Item Description: [Guatemala, and various locations in Central America. 1800-1910]., 1910. More than 2000 printed items. With much additional later printed material. Various sizes, with many folios, broadsides, and octavo pamphlets. A few documents soiled or lightly dampstained, with scattered wear and chipping. Some age toning and foxing, scattered minor worming. Many items housed in individual plastic sleeves or paper folders. Overall, very good. A remarkable collection of Central American material, with over 2000 imprints from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the items were printed in various locales in Guatemala, with a scattering of imprints from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The imprints included span the breadth of the 19th century and on into the 20th. Approximately seventy-five percent of these date from the 1820s to the 1880s. This rich collection holds a tremendous amount of research potential in a number of areas. It includes a significant number of ephemeral broadsides and other political material, documenting the turbulent political scene in Guatemala from independence to the early 20th century. Guatemala and the rest of Central America - El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica - declared independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. This federation lasted until 1840, when civil war tore the region into separate states. From there, a series of presidencies and lengthy dictatorships dominated the political landscape, all documented in the material of the present collection. One important broadside from 1854 proclaims President Rafael Carrera (1814-65) to be the supreme and perpetual leader of Guatemala for life, a position he held from 1851 until his death in 1865. There are extensive runs of select items, such as the MENSAJE DE PRESIDENTE and the rebuttal CONTESTACIONS DE L'ASSEMBLE, which run from the 1850s through the early 1900s (about 100 items). There is also a series of DISCURSOS commemorating Central American independence dating to roughly the same time frame (about forty items). Several runs of official periodicals are also included here, among them the BOLETIN OFICIAL (about sixty issues from the 1830s); and the BOLETIN DE NOTICIAS (seventeen issues from the 1870s), which documents the last days of the government of Vicente Cerna Sandoval. In the later material there is a significant number of political broadsides and proclamas from the presidency of dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, many bearing a woodcut portrait of the president. Cabrera (1857-1924) was in office from 1898 to 1920, suppressing several revolts against his rule. Additionally, there are periodicals, government publications, and numerous pamphlets on a wide variety of subjects. The 1870s saw a flurry of modernization in Guatemala, and this collection mirrors that activity, with more imprints (approximately 600) from that decade than any other. A handful of items from the mid- to late-19th century concern the lottery, the circus, bullfights, and the theatre in Guatemala. There is also a discrete cache of medical- related material, covering cholera outbreaks, whooping cough, and similar topics. Another segment covers the development of the railroad and the telegraph in Guatemala and Central America. There are also pamphlets on subjects such as religion, the military, economics, laws, and more. An impressive and extensive collection, documenting hundreds of years of Guatemalan history. This collection was built over many years by a scholar of the region, and clearly could not be equaled today. Bookseller Inventory # WRCAM 46256

Item Description: Adams H-394; Ahmanson-Murphy 62 & 62a; Dibdin II, p. 19; Dibdin, Introduction (1804), p. 152; PMM 41; Renouard, Annnales 8 (p. 35). Splendid copy of the famous first edition of the original Greek text of the works of Herodotus (ca. 484 BC- ca. 425 BC), "the father of history," published and edited by Aldus Manutius at Venice on the basis of many manuscripts, demonstrating Aldus's dedication to Giovanni Calfurnio da Brescia. By promoting Herodotus as a key to ancient history and society and providing a reliable text, it set the stage for his popularity in the 16th century. It covers the growth of the Persian Empire, the history of Egypt, Persian incursions into Greece, the defeat of the Persians in 490 BC, the Persian king Xerxes's attempt to avenge the Persian defeat and their defeat once again in 479 BC. But perhaps of greatest interest are the strange and fantastic tales and anecdotes, including the circumnavigation of Africa. He carefully distinguished what his sources said from his own opinions, while reporting both (proving the circumnavigation of Africa by the report of the sun to the north, even though he himself thought it impossible)."Herodotus is the earliest historian; his predecessors were by contrast chroniclers. He was the first to collect his materials systematically, to test their accuracy as far as he could, and to arrange his story so as to appeal to, as well as inform, his readers. . Certainly for the Persian war his authority forms the basis of all modern histories; and, more than that, it is the stuff of legends. Herodotus is far more than a valuable source: always readable, his work has been quoted and translated ever since" (PMM).The text is set entirely in Aldus's famous ligatured Greek type, with guide letters for the initials that were to be added by the illuminator (not added in the present copy, which remains as it came from the press), and a smaller Greek used without ligatures on the title-page. The title, list of the nine muses, quire signatures and colophon (the latter with a list of the quires and their collation) are in Greek and Latin, the Latin list of muses in the world's first italic type, introduced the previous year, and the rest in roman or roman capitals. The great 18th-century classical scholar Wesseling noted that this first edition is very faithful and accurate, compiled with great care and executed with considerable typographical elegance. Dibdin notes that Steven Bergler ranked this edition among the very best productions of the Aldine press. With extensive records of provenance; Lüder Kulenkamp (1771), A. Chr. Bocheer (1796), Chr. Fr. Harless[?] (1824), the Dukes of Arenberg (late 19th-century) and Albert Natural (20th century). In fine condition and with generous margins, with only some light stains on the first page and last page, and a couple tiny marginal worm holes in the last 4 leaves (in the margins except for 1 in the last leaf). Magnificent copy of a seminal first edition from a famous library. Bookseller Inventory # 98OH076596KH

Item Description: Palau 328839; USTC 343307. First edition, in Latin, of a report on the Portuguese in India and especially on their defeat of the Muslim Gujarat Sultanate at the second siege of Diu in 1546, written by the Portuguese humanist Diogo de Teive (ca. 1514-ca. 1570). The book opens with a 4-page dedication to King João III, dated 1 March 1548, and two verses (each occupying a full page), followed by the main text, dated August 1547.The Portuguese reached India in 1498 (and regarded it as their property under the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas concluded with Spain) but in the early years they met stiff resistance from the Gujarats, supported at various times by the Mamluks and the Ottoman Empire. Although they never penetrated far inland, the Portuguese gradually came to dominate the coastal areas, in particular expanding their territory and power in northwest India from 1509 to 1546. In 1546 the Gujarats under Khoja (or Khwaja) Sofar tried to retake Diu, lost in 1509, but after a seven-month siege they were routed by the Portuguese fleet under João de Castro. This established the European colonial power and the European spice trade in India (including what is now Pakistan), where Portugal was to be followed by the Dutch and especially England before most of India finally gained its independence in 1947. Small parts, including Diu, remained in Portuguese hands until 1961.Trimmed, shaving an accent on the title-page and the running head on a few pages, but otherwise in good condition, with some minor defects. The binding has several worm holes and the spine is damaged and partly restored. A contemporary account of the Portuguese defeat of the Muslim forces in Gujarat in 1546. Item Description: Ahmanson-Murphy 112; Hoffman 3, p.167; Kallendorf & Wells, Aldine Press Books 99; Renouard, pp. 60-62. Very important first edition of most of the Attic orators, the works of Demosthenes having been published earlier. It is one of the most important and beautiful books printed by the famous Aldine printing office, two years before Aldus Manutius's death. It includes texts by Aeschines, Lysias, Alcidamas, Anthisthenes, Damades, Andocides, Isaeus, Dinarchus, Antiphon, Lycurgus, Gorgias, Lesbonax, Herodes, Isocrates and Aristides. There are two important dedicatory letters by Aldus Manutius: one to Francesco Fasolo and one to Giovanni Battista Egnazio. The main texts are set entirely in Aldus's ligatured Greek type, a style he introduced in 1495 that established the main stream of Greek printing types that reigned for two hundred years. Provenance: British Museum Library (duplicate sale 1814); Charles P. Burney; Charles Bloomfield (on his death in 1857 his heirs returned the book to Charles Burney, who had given it to him); William Foyle. The leaf with a 2-line instruction to the binder, in volume 1, has been removed as intended (as in nearly every copy). Very occasional slight browning or faint stains, the lower margin of quire ff extended. In very good condition. The bindings are somewhat worn on the spine, hinges and edges, but still in good condition. Beautiful first edition of the Attic orators, rarely found in such good condition. Tamayo Rufino. Book by Juan Garcia Ponce. ******* and space, piercing a wrist and cutting into an eye, the central k executed as an insult-v along the nose, joined to an x. The nonpareil Rufino Tamayo autograph nearly spans the width of the drawing; its long T-bar highlights FAKE. Additional forensic documentation for the forgery declaration is provided by a matching period, late 60s' signature by Tamayo on the deluxe justification leaf in a rare limited edition book on his paintings owned by Jacob Weintraub. *******

Item Description: ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF C, 1951. Book Condition: Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is a significant, historical manuscript document archive of 120 pages handwritten by a Chinese teacher named Wang JiYao who was a teacher at the Food Oil factory, City of ZhangJiaKou, HeBei Province in the era of the anti-rights struggle of the 1950's. Historians and researchers and collectors of the era will note the schizophrenic nature of the times so clearly displayed by the totality of these papers. The man in this archive was a teacher born in early 1930s becoming a teacher in 1951. As the Chinese government launched a call for intellectuals to give advice and even criticize the leader of the government in early 1957 this teacher gave frank and reasonable advice and criticism of the government. Later that year, the situation reversed. He and thousands of other intellectuals in China who criticized their leaders and government were judged guilty of anti-socialist thought and right wing deviation. He was classified as a Rightist for what he said in his daily life. Some examples: "The brutality of the communist party is unsurpassed by the Qin Emperor"; "It should be fine to criticize Chairman Mao, because he is an educated man"; "If the leader refuses the criticism, then he should not be a leader". The writer was called to confess his so called crimes. The confession was written by Wang JiYao from 1951 to 1957, the material written before 1957 was related to his family, because he was born to a landowner's family, which was classified as the class enemy number one. Other reports were written by many coworkers to show Wang JiYao had the rightist ideas by revealing what he said in the past. No conviction material was attached. The 120 pages consist of more than 10 files, including: his registration forms in early 1950s; three impeachment or disclosure files [including testimony of co-workers; and five files of his confessions of guilt (70 pages!) in 1957. This archive is a particularly interesting encapsulation within one man's experience of a sadly all too typical occasion in mid 20th Century China. Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: One online source provides: The Anti-Rightist Movement of the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and early 1960s consisted of a series of campaigns to purge alleged "rightists" within the Communist Party of China (CPC) and abroad. The definition of "rightists" was not always consistent, sometimes including critics to the left of the government, but officially referred to those intellectuals who appeared to favour capitalism and class divisions and against collectivization. The campaigns were instigated by Chairman Mao Zedong and saw the political persecution of an estimated 550,000. The Anti-Rightist Movement was a reaction against the Hundred Flowers Campaign, which had promoted pluralism of expression and criticism of the government. Going perhaps as far back as the Long March there had been resentment against "rightists" inside the CPC, for example Zhang Bojun. The first wave of attacks began immediately following the end of the Hundred Flowers movement in July 1957. By the end of the year, 300,000 people had been labeled as rightists, including the writer Ding Ling. Future premier Zhu Rongji, then working in the State Planning Commission, was purged in 1958. Most of the accused were intellectuals. The penalties included informal criticism, "re-education through labour" and in some cases death. One main target was the independent legal system. Legal professionals were transferred to other jobs; judicial power was exercised instead by political cadres and the police. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Chinese Language. Ad 1: Unrecorded 1694 issue of a well-known and influential simple practical manual on the five orders of columns, written for the use of craftsmen by Symon Bosboom (1614-1662), Dutch architect and Amsterdam's official city stonemason. He discusses and extensively illustrates the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Composite (here called Roman) and Corinthian orders of column, along with doorways, arches, facades, etc., using them. Other illustrations show fireplaces, a church interior and exterior, geometrical diagrams, ornaments, etc.Ad 2: Rare Dutch edition of one of the most popular books on the art of perspective, by the engraver, publisher and expert on fortifications Henricus Hondius the elder (1573-1650). The book gives thorough review of the most famous earlier authors on perspective, including the founder of the genre Hans Vredeman de Vries. "The book provides a series of neatly conceived demonstrations of perspective in its abstract and applied forms and gives an original if brief analysis of the upwards convergence of tall verticals to a 'contre-poinct' when viewed with a plane tilted slightly toward the spectator" (Kemp, p. 112). The Bosboom lacks 1 text leaf, but both works are otherwise in good condition, with some mostly marginal stains and some marginal restorations. The binding has been rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. Two 17th-century classics on architecture and perspective. Bookseller Inventory # AB5F8JQ6DWIV

Item Description: [Colorado, circa 1915]., 1915. Twenty-four sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs. Each photograph hand- bound into the album on a cloth stub, measuring approximately 9.75 x 14 inches, each hand- titled in ink near bottom edge. Inscribed by the photographer opposite the first photograph, "Photographs by Henry Stark, Saint Louis." Folio. Contemporary full leather, front cover gilt, silk endpapers. Some edge wear and scuffing to the covers, spine ends and front joint chipped. Last four photographs loose from mounts. The photographs are mostly in excellent condition, with only slight dust-soiling to the versos of some and minor foxing to two of the loose plates. A unique copy of an amazing assortment of Rocky Mountain photographs. This album features exceptional, and, at times, breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountain National Park landscape, most with people, dwellings, and different modes of transportation (automobiles and horses) incorporated into the compositions. Titles, each handwritten in ink near the bottom edge, include: Twin Sisters Mountain On the High Drive Lunch at Loch Vale Timberline Cabin The Heart of the Rockies - Long's Peak "Going Fishing," Lawn Lake Lawn Lake and Cabin Fall River Road and Lodge Mts. Chapin and Chiquita Balanced Rock on Fern Lake Trail Gem Lake Long's Peak from Gem Lake Trail At Fern Lodge Big Thompson Canyon A Trail Thru the Spruces Bear Lake and Camp On Trail to Long's Peak Outlet of Odessa Lake On Trail to Long's Peak (second plate so titled) Fern Falls On Gem Lake Trail Odessa Lake Colorado Mountain Club Register at Gem Lake The Continental Divide In the winter of 1895, Stark ventured to Texas, traveling throughout and producing what is believed to be the first extensive photographic record of the Lone Star State. The following year, many of Stark's photographs documenting Texas appeared in the TEXARKANA GATEWAY TO TEXAS AND THE SOUTHWEST, which was printed by the Woodward and Tiernan Printing Co., St. Louis, and issued by the Iron Mountain Route, the Texas Pacific Railway, the Cotton Belt Route, and the International-Great Northern Railroad. An album titled VIEWS IN TEXAS was later assembled by Stark, and contained over 250 of his Texas photographs. The Dallas Historical Society houses the only known copy of this album. A publication printed in 1896 by Woodward and Tiernan, which features views on the Mississippi River, between St. Louis and New Orleans was credited to a photographer named Stark, and is likely referencing Henry Stark. He also produced photographs for Woodward and Tiernan's 1898 publication entitled THE HEART OF THE SOUTH: ALONG THE LINE OF THE ATLANTA AND WEST POINT RAILROAD AND WESTERN RAILWAY OF ALABAMA. It is unclear why Stark produced this particular album, or why he was photographing Colorado at this particular time. Perhaps he produced the present work as a personal copy or on behalf of the Federal Government to promote Rocky Mountain National Park, which was officially established on January 26, 1915. Considering the artistic and highly professional quality of the photographs, the album was clearly created to showcase the majestic beauty of the Rockies as well as Stark's remarkable photographic vision. Item Description: 2000 flyers; A unique genre of graphic design, the rave flyer is bred entirely underground. The rave scene has had a tremendous impact on contemporary mainstream culture in its musical, social and creative growth. The flyer is the primary testament of this transmission, standing not only as an important commercial art form, but also as a concise and substantive record of an entire movement. This collection documents some of the best English rave flyers of the last two decades – a colorful and incredible visual record of a movement that has forever changed culture. There are also some Australian and Scottish flyers from major city raves. Rave flyers became one of the most potent symbols of youth culture in the 1990s – their bright colors signifying a return to psychedelia, their computer-generated design a clue to future technology fetishes, their dense text an invitation to a subculture with its own deities and language. Item Description: c, 1910. The exterior dimensions are 760 x 62o mms., while the oval portrait is 560 x 460 mms. The original painting was sold at Christie's South Kensington in November, 2008, sold for £103,250. One interesting feature of the painting is that Mrs. Thrale was described as having grey eyes; and they are definitely grey in the Christie's portrait. In this painting - copy or otherwise - her eyes are hazel. It was engraved for the European Magazine in 1786. Bookseller Inventory # 7080
