Item Description: Palo Alto, CA: Modernbook Gallery, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 152 pages. Published in 2008. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 144 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously with and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The latter was also issued in a very small and limited print run. Both editions are now very scarce. A stunningly beautiful production by Maggie Taylor: Oversize-volume format. Purple cloth boards with titles on spine, as issued. Art by Maggie Taylor. Lewis Carroll's text is reproduced in its entirety. Essay by Norman M. Holland. 6.5 X 6.5 inch original color print laid inside the box, underneath the book. Printed on thick coated stock paper in China to the highest standards. Handmade purple cloth clamshell box. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in its most collectible format, Maggie Taylor's dazzling new interpretation of the beloved classic. The 1862 First Edition contained illustrations by Lewis Carroll himself. Artists and writers have since created their own versions of the world's greatest "children's classic". They are as diverse as Salvador Dali, Susan Sontag, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Sabuda, countless stage adaptations, eleven Hollywood film versions, and a rock opera by Marilyn Manson. No other children's book has been accorded such creative reinvention. According to Harold Bloom, Carroll redefined "children's book": Alice is the most mature, intelligent, and reflective character, hounded by petulant, stupid, and petty grown-ups. Children's books now typically contrast the inquisitive intelligence of children with the oppressive immaturity of adults, descendants of Alice all. The most celebrated Artist Book interpretations remain the 1865 Edition by Sir John Tenniel and the 1907 Edition by Arthur Rackham. They are Maggie Taylor's inspirations as she fuses The Old (European iconography, Victorian portraiture, and early photography) with The New (Surrealism, digital technology, and contemporary American art). "In Taylor's strange, parallel universe, birds ride bicycles, ideas materialize in the shape of clouds, and wings sprout from the backs of prim Victorian women. Taylor uses Adobe Photoshop and an Iris Printer to produce images of surprising beauty and emotional impact" (Publisher's blurb). Anyone who owns a computer has access to Adobe Photoshop; there is nothing terribly sophisticated or difficult about the software. In that sense, it is very much like the camera. In Maggie Taylor's hands, however, this utilitarian technology becomes the means to achieve stupendous creative ends. Her Artist Book is worthy of her predecessors, a masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" edition for Lewis Carroll and Maggie Taylor collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Label, which is delicately and neatly pasted on the box. The book itself is very prominently and beautifully signed in pen on the title page by Maggie Taylor. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. It also comes with a stunningly beautiful 6.5 X 6.5 original color print of "Three Strange Adventures", which is matted and laid into the box, also very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year she produced the print) in pencil by the artist/photographer: "Maggie Taylor 2006". This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of only two copies of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 44 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EDITION OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0980104416. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 19083

Item Description: Nottingham Hodder and Stoughton Limited, for Boots Pure Drug Co., Ltd. [1932], 1932. First edition with Hudson's illustrations and the Centenary edition of Carroll’s birth. 12 tipped in full color plates, also numerous black & orange illustrations throughout the text by Gwynned Hudson. 4to, publisher’s full red cloth with full gilt pictorial designs and lettering on the upper cover and spine, in the scarce dustjacket with pastedown colour plate on the upper cover. 180. A fine copy with only mild mellowing to the spine of the dustjacket. QUITE SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION AND ESPECIALLY IN THE DUSTJACKET. This book is a visual feast of color and decoration. Hudson’s illustrations evoke a magical world of fancy for Carroll’s classic work Though Hudson did not stray far from the original vision of John Tenniel's drawings, she perhaps instilled her work with a more lively spirit. Her use of color reminds one of Rene Bull or Edward Detmold. A copy of this book with the dustjacket is a very nice find. A very pleasing edition of what is perhaps the most fantastic children’s story of all time. Bookseller Inventory # 22307

Item Description: Macmillan and Co., Limited, London, 1928. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Tenniel, John (illustrator). 1st Thus Edition. The 1928 Macmillan Alice books with dustjackets in Gaylord covers. Macmillan's cloth-bound octavo editions which essentially means that they were deluxe trade editions (not the miniature, not the pocket, not the children's.) The design of these editions inspired the general design of many later 20th century Lewis Carroll releases. Very scarce, indeed, in jackets. Wonderland is the 1928 in a 1932 printing. Looking-Glass is the 1928 1st thus. Published & printed in England, these apparently made their way to the United States since they have stamped dustjacket prices of $2.00. Tenniel b&w illustrations throughout with a total of 32 color plates. 442 pp. 3-color pictorial cloth with color pastedowns and endpapers. Books are clean, square, bright, flat, solid, and unmarked with excellent color inside & out. Lovely interiors. Binding opens a bit wide in two spots in Looking-Glass. A very little bit of edgewear. Some small dark spots to the foot of each book which do not impinge on the interior; Wonderland has a little foxing to the head which also does not extend into the interior. Dustjackets Good only: whole with chips and wear to the edges -- still about 96% present. Some fading and some discoloration but, all in all, they are weathered in an attractive and uniform manner; the stars of the show here are the cover illustrations which present quite well. Wonderland has almost a full page of Lewis Carroll adverts with prices to the back cover. (As is often the case with such things, the 6/- price on the backstrip of the dustjacket cannot, apparently, be matched to any of the prices on the back cover.) We ship daily. Out to you w/tracking or insurance. Bookseller Inventory # 5000050510505
