Amazing Stories -- Buck Rogers 1928 Debut
Book Description: Experimenter Publishing, 1928. Soft cover. Book Condition: Good. Frank Paul (Cover) (illustrator). 1st Edition. 5 5/8 x 8 1/8 inches. This issue of Amazing Stories for August, 1928 (Volume 3 No 5) includes a story that had a premier impact on the world of science fiction -- the novella called Armageddon 2419, featuring a hero named Anthony Rogers. Now, our hero was never called Buck in either this debut story or its sequel, Airlords of Han (Amazing Stories, March 1929): That name was created for the Buck Rogers comic strip which began appearing in January of 1929, and the nickname was reportedly borrowed from cowboy movie action star Buck Jones. Author Philp Francis Nowlan (1888-1940) never wrote another Buck Rogers story after 1929, aside from contributing to the storyline of the comic strip, which ran for 40 years, and spun off a radio series, a 1939 movie serial and two TV series. Condition: Many years ago, brown tape was added to reinforce the spine. It extends 7/8 of an inch onto the cover and by an inch onto the back cover. This magazine measures 8 5/8 x 11 1/8 inches, with the possibility that it was trimmed too closely at the top at the bindery. A one-inch irregular tear appears on the outside edge of the front cover. See photo. A small tear appears on the back cover as well but, other than this, the covers are in good shape with minimal wear and no chipping or other major damage. There is moderate browning of the pages throughout, as can be expected in a pulp of this age, but the paper remains supple and firm. The single sheet containing pages 465-466 has been separated from the binding but remains with the magazine, and a large coupon has been clipped from page 465 (a reader apparently wanted to get a free copy of The Vanguard of Venus, as advertised!). A small 1/4-inch tear occurs on the ouside edge of pages 387 to 392. A pair of parallel diagonal creases occur at the top outside corners of most of the pages, only faintly evident on the front cover. This issue includes pages 385-480 in the Amazing Stories page numbering sequence. NOTE: The cover doesn't depict Buck Rogers, but a scene from The Skylark of Space, the classic novel by E.E. Smith, beginning in the same issue. Magazine. Bookseller Inventory # NWB12-02AMZ828
