LIGHTLY AGED PAGES, A FEW LIBRARY STAMPS BUT NO MARKS IN TEXT. "Description: The three Long sisters of Welleswood, New Jersey, felt they could handle any problem, any crisis together. But suddenly, each was facing the most critical challenge of her life. Andrea, a single mom, was in a fight for survival, against cancer. Madge, who'd once lived a storybook life, needed to find forgiveness--if she ever could--for a husband who'd kept a shocking secret for years. Jenny, pregnant with her third child, longed to keep her husband's dream alive, whatever the sacrifice. Item Description: Covenant Communications Inc. 0, American Fork, UT. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1598118838 Brand new hardcover book! ; Kirtland, 1838. Among the Saints who remain, Julia Johnson and her children endure the bitter winter in poverty, struggling amidst illness and persecution to prepare to join the leaders of the Church in Far West. Meanwhile, Almon rises as an influential leader among the Canadian Saints and seeks land for them to settle in Missouri. Spring marks the joyful reunion of Delcena and her husband, Lyman, who has been in hiding. But separation looms large as the couple departs for Far West and Ezekiel realizes with dread that most of his family will soon follow. Indeed, as summer approaches and the Kirtland Poor Camp begins its historic exodus, Ezekiel is left behind with only Almera to comfort him?but she wants nothing more than to join her family in their journey out of Ohio, away from her harsh-tempered, controlling husband. Typhoid fever strikes the traveling camp, and those already gathered in Missouri are shaken as mobs become more aggressive and overzealous Danites step in to force order. By the time Almon?s company of Canadian saints arrives in Far West, the city is nearly under siege, and the lives of many innocent Saints are threatened?including that of the Prophet himself. ; Vol. 4; 6.5" x 9.5"; 276 pages; Bookseller Inventory # 47659

Item Description: Simon & Schuster, 2013. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Katherine is only five-years-old. Struck dumb with grief at her mothers death, it is down to her father, the heartbroken minister Tyler Caskey, to bring his daughter out of silence she has observed in the wake of the familys tragedy. But Tyler Caskey is barely surviving himself. His cold, church-assigned home is colder still since Laurens death, and he struggles to find the right words for his sermons; struggles to be a leader to his congregation when he himself is lost. When Katherines schoolteacher calls to discuss his daughters anti-social behaviour, it sparks a chain of events that begins to tear down Tylers defences. The small-town rumour-mill has much to make of Katherines odd behaviour, and even more to say about Tylers relationship with his housekeeper, Connie Hatch. And in Tylers darkest hour, a startling discovery will test his congregations humanity - and his own will to endure the kinds of trials that sooner or later test us all. From the Orange Prize-shortlisted author of Amy & Isabelle, this is a startlingly beautiful novel about love and abandonment, faith and hypocrisy; and the peril of family secrets?. Paperback. Item Description: William Sloane Associates (c.1948), New York, 1948. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) William Meek (illustrator). First Edition. [a good solid copy, but with tape blemishes on both covers from where the jacket had at one time been affixed, and some larged inked numbers on the ffep; the jacket is pretty nice (with NO tape marks), despite some paper loss at the top of the spine and a very light thumb-sized rubbed spot at the right-hand edge of the front panel]. This epic satire of the American funeral industry -- published the same year as Evelyn Waugh's "The Loved One" -- has lurked (undeservedly) in the shadow of that more notorious work ever since. A caustic, often laugh-out-loud funny book, it recounts the saga of the Hope Family, a Midwestern undertaking dynasty, founders of "the first combined mortuary and cemetery in that section of the United States," The Vale of Hope -- ultimately franchised nationwide as The Vales Inc. Belfrage, an expatriate Brit (and politically about as far to the left of Waugh as possible) was a well-born English "gentleman" who miraculously acquired some serious class consciousness, and after a stint as a film critic (among other things) eventually became a political journalist and editor in the U.S., co-founding The National Guardian, a leading voice of progressive dissent during the McCarthy Era. In due time, this got him deported by the U.S. Government. NOISBN. Bookseller Inventory # 17463

Item Description: New York City, NY: Random House, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 298 pages. Published in 2006. The author's second novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Elizabeth Strout's remarkable second novel. "The word 'remarkable' plays a crucial role in Elizabeth Strout's 'Abide With Me'. That word best describes the novel itself. A brave, rare book" (Nicholas Delbanco). Elizabeth Strout began publishing late in life. She was a lawyer for many "utterly miserable" years before she finally decided, "No more law! I would rather fail miserably in life as a writer than as a lawyer" (Elizabeth Strout). She is a "mature" writer, the only writer worth reading, rather than a "flash-in-the-pan" prodigy (although she has been writing almost all her adult life, her lawyer years included). She is not a prolific writer either; it took her eight years to write this luminous second novel. An absolute "must-have" title for Elizabeth Strout collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Elizabeth Strout. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Signed copies of the First Edition will always be scarce because according to the author herself, the first print runs of her first three novels were "tiny" (her word) and the books immediately went into paperback thereafter. A very scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for "Olive Kitteridge". One of the finest living American writers. A fine copy.
