Item Description: Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York and London, 1902. Hardcover. Peter Newell (illustrator). 192; 211pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] Parchment vellum spine and boards with decorative gilt lettering on the spine and front covers, and small vignettes of Alice stamped in gilt on the front covers. Top edges gilt; other edges deckled. Photographically illustrated frontispieces of Lewis Carroll and Peter Newell. Ornamental light green borders in the margins by Robert Murray Wright. Fair and good condition only. The spine and covers are lightly bumped and have multiple light moisture stains. The spines are a bit rolled. The hinges are soft, and there are sporadic cracks in the text block. One of the volumes has a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endsheet, and the other volume has an inscription on the front flyleaf. A number of pages and illustrations (more so in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) are either completely detached, or hanging on by a thread. A handful of pages have small losses from the edges, or small closed tears in the margins. *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is missing the illustrations at pp. 122 and 182. Illustrated by Peter Newell. Peter Newell was the first major illustrator of the Alice stories after John Tenniel, and like Tenniel, he too built his reputation as a political cartoonist.
