Item Description: Patmos Press, South Daytona FL, 2002. Pictorial Hard Cover. Book Condition: New. No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. The Akathist Hymn is a profound, devotional poem, which sings the praises of the Holy Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary. It is a composite work by more than one of our Ecclesiastical Hymnographers, as we know it today. It was originally recited, or rather prayed, in the year 626AD in the Church of the Theotokos (Mother of God) of Vlachernae in Constantinople, on the occasion of the deliverance of the "Queen City" from the siege of the Avars. This particular Prayer Service is a very important one, and most certainly an integral part of our religious and ecclesiastical life. It is chanted in all the Orthodox Churches throughout the world during the first five Fridays of Great Lent. In essence, it constitutes a very concrete spiritual preparation for the awesome Holy Week and Easter Services. When we participate during the first Friday Service, we sense the feeling that we are commencing to ascend the spiritual steps of the lengthy Lenten period, which lead us to the peak, by the celebration of the Lord's Resurrection on the glorious Day of Pascha. The Akathist Hymn was not strange to the Latin or Roman Catholic Papal Church, even though apart from the Eastern Orthodox Church since 1054AD. There is a reference that Pope Benedict XIV on May 4, 1746 granted an indulgence of fifty days to the Latin and Eastern Rite Catholics for each recitation of this "Hymn." Fr. Vincent McNabb, a Roman Catholic Priest in London, translated the Akathist Hymn into English in 1934. His remarks in the foreword of his translation are significant, being that he stated: "No apology is needed for introducing the Akathist to the Christian West. Indeed the West might well be apologetic about the neglect or ignorance of such a liturgical and literary masterpiece!" In any of the Orthodox Service Books we readily see that our Holy Mother and Ever-Virgin Theotokos (Birth-Giver of God) is at the center of many services, in which prayers abound for her interceding to her Son and our God, in our behalf. The Virgin Mary is the most exalted and most honored person by God. She is the most revered and loved by humans. 112pp. Each, Greek & English. Bookseller Inventory # 4044

Item Description: Brill, Netherlands, 2001. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 247 x 164 mm. Brand New Book. The Akathistos Hymn, the most famous work of Byzantine hymnography, has been enshrined in the Orthodox liturgy since the year 626, and its image of the Virgin Mary has exerted a strong influence upon Marian poetry and literature. Anonymous, undated and highly rhetorical, the hymn has presented a challenge to scholars over the years. This study has been undertaken by an innovative method. The approach brings new insights to the era which brought forth the hymn, and the metaphorical image of the Virgin becomes conceptually accessible to the modern-day reader. The investigation leads to the conclusion that the Council of Ephesus (431) constitutes the most likely historical context for the hymn s composition. The book will be of value to all scholars of early Byzantine and Marian studies. Bookseller Inventory # AAN9789004120884

Euro 325,00.- the pictorial cycles of the akathistos hymn for the virgin by Ioannis Spatharakis The pictorial cycles of the Akathistos reveal how the artists and their sponsors interpreted each of the twenty-four stanzas of this celebrated hymn for the Virgin. They may help scholars, other than art historians, who have neglected this visual aspect until now in their vast bibliography, to form a better idea of the multiple meaning of the Akathistos text. This book aims to enrich the comparatively limited bibliography on the illustration of the Akathistos, also by including a few practically unknown cycles, mainly from Crete. The author of this publication mainly gathered the material for this study when he was lecturing at the University of Crete in Rethymnon (1980-1990). He studied there six Akathistos cycles decorating churches, to which he primarily focuses here; equal attention is, however, paid to the cycles outside Crete. In total, twenty-two cycles of the Akathistos are examined here, painted in murals, manuscripts and icons. The first part of this book investigates the iconography of the Akathistos per cycle. But if one would also like to know how the pictures look per stanza, he will be faced with the tiring task of searching for it in every cycle. Therefore, the decoration of the Akathistos is also examined per stanza in a separate chapter. The various cycles are illustrated in this book with approximately three hundred reproductions in colour. The black and white reproductions display them per stanza, so that the reader can perceive the iconography of a certain stanza in almost a glance. Comparative material appears in both kinds of reproductions, colour and black and white.
