Item Description: Farrar and Rinehart, Inc. on Murray Hill, New York, 1933. First edition, no. 85 of 105 copies signed by the author. Syllabus (1932), no. 491 of 1000 copies. Decorations by Allan McNab. 3 vols. 8vo. One of 105 copies Signed by the Author. Celebrated American picaresque novel set during the Napoleonic era, the outstanding best seller of the early 1930s. An edition illustrated by N.C. Wyeth soon followed, and an edition with lithographs by A. E. Wilson was published by the Limited Editions Club in 1937. Allen's novel of the restless Anthony, looking for meaning in a corrupt world, is now largely forgotten and its notoriety eclipsed by other blockbuster of the decade, Gone with the Wind."Anthony Adverse became a mass-market success, revolutionizing the publishing industry (by using modern marketing techniques, including product tie-ins, and by initiating fashion trends), and it demonstrated that such works could combine fine writing, intense reader interest, dynamic sales, and serious, symbolic intent. In a 1934 article he authored for the Saturday Review of Literature, Allen defended the historical novel against a legion of critics who thought the book shallow, plagiarized, and/or pornographic" (ANB). A fine set of the first edition in the limited state, superbly preserved. Merle Johnson pp. 20-21 Original brown suede cloth with red morocco spine labels. Cellotape ghosts on pastedowns, else fine. Syllabus, in original printed wrappers, loosely inserted in vol. I. In cloth chemises and half blue morocco slipcase (repaired and faded) Decorations by Allan McNab. 3 vols. 8vo First edition, no. 85 of 105 copies signed by the author. Syllabus (1932), no. 491 of 1000 copies. Bookseller Inventory # 210806

Item Description: Farrar & Rinehart, New York, 1933. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. A Fine book in a Fine dust wrapper signed by the author in the center of the front free end paper. A 1224-page book whose only flaw is some offsettting to the inner areas of the front pastedown and front free end paper caused by contemporary ephemera laid in, including a 15-page pamphlet written by the author and reprinted from The Saturday Review of Literature(1934) entitled The Sources of Anthony Adverse. The lightly constructed blue boards are in fine, unfaded condition and all gold lettering on the front panel and spine and the front panel border is unblemished and unfaded. The book is first state with "Xavier" for "Zavier" on page 352, "ship" for "shop" on page 1086, line 18 and the word "found" duplicated on page 397, line 22. The mylar-protected dust wrapper's only flaw is the almost negligible light tanning of the spine compared to the tan color of the jacket as a whole and a 3/16" closed tear and related small crease at the top of the spine; otherwise, the wrapper condition is very fine with no other blemishes, remarkable for a book of this age and size. Scarce in this condition, especially signed. Extra postage cost may apply due to weight of book. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 000016

Item Description: Farrar & Rinehart, New York, 1933. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Allan McNab - Decorations (illustrator). 1st Edition. First US edition, first printing, first issue, with the Farrar & Rinehart monogram on the copyright page, and the following uncorrected typos: 1) "Xaxier" for Xavier - p.352, line 6 2) "ship" for shop - p. 1086. line 18 3) the word "found" repeated ("found found" - p.397, line 22. The blue flex binding has parallel gold lines at the margins and the writing (title, author, publisher) is stamped in gold. The book is very good plus: it has some crease lines on the covers (I think this must have been very common with this edition due to the weight of the book), a bit of edgewear and rubbing, and some faint dustiness to the textblock edges, but the covers are bright and clean. The (supplied) dustjacket is from a later printing ("135th Thousand"), and is about good plus, mostly intact with edgewear, creasing, and small chips. The spine has a few pieces of tape on the verso where some tears had occurred and there is some overall toning and darkening. However, it fits the book, and it is contemporary (the book was a best-seller and went quickly into reprints). The price ($3.00) is still present at the upper flap corner. Photos on request! Signed by the author on the front end page - signature only. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 82
