Light shelfwear, otherwise fine. * A title in The Lawbook Exchange series, Foundations of the Laws of War, General Editor Joseph Perkovich. In this pathbreaking study Polish emigre Raphael Lemkin [1900-1959] coined the term "genocide" and defined it is a subject of international law. While the term has come to mean the extermination of a people, Lemkin used it to describe all programs that sought to increase "Aryan" birthrate while working to exterminate the social, cultural and economic independence of non-Germanic peoples. This study was an elaboration of ideas he first proposed in 1933 in his address to the Fifth International Conference for the Unification of Penal Law (1933), which argued that attacks on racial, religious and ethnic groups should be considered international crimes. Important for the prosecution of the Nazis, it helped to establish the framework for all subsequent efforts to punish crimes against humanity. Bookseller Inventory # 55941

Book Description: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Washington D.C., 1944. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Inscribed in Raphael Lemkin's hand on the half-title page " To Professor and Mrs. Robert J. Cole Devotedly The author Washington, Dec. 3- 1944". The first time I held this volume and read the inscription I nearly cried. Despite Lemkin's dogged perseverance in the creation, passing, and ratifications of the Genocide Convention, his overwhelming personal humility is less commonly known. This volume must have been among the first he signed; Axis Rule was released on Nov. 15, 1944. Guaranteed authentic- We've analyzed it comparatively with another signed volume in our inventory, and there is no doubt it is Lemkin's penmanship. This volume appears to be unread in Very Good condition with tight binding and clean unmarked pages and square edges. Red cloth boards have general shelf wear, darkening, and scuffing. Gold lettering on spine fully intact. An important artifact of human civilization. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 000318

Book Description: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Washington D.C., 1944. Cloth. Book Condition: VG+. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Inscribed "To His Excellency Dr. Ricardo Alfaro with high esteem and gratitude R Lemkin Yale, May 15- 1949" on the free front end paper. Dr. Alfaro was Panama's delegate to the U.N. Conference on International Organization in San Francisco and chairman of the special committee that drafted the Spanish text of the United Nations Charter of 1945. In 1949 Dr. Alfaro was chairman of the legal committee of the third session of the U.N. General Assembly that drew up the text for the Convention on Genocide. The book itself is a tight, unread copy. Six leaves (p.451-462) have a dogeared type fold en mass, measuring 2" vertically from top corner, and 5/8" laterally from corner. Boards are in remarkably good shape- bumped corners, minor shelf wear to hinge ends and corners. Front board bleached looking from decades of rubbing. Spine hinge still supple. Gold lettering on hinge still crisp. An important artifact of human civilization. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 000186
