Item Description: Tours - Alfred Mame et Fils, 1866. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. A copy of this French Vulgate translation of the bible, beautifully illustrated with plates by Gustave Dor. Traduction Nouvelle. 'Avec les dessins de Gustave Dor'. Both volumes feature illustrated frontispieces. Contains 230 plates. In French. Complete in two volumes. Paul Gustave Dor (January 6 1832 January 23 1883) was a French artist, engraver, illustrator and sculptor. Dor worked primarily with wood engraving and steel engraving. In 1853, he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This commission was followed by additional work for British publishers, including a new illustrated English Bible. In 1856 he produced twelve folio-size illustrations of The Legend of The Wandering Jew for a short poem which Pierre-Jean de Ranger had derived from a novel of Eugne Sue of 1845. In the 1860s he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical 'look' of the two characters. Dor also illustrated an oversized edition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, an endeavor that earned him 30,000 francs from publisher Harper & Brothers in 1883. His later work included illustrations for new editions of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton's Paradise Lost, Tennyson's The Idylls of the King, The Works of Thomas Hood, and The Divine Comedy. Condition: In full morocco bindings. Externally, worn and darkened. A third of the backstrip of volume II is missing. Two hinges failed, one hinge weak and one hinge slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Foxing to the first and last few pages but otherwise generally clean with some scattered light foxing. Overall: FAIR. Bookseller Inventory # 028261

Item Description: Free Press Publishing House, Streator, IL, 1877. Uncommon sole edition of this Freethinker interpretation of the New Testament, focusing on an astrological/astronomical analysis in which Jesus personifies "the annual Sun" and the events of the Gospels overall serve as a representation of the phenomena of the seasons. Wooley uses these "discoveries" to claim that Christianity as a religion is "a fraud of the blackest dye" (p. 51), adding that the working classes (former slaves explicitly included) are duped and oppressed by the capitalists (Northern and Southern) who encourage them to besot themselves with religion, whiskey, and tobacco rather than work towards real, liberating knowledge. The printed Career is followed in this little volume by an extended manuscript section containing neatly written excerpts from Wooley's Science of the Bible or an Analysis of the Hebrew Mythology. 8vo (20.7 cm, 8.2"). Frontis. (incl. in pagination), 52, [2] pp.; [60 (20 blank)] ff. Contemporary half calf over textured cloth, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-ruled raised bands; front cover detached, leather scuffed. All page edges marbled. Upper portion of front free endpaper torn away; two front fly-leaves partially excised. Back free endpaper with pencilled owner's name. Printed portion very slightly age-toned, with faint creasing to first section. Bookseller Inventory # 14441

Item Description: The American Wringer Co., New York, 1892. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1892 Ed. 10 x 12 x 4.5". Leather-bound 15 lb. Bible published by the American Wringer Co. 1891+ (not dated). Front and back boards are sculpted leather and exhibit 12 different impressed, gilded Biblical scenes. Decorated working pewter latches.Elaborate panelled gilt-trimmed spine with 6 raised bands, unblemished gilt on page block edges. 1338 pp plus indexes, Concordances, and Psalms of David in metre. Several multipage sections of art, Steel plate panoramas, four 2-sided colored map plates, 20 colored plates; additional plates were perforated for removal; several remain including a Family Temperance Pledge. Back sections for family photos. Stated on Title page: "This comprehensive and critical history of all the books of the holy Bible contains a concise account of each book, giving the circumstances under which they were written, the names of the writers, the period of time covered and a short synopisis of the prominent events recorded in each book. Compiled expressively for this edition from the writings of William Smith, LL Ed." Other than the temporary plates designed to be removed from the volume, this Bible is in almost perfect condition: the leather is rubbed around the obvious places--top outer edges of top and tail, prominent edges. Curiously, the gilt-decorated 3/8" thick board edges show no rubbing or loss of decoration. Front & back paste downs and eps are intact. Two extra eps in the front designed to cover the hinge construction have lost the glue (a fixable blemish), revealing the intact heavy linen thread used to support the page block and hinges. This book is a masterpiece of binding combining strength and beauty. Additional pictures available on request. Cost of shipping to be computed by weight and destination. 10 x 12 x 4.5".
