts; others are merely decorative. With a round library stamp in open areas on the first and last leaf erased, but from a Jesuit library, with the IHS and cross still visible on the last leaf. One leaf (with initial R) is probably lacking and the leaves have been cut down, generally leaving about a half centimeter margin, but occasionally just touching part of the text or illustration, and mounted on the leaves of the mid-19th-century album. The black ink has sometimes eaten through the paper, mostly in large areas of black as in a few of the initials, and there is a tear repaired across 1 leaf, but the leaves are otherwise in good condition. The gold has often not bonded well, so that some has come off, exposing the green ground underneath. A beautiful manuscript writing book, with its 23 leaves giving a complete alphabet of decorated initials except for the letter R. Bookseller Inventory # 21282

Unique Collection of 36 Original Pen &: Krishizki, George ("Georges")

Item Description: NP, New York, 1989. Boards. Book Condition: vg. Original artwork. Unique collection of 36 original pen and ink drawings of classical artists by "Georges" (born George Krishizki) drawn at Carnegie Hall, New York City, between 1971 and 1989. Each drawing (most measuring 12 x 9" or 9 x 12") is signed and captioned by the artist, and is also signed (and sometimes inscribed*) by the subject. The full spectrum of classical music is represented, including instrumentalists: Mstislav Rostropovich, Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Rudolf Serkin, Igor Oistrakh, Joseph Fuchs, Lynn Harrell, Maurizio Pollini; Singers: Birgit Nilsson, Luciano Pavarotti, Jessye Norman, Hermann Prey, Montserrat Caballé, José Carreras, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Victoria de Los Angeles, Nicolai Gedda, Régine Crespin, Brigitte Fassbänder, Samuel Ramey; Conductors: Karl Böhm, Sir Georg Solti, Rafael Kubelik, Eugen Jochum, Lorin Maazel, Neville Marriner, James Levine, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, William Steinberg, Seiji Ozawa, Ricardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and the composer/conductor Pierre Boulez.Sporadic creasing and minor to moderate age-toning along paper margin (not affecting drawings). Drawings in overall very good condition. About the artist: Georges was born of Russian parents in Sarny, Poland, in 1924. Following art studies in Warsaw, he came to the United States in 1949 and attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Art Student's League. While working as a translator for the American Express International Bank Corporation, Georges continued to pursue his avocation with gusto, exhibiting his artwork at venues throughout New York City. While he earned acclaim for his renderings of the city's architectural landmarks, it was his on-the-spot drawings of musicians in performance that attracted an especially appreciative audience. In a 1973 article published in conjunction with two simultaneous exhibitions, Georges explained the genesis of his long-running engagement with the concert hall: 'I've always enjoyed going to concerts, and one day I decided it would be fun to combine my interests in music and art and make sketches of musicians during performances.' He went on to describe the process itself: 'First of all, [the drawings] were executed rapidly, and often under difficult conditions. The lighting in concert halls is dim. And I had to work fast, because some performers were only on stage 20 minutes.' The ultimate stamp of approval for his efforts came from the subjects themselves: 'The nicest compliment I ever got was from pianist Arthur Rubinstein. When I asked him to sign the drawing, he said, Often when I see drawings of myself, I feel like putting a question mark on them- but this is not the case.' Indeed, the most remarkable feature of Georges's oeuvre, apart from the astounding range of performers who gladly expressed their approval and appreciation by signing, is the skill with which the drawings are accomplished. Longtime autograph collectors are only too aware of the curious genre of celebrity-signed 'fan drawings,' amateur efforts whose artistic merit seldom measures up to their sincerity. Georges's work, on the other hand, not only demonstrates a consummate skill in capturing the likeness of his subject, but also the spontaneity and excitement of the moment.* Luciano Pavarotti; Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Montserrat Caballé, Régine Crespin, Sir Georg Solti, Samuel Ramey. Item Description: Cordier, Sinica, col. 638; Löwendahl 718; Walravens 132. First and only edition of a publication of primary documents and notes concerning China in general and the Jesuits in China in particular, written and compiled by the remarkable Nürnberg Unitarian scholar Christoph Gottlieb von Murr (1733-1811). The full-page woodcut in Chinese giving a Linnaean classification of Chinese quadrupeds is the first Linnaean classification of Chinese animals and probably the first Linnaeana of any sort in Chinese. In 1706, at the height of the Chinese Rites Controversy, the Kangxi Emperor appointed two Jesuit missionaries as his envoys to Rome, but both died when their ship capsized off the coast of Portugal. In 1708 he appointed two new envoys, who died in 1711 and 1720. In 1716 the Emperor issued an edict on 31 October: a circular letter to all Westerners in China, noting that no word about the four envoys had been received and that there had been no response to the Emperor's enquires, and that the Imperial government therefore could not place its trust in any communications from the West. The rites issue lead the Emperor to expel Catholic missionaries from China and severely damaged Sino-European relations. In fine condition. The back board is very slightly rubbed and the letterpress spine label is slightly worn, but the binding is otherwise also fine. A fine copy of an important work on China and the Jesuits there, by an excellent and versatile scholar. Bookseller Inventory # H6GFM6O4UFYA
