Book Description: Printed for the Author at Mrs. Ashburn's, a China-Shop, the Corner of Fleet-Ditch, 1747. FIRST EDITION. THE ART OF COOKERY MADE PLAIN AND EASY; WHICH FAR EXCEEDS ANY THING OF THE KIND EVER YET PUBLISHED, Printed for the Author at Mrs. Ashburn's, a China-Shop, the Corner of Fleet-Ditch, 1747, first edition, first printing, [16], 65, 68-135, 138-166 pp. a few leaves with some minor stains, a very professional restoration to a small area of the upper margin of the title page, off-setting from the design of the binding to the front and rear end-paper margins, some tanning to the spine, else just about fine in a gorgeous Riviere binding with triple rules to the covers, 6 raised spine compartments, 4 of which are highly decorative while the other 2 contain the author, title, place of publication and date, highly decorated inner dentelles, all edges gold-gilt and with 6 leaves of hand-written recipes bound in at the rear. This most desirable work of the culinary arts went through eight editions in the author's lifetime and was not supplanted as a culinary authority until the work of Mrs. Isabella Beeton appeared in 1861 over a century later. An obvious cornerstone work in the building of a culinary library with a nicer copy being hard to imagine. Bookseller Inventory # NF3630

Book Description: London, 1763. Book Condition: Good. Eighth Edition. Original calf and eps have been laid down on new casing in a sympathetic modern (although not recent) rebinding . First four pages repaired. Pages are browned, with occasional foxing, old ink owner's name on front pastedown, small owner's stamp/sticker on rear pastedown. Otherwise this is a very nice example of this early classic. Hannah Glasse's book, the best-known English cookery book of the 18th century, first appeared in 1747. Immensely popular, it went into many editions. A good deal is now known about Mrs Glasse, who wrote her book from necessity, since her husband seems to have been unable to support her and their large family. Bookseller Inventory # 8515

Book Description: Cottom and Stewart, Alexandria [Virginia], 1812. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Poor. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Rough but complete copy of this hard-to-find work on cooking and food and menu selection, also a scarce pre-Civil War Virginia imprint. Unfortunately this copy does indeed appear to have been through the war, with scorched covers and smoke-darkened outer edges, a few smoke whispers in the margins, but the text complete, readable and barely touched by the smoke darkening. Full calf of the period with gilt spine ruling and old repair to the rear cover, 288, xii pages, endpapers still present but with excess creasing and a few tiny edge chips. Covers are dried and blackened, especially the front cover, with the calf curled back from the underlying composition board which has warped considerably. Text block is somewhat shaken with a few gatherings a little loosened but not detached, contents protruding from the covers at the outer edges, pages generally clean with the aforenoted minor smoke traces in the margins, some darkening to the upper corner of the title page and first page of text, names of Israel Gillett and Susan Morris on front free endpaper along with the name Regent in all caps. Good rebinding candidate but readable as is. Bookseller Inventory # 017867

Book Description: T. Longman, B. Law, J. Johnson, G.G. And J. Robinson, et al., London, 1796. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. (UK) Facsimile signature ("H Glasse") to page 1, no other markings, pages quite clean, book is tight, leather covers are detached from the spine strip, therefore Good only. The covers are original calf which had been protected with a contemporary home-made paper dustcover; there are pieces of sealing wax to the back of the covers where the dustcover was adhered; as well, there are small pieces of the dustcover still adhered to a spot on the front over and on the lower spine. The last page is torn and the bottom portion of page is missing so that three words of the errata are affected. 21 x 13.5 cm, brown calf over boards, [i-iii] iv-xl, [1] 2-419pp [1] errata. The first edition of this cookbook appeared in 1745; this is the 1796 edition with new added material on how to make wine, beer and soap. The pages were photographically reproduced. The first section to page xxix- xl is the Modern Bill of Fare with suggested month menus. This book was well-taken care of but the hinges to these 18th century books are sometimes just weak.
