Bookseller Inventory # 36019

Folio (45 x 29 cm). Very nice contemporary half calf, spine richly gilt. Map slightly cropped in right-hand margin, but only touching frame, no loss of picture. A fine, very attractive copy of a particularly scarce work. Bound before that: Cailliaud, Frédéric. Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1821. Pp. XVII, 120. With 24 (1 colour) plates (including 2 maps). I) Voyage y l'oasis de Syouah: An important work on Siwa and at the same time the only source on Drovetti's research in the oasis - a particularly rare book! - In September 1819, Cailliaud travelled from Fayun westward to Siwa, where he carried out important research which was the foundation of the scientific discovery and exploration of Siwa oasis. In 1820 Bernardino Drovetti arrrived in Siwa together with Mehmed Ali's expedition. Accompanied by 2 draftsmen and protected by the Egyptian troups, Drovetti was able to explore the oasis and to have plans and views drawn. Thus, he managed to supplement the picture Cailliaud had given of Siwa. He was also the first European to visit the village of Agharmi. Drovetti's and Cailliaud's reports were sent to Jomard who edited and published them. II) Voyage à l'oasis de Thèbes: In 1815, Cailliaud travelled to Nubia together with B. Drovetti. When he had returned, Mehmed Ali advised him to explore the adjacent desert regions near Egypt. First he went east through the Arabian desert to the Red Sea. After 7 days he reached the diamond mines at Djebel Subara. From Djebel Kebrit, his easternmost point, he went back to the Nile. In June 1818 he went east of Esna to the Great Oasis (Kharga), which, although Poncet und Browne had already seen it, had still remained unexplored. - The plates show Sekket, Douch El Qualah, Chargeh, El Gabouet, the ruins of Chargeh, etc. Also contains the only publication of Bernardino Drovetti's 'Le Voyage à l'Oasis du Dakel'. Drovetti was, after Edmonstone, the second explorer to reach Dakel. - A separate second volume of the Voyage a l'oasis de Thèbes was issued in 1824. Bookseller Inventory # 21024

Item Description: London, Charles Eyre and William Strahan, 1774., 1774. Small folio (232 x 280 mm). 36 ff. Contemp. marbled wrappers. All edges gilt. The Regulating Act of 1773, published in Persian and English on opposite pages. - British interest in the Persia and the Arabian Gulf originated in the 16th century and steadily increased as British India’s importance rose in the 18th century. In the beginning, the agenda was primarily of a commercial character: realizing the region's significance, the British fleet supported Shah Abbas in expelling the Portuguese from Hormuz in 1622. In return, the British East India Company was permitted to establish a trading post in the coastal city of Bandar 'Abbas, which became their principal port in the Gulf. The Company became responsible for conducting British foreign policy in the region, and concluded various treaties, agreements and engagements with Gulf states. In 1763 the EIC established a permanent residency at Bushehr, on the Persian side of the Gulf. By the early 1770s, the East India Company was in severe financial straights due both to corruption and nepotism as well as from steeply declining tea sales to America and heavy annual payments made to maintain the trading monopoly. When approached for assistance, the government enacted legislation to supervise ("regulate") the activities of the Company. This "Act for establishing certain Regulations for the better Management of the Affairs of the East India Company" constituted the first step toward eventual British government control of India, thus radically limiting the role of EIC in the administration of India. In 1784, little more than a decade later, Pitt's India Act would take reforms even further. - Another issue in the same year is known, with identical typesetting, but in which each page of text is enclosed within an engraved frame (these copies are printed in a taller folio format ). Slight edge repairs; spine restored. From the library of William Aldersey, president of the board of trade in Bengal, with his ownership (dated 1774) to recto of f. 1. ESTC T145421. OCLC 560572771. Item Description: La Imprenta Real], [Madrid, 1802. Folio. Period marbled paper wrappers A work of the greatest rarity and beauty: the atlas to one of the scarcest Pacific voyages and the last great Spanish exploration of the Nootka Sound and the northwest coast of America. The two ships, Sutil and Mexicana, were associated with the Malaspina expedition but pursued a separate course and made their own observations. The ships made a complete survey of the shore at the east end of the strait of Juan de Fuca on the coast of present-day British Columbia, arriving at Nootka Sound in the spring of 1792 and working through the summer. This atlas contains notable maps and plates associated with the expedition. The maps show the California coast from Baja to the northwest, Vancouver Island and the waters around it, the coast of Alaska and British Columbia, a more detailed map of California from Cape San Lucas to Cape Mendicino, the port of San Diego, Monterey Bay, Nootka, and two more bays near Juan de Fuca. The plates include two wonderful folding aquatints of scenes at Nootka showing native houses, boats and scenery; two portraits of Nootka chiefs; a plate of the famous shaman prayer box; and two plates of native woodcarving. Item Description: Venice: Gio. Battista Ciotti, 1599, 1599. 4to., (8 x 5 7/8 inches). Vignette title-page, one engraved plate of a compass rose, five maps, and 26 vignettes, including two printed in sanguine. Contemporary limp vellum, title in manuscript on the spine (skillfully rebacked preserving the original spine, 2 pairs of ties renewed). First Italian edition, first published in Dutch by Cornelius Claez in 1598, and an immediate bestseller. De Veer's account of Barentz's three voyages attempting to discover a Northeast Passage, is a major work of arctic exploration. Illustrated with magnificent maps of the area, and with fine plates depicting the trials and tribulations of the three voyages and Berentz' over-wintering on the remote and inhospitable Nova Zembla. In the late 15th century Portuguese navigators discovered a sea route to Asia, and immediately caused other nations to covet their exclusive and lucrative trade in rare and exotic spices such as pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. Eventually an alternative route to the Indies around the Cape of Good Hope was established in 1597 but not before the Dutch had made three attempts to find a Northeast Passage to Asia. The first Dutch expedition to Asia left from the island of Texel in June 1594. Willem Barentsz commanded two ships which followed the route Petrus Plancius proposed and reached the northernmost point of Novaya Zemlya, but had to return due to the impenetrability of the pack ice. Two other ships, which had taken an alternative route proposed by Jan Huygen van Linschoten, discovered that the Kara Sea was not an inland sea, but an open waterway which could therefore be the long looked for gateway to Asia. On this occasion all four ships returned safely to the Dutch Republic. The second expedition of seven ships, heavily laden with money and commodities for the Asian market, embarked in 1595 following Linschoten's route. It successfully manoeuvred through the Waijgats Strait. Unfortunately freezing temperatures made the Kara Sea impenetrable and the fleet was forced to return to Amsterdam. In May 1596, the third and most infamous expedition left Amsterdam, aiming to round Novaya Zemlya to the north, the route which Plancius had mapped in 1594. This expedition came Bear Island and Spitsbergen. While one of the only two ships on this more cautious voyage returned to the United Provinces to report the discoveries to the merchants who had financed the expedition, Barentsz and Van Heemskerck, and their crew of seventeen men, including the author of this work Gerrit de Veer, continued towards Novaya Zemlya. After successfully rounding the northernmost point of Novaya Zemlya, disaster struck and the ship was caught in the ice. Despite all efforts there was no other option but to spend the winter in the Arctic region. A polar bear proof cabin was constructed from the ship's wood, called the Behouden Huys, a process beautifully illustrated in this work. This left only two smaller vessels for the homeward journey in June 1597. In open boats the survivors sledged and sailed 1600 miles around the northern cape, down the length of Novaya Zemlya, and out across the White Sea to safety on the Kola Peninsula. Their perilous voyage took six weeks, after which they eventually arrived at a Russian fishing village, but tragically Willem Barentsz and four others had already succumbed to scurvy. Item Description: Mexico: C. Martin Rivera, 1826., 1826. 2 parts in one volume. 8vo., (8 x 5 inches). Modern full red crushed morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf, contemporary yellow paper wrappers bound in at end. First Mexican edition, first published in Madrid in 1820, of the official publication of documents related to the negotiations between the U.S. and Spain relating to the boundaries established by the Louisiana Purchase. Onis was the Spanish ambassador to Washington, who conducted negotiations with President Monroe and John Quincy Adams, which resulted in the Treaty of 1819, the "Adams-Onis Treat" or, "the Transcontinental Treaty, which established the United States' first transcontinental boundary and acquired Florida. The treaty arose from a long-standing territorial dispute between the United States and Spain over the precise boundaries of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Spanish officials, citing a prior agreement with France, first contested the legitimacy of Napoleon's sale of the Louisiana territory and then attempted to define its boundaries as the eastern bank of the Mississippi River (effectively nullifying the purchase) and excluding the province of West Florida, claimed by the United States. The Napoleonic Wars delayed negotiations until 1817, when they quickly became deadlocked. "Andrew Jackson's invasion of Florida during the First Seminole War of 1817-1818 broke the deadlock. Spain's minister to the United States and chief negotiator Don Luis de Onís, confronted by the prospect of losing Florida to American conquest, agreed to Secretary of State John Quincy Adams's proposed treaty, which ceded both East and West Florida to the United States and established a transcontinental boundary extending to the Oregon coast. In exchange, Adams gave up a dubious claim to Texas and assumed five million dollars in American citizens' claims against the Spanish government. "By resolving the dispute with Spain, the Adams-Onís Treaty finalized the Louisiana Purchase. By conceding the claim to Texas, the agreement contributed to later agitation for the "reannexation of Texas," which proslavery expansionists alleged had been wrongly given away. The western boundary established by the treaty acknowledged California and the Southwest as Mexican territory, setting the stage for the conquest of those lands by the United States in 1848" (William Earl Weeks for ANB). Item Description: [Paris, Imprimerie impériale, 1805]., 1805. 4to. 306 pp. With woodcut title borders. Original printed wrappers. Rare translation of the "Bulletins de la Grande Armée" into Arabic, here rendered as "Book of the events of the war between France and Austria at the end of the year 1805 AD, i.e. 1220 A.H.". The conflict in question is the War of the Third Coalition, during which Napoleon defeated an alliance of Austria, Russia, and others in the Battle of Austerlitz. In the background of this war, the Russo-Turkish War broke out, a conflict that was to last until 1812. This translation of the war chronicle, which begins with a speech of Napoleon addressed to the Muslim clergy, was probably disseminated in the Arabic-speaking world - especially in Egypt - for propaganda purposes. - The original wrappers show stars and the crescent on both covers. A fine, exceptionally clean copy. Only three copies located on OCLC (none in America). OCLC 776990649. Bookseller Inventory # 33477
