Item Description: London: Harper & Brothers, 1901. 8vo, xvii, 193 pp. with frontispiece portrait of Carroll, forty black and white plates by Newell, and decorative page borders in green by Robert Murray Wright. Original white paper boards and green dustjacket, both with titles and embossed image of Alice in gilt. Boards slightly spotted, jacket fading to brown and cracking at folds, complete but for a chip in the crown of the spine and very rarely seen better. First edition illustrated by Peter Newell. Newell was the first major illustrator to tackle Carroll's work after Tenniel (Rackham's Alice was not published until 1907) and the first to depart significantly from Tenniel's vision, opening the door to the many varied interpretations of the twentieth century. His soft pencil drawings emphasize the comedy in the book and often depict moments that Tenniel and the intervening illustrators ignored, such as the three sisters who lived at the bottom of the well and the moment the hedgehog croquet balls commence to fight. An important milestone in the history of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Bookseller Inventory # 106388

Item Description: Palo Alto, CA: Modernbook Gallery, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 152 pages. Published in 2008. Artist Book. Now considered a contemporary art photography classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Maggie Taylor: Oversize-volume format. Pale purple cloth boards with titles on spine, as issued. Art by Maggie Taylor. Lewis Carroll's text is reproduced in its entirety. Essay by Norman M. Holland. Printed on thick coated stock paper in China to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Maggie Taylor's dazzling new interpretation of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland". The beloved classic's 1862 First Edition contained illustrations by Lewis Carroll himself. Artists and writers have since created their own versions of the world's greatest "children's classic". They include countless stage adaptations, eleven Hollywood film versions, and a rock opera by Marilyn Manson. No other children's book has been accorded such creative reinvention. According to Harold Bloom, Carroll redefined "children's book": Alice is the most mature, intelligent, and reflective character, hounded by petulant, stupid, and petty grown-ups. Children's books now typically contrast the inquisitive intelligence of children with the oppressive immaturity of adults, descendants of Alice all. The most celebrated Artist Book interpretations remain the 1865 Edition by Sir John Tenniel and the 1907 Edition by Arthur Rackham. They are Maggie Taylor's inspirations as she fuses The Old (European iconography, Victorian portraiture, and early photography) with The New (Surrealism, digital technology, and contemporary American art). Anyone who owns a computer has access to Adobe Photoshop; there is nothing terribly sophisticated or difficult about the software. In that sense, it is very much like the camera. In Maggie Taylor's hands, however, this utilitarian technology becomes the means to achieve stupendous creative ends. Her Artist Book is worthy of her predecessors, a masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" title for Lewis Carroll and Maggie Taylor collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in pen on the title page by Maggie Taylor. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a contemporary art and photography classic. As far as we know, this is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online sell for $500 and up. A rare signed copy thus. 44 color plates. One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0980104416. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 15205
