Item Description: Palo Alto, CA: Modernbook Gallery, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 152 pages. Published in 2008. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. Limited Clamshell Box Edition of 144 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously with and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The latter was also issued in a very small and limited print run. Both editions are now very scarce. A stunningly beautiful production by Maggie Taylor: Oversize-volume format. Purple cloth boards with titles on spine, as issued. Art by Maggie Taylor. Lewis Carroll's text is reproduced in its entirety. Essay by Norman M. Holland. 6.5 X 6.5 inch original color print laid inside the box, underneath the book. Printed on thick coated stock paper in China to the highest standards. Handmade purple cloth clamshell box. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in its most collectible format, Maggie Taylor's dazzling new interpretation of the beloved classic. The 1862 First Edition contained illustrations by Lewis Carroll himself. Artists and writers have since created their own versions of the world's greatest "children's classic". They are as diverse as Salvador Dali, Susan Sontag, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Sabuda, countless stage adaptations, eleven Hollywood film versions, and a rock opera by Marilyn Manson. No other children's book has been accorded such creative reinvention. According to Harold Bloom, Carroll redefined "children's book": Alice is the most mature, intelligent, and reflective character, hounded by petulant, stupid, and petty grown-ups. Children's books now typically contrast the inquisitive intelligence of children with the oppressive immaturity of adults, descendants of Alice all. The most celebrated Artist Book interpretations remain the 1865 Edition by Sir John Tenniel and the 1907 Edition by Arthur Rackham. They are Maggie Taylor's inspirations as she fuses The Old (European iconography, Victorian portraiture, and early photography) with The New (Surrealism, digital technology, and contemporary American art). "In Taylor's strange, parallel universe, birds ride bicycles, ideas materialize in the shape of clouds, and wings sprout from the backs of prim Victorian women. Taylor uses Adobe Photoshop and an Iris Printer to produce images of surprising beauty and emotional impact" (Publisher's blurb). Anyone who owns a computer has access to Adobe Photoshop; there is nothing terribly sophisticated or difficult about the software. In that sense, it is very much like the camera. In Maggie Taylor's hands, however, this utilitarian technology becomes the means to achieve stupendous creative ends. Her Artist Book is worthy of her predecessors, a masterpiece. An absolute "must-have" edition for Lewis Carroll and Maggie Taylor collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Label, which is delicately and neatly pasted on the box. The book itself is very prominently and beautifully signed in pen on the title page by Maggie Taylor. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. It also comes with a stunningly beautiful 6.5 X 6.5 original color print of "Three Strange Adventures", which is matted and laid into the box, also very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year she produced the print) in pencil by the artist/photographer: "Maggie Taylor 2006". This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of only two copies of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 44 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER EDITION OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0980104416. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 19083

Item Description: Race Point Publishing, United States, 2014. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 311 x 260 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. Alice s Wonderland dives down the rabbit hole and looks at the dazzling ways that Wonderland has been imagined by artists, filmmakers, writers, and more. Get a behind-the-scenes looks at how the books were created, meet Alice Liddell, the inspiration for the fictional Alice, and view the original manuscript copy of Alice in Wonderland, illustrated in Carroll s own hand. The fantastical world imagined by Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) - where a white rabbit carries a pocket watch, a crying baby morphs into a squealing pig, and a flamingo is used as a croquet mallet - has inspired countless artists to produce some of their best work. Illustrators such as John Tenniel, chose to tackle the work directly, producing illustrations, films, and shows that strive to accurately depict Wonderland. Others, such as artist Salvador Dali and director Tim Burton, freely adapted Dodgson s creation, using it as a springboard for their own incredible interpretations. Lushly illustrated paintings, artwork, and sketches, Alice s Wonderland explores how artists in different fields like art, music, theater, film, and more have interpreted Carroll s works through the ages. A must-have book for any Alice fan. Bookseller Inventory # AA29781937994976
