Item Description: 2012. Hard Cover. 11.75 x 16 in. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Collector Bookstore Quick Notes: Please note this is an oversize "coffee table" sized volume, 11.75 in. x 16 in., 544 pages, weighing 12 lbs! The book consists primarily of large format engravings that originally appeared in newspapers between 1861-1865. Some engravings are full page; others have 2 engravings per page. Each engraving has a caption beneath it which would have appeared in the newspaper, and below that is a detailed explanation of the scene. This is quite an extraordinary volume, I'm not sure the term "book" adequately describes it! For students of the civil war, this is likely to be a treasure trove of information, especially given that the engravings are sufficiently detailed as to show the expressions and facial features of the soldiers, officers and other conflict participants. Publishers Full Description: This oversized facsimile edition of Frank Leslie's nineteenth century Civil War history is richly illustrated with 740 period engravings. The subjects illustrated include portraits of political and military leaders, famous forts, pivotal battles and naval engagements, military encampments, and major events arranged chronologically to follow the course of the war. These images were created by a corps of war artists employed by Frank Leslie for his illustrated newspapers. Years later these prints from 1861 to 1865 were recovered and assembled in this volume. Along with the fascinating illustrations and concise history is a range of official data taken from the nation's war records, including the numbers for troops who entered the Union army by state, the war's principle battles, their generals, and numbers killed and wounded. Indexes to Civil War history and this book's illustrations are included. This book is a historical treasure for all who are fascinated with the Civil War. 740 b/w illustrations. Item Description: Thomas Yoseloff Incorporated, New York, 1956. Hardcover. First Impression. Octavo, [24cm/9 inches], Full chrome-embossed, -[unfaded]-, navy blue cloth sans dust jackets. This is a re-issue of the series of remenescences of admirals, generals, and ratings who fought in the American Civil War and commissioned by Richard Watson Gilder, -editor in Chief of the Century Magazine-, in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century. The Editor, Thomas Yoseloff was one of the first US publishers to open an office in London after the war and in 1959 bought the Golden Cockerel Press. He only issued two books under the imprint, having discovered that the resources and money needed were scant in Britain at the time, but continued to publish in the US and UK under the Associated University Presses imprint and remained an anglophile. Please Feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional snapshots. His journey to publishing was a classic rags to riches story. He was born to Russian Jewish parents in Sioux City, Iowa, and became the breadwinner when money from his father's itinerant work stopped coming in. He eventually won a scholarship to the University of Iowa, where he graduated in journalism, developed a friendship with artist-in-residence Grant Wood and met Gertrude Stein and Thomas Hart Benton. In 1935, he left for New York and as a young journalist wrote for newspapers there, and in Florida, before returning to New York as president of publishers Bernard Ackerman Inc, before setting up his own firm, Beechurst Press in 1939, earning him the nickname of "the boy wonder of publishing". He was later owner and director of AS Barnes and Company, the Sagamore Press, and director of the University of Pennsylvania Press. He was also the co-author of a children's version of The Merry Adventures of Till Eulenspiegel, the editor of a symposium entitled Seven Poets in Search of an Answer (which included the work of Langston Hughes and Joy Davidman, who later married CS Lewis), author of an autobiographical work, The Time of My Life and a biography of Laurence Sterne, entitled Laurence Sterne A Fellow of Infinite Jest. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional snapshots. In exceptionally good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 21201
