Item Description: Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars, Whitefriars, 1846. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. George Cruikshank (illustrator). Early Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This is an early revised and corrected edition of this classic by Dickens. It is one volume bound in full calf leather which is colored maroon with front and rear cover gold ruling at edges; The spine has six hubbed panels of which 4 are decorated with gilt work, two panels are dedicated to the title and the Author. The title and Author panels have blind-stamping which you can see but originally should, I think, have had leather labels which are gone or gilding is gone. The other four panels are bright with their gold decoration. The cover ruling is bright. There is also edge and inner cover dentelle gold decorated gilding. Top edge of text block is gilt. There are marbled end papers. There is edge scuff wear. There are the twenty-four Cruikshank engravings and there are 311 pages. At the rear of book text have been ( laid in) from the original cloth from this book the front cover, the spine piece and the rear cover. The front cover has, at its center, gold leaf and tendril decoration in the round with edges having scroll work blind-stamping; The spine piece shows off the wonderful gold pictorial work and the titling; The rear cover piece has the same stamping as the front cover but is all blind-stamped; The color of the original cloth is of a dark beige-brown-gray. Very attractive in all. The leather binding is marked and bound by Reviere and Son possibly from the 1920's. Bookseller Inventory # 063167

Item Description: London: for the author, by Bradbury & Evans, 1846, 1846. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, triple rule and foliate border to covers in blind, buff endpapers. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine slightly rolled and browned, spine ends slightly rubbed, tips a little bumped, cloth partly split at rear joint, hinges starting, a little minor foxing to contents; a very good copy. With 24 steel-engraved plates by George Cruikshank. First one-volume edition in the variant green cloth binding. Dickens's second novel, Oliver Twist was first published serially between February 1837 and April 1839 in Bentley's Miscellany, and then as a three-volume book by Richard Bentley in 1838 (six months before the initial serialization was complete). This single volume was substantially revised by Dickens, who had bought back his copyright from Richard Bentley; many of his revisions were in the direction of a more dramatic rendering of the text, in light of his experience of public reading. Gimbel A39; Carr B98.3. Bookseller Inventory # 101344
