Item Description: George Raben, Sigmund Feyrabend [Feierabend or Feyerabend], Weygand Hanen Erben 1564-5, 1569, Frankfurt am Mayn [Main], 1564. Calf. First Edition. A mid-sixteenth century Luther bible containing 137 woodcuts Swiss artist Jost Amman, including four full page, all hand-colored. Folio, 33 by 23 cm. (11 lbs.) Collation: )(3-8, a3-6, b1-7, A2-3, A5-6, B1-3, B5-6, C-E6, F1-5, G-Z6, a-z6, aa-ff6, 4 blank leaves, A-Z6, a-n6, o2-6, p-z6, aa-qq6, A-Q6, R8, S-V6, X8. Lacking [*]1-2)(1-2, b8, A1, A4, B4, F6, o1 (NT title). To simplify this collation, preliminaries are unpaginated, then leaves numbered, 317, 370, 129 unpaginated leaves. The missing leaves are the general title, four prelim or prefatory leaves, three from Genesis: numbers 1, 4, 10, one from Exodus: 36, and the New Testament Title. Numerous closed tears, a few large, scattered through the bible, with only two woodcuts touched, but suffering no loss of imagery. These two are in Revelations, which was clearly thumbed through more frequently. Generally the woodcuts are unscathed, and the color remains vibrant. A few other leaves with marginal note losses, and a few instances of paper repair in the margins (but no facsimilization of margin text loss). One leaf, 193 (OT) with corner chunk loss. Dampstaining in bottom and inner margins of most pages. As with chipping and loss, the soiling is heaviest in the early leaves. The core is generally free of heavy blemishing. Calf, probably at least eighteenth century, heavily worn, dry and scuffed, and spine strip is gone. First and last half dozen leaves chipped and heavily worn along edges, with some loss of text. A few other leaves with marginal note losses, and a few instances of paper repair in the margins (but no facsimilization of margin text loss). Bookseller Inventory # 003264

Item Description: American Publishing Co., 1876. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 8vo., pp. [ff 1] + [3]-892 + [2]-276; publisher's brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind; mildew to fore-edge of rear board and a small portion of cloth turn-ins at rear pastedown; minor bit of mousing across part of the bottom fore-edge of text block; pale yellow endpapers; still a surprisingly attractive, bright and unsophisticated copy. First and only edition, translated by Julia E. Smith (1793-1886). According to Simms (1936), Julia Smith of Glastonbury, Connecticut was the "only woman in the world's history to translate the entire Bible into any language" and at her own expense. She was born into a family that belonged to an obscure Scottish sect of Christianity, which sought as an ideal the restoration of the apostolic church. Her very literal translation of the Bible emphasizes concern for historically accurate meaning -- even at the cost of an "unnatural English." The order of books follows the Palestinian Jewish canon, placing Chronicles at the end of the Old Testament. Besides her work as a translator, Julia Smith also became a leading voice in the woman's suffrage movement. Uncommon. See Simms, The Bible in America, pp. 149-150; Herbert (from Darlow & Moule) 2002. Item Description: N.d., circa 1860s. The sketches are all 10 to 11 cm tall and about 6 cm wide. They would appear to have been done together as a single project, and what is depicted is noted in each of the illustrations: from Genesis, Abraham's offer of his son as a sacrifice; from Numbers, when Moses makes a serpent of brass; from Daniel, when he is in the lion's den; from Samuel, David slaying a Geshurite; and finally, two scenes depicting Jesus from Matthew. The drawings are on separate pieces of paper, with the scenes framed by a ruled line. Presently these are mounted onto a heavier card. Bookseller Inventory # 003782

Item Description: R. Cruttwell, 1785. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. Bath, 1785. Quarto, three volumes, contemporary calf. A scarce early quarto bible in English. "Dr. Thomas Wilson (1663-1775), Bishop of Sodor and Man, was responsible for the publicatin of some of the earliest books in Manx, including the Gospel of St. Mattew printed in 1748. The notes in this edition of the Bible are apparently taken from Wilson's 'Abstract of the Historical Part of the New Testament' (1785) and other writings. C. Cruttwell (1743-1808 edited Wilson's complete works under the direction of the bishop's son, Thomas." - Darlowe and Moule 937. A good plus to very good minus set in original calf with excellent, complete contents. A few leaves in the second volume are bound slightly out of order. Hinges chipped and weakened but still holding, chips to calf at spines. Now protected in heavy mylar. Seminary bookplates to pastedowns and a few stray pencil marks to prelims. Contents are excellent, free of foxing. Darlowe and Moule 937, OCLC 6804328. Bookseller Inventory # SP341

Item Description: Julius Gilman, Hartford, 1827. Full Calf. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. 178 pp, each measuring 2 by 1.5 inches, 52 by 40 mm, with 11 woodcut plates. With bookplate of Cornelius J. Hauck Collection, thus providing a distinguished provenance. This collection was formed between 1945 and 1965 to document the history of the book. The private collection was put together under the guidance of the highly regarded bookseller Emil Offenbacher. The collection was given to the Cincinnati Historical Society, which became the Cincinnati Museum Center, and it was deaccessed in 2006 by auction at Christie's (where it sold for $960). Hauck's family fortune was made in brewing and then investments, and the Haucks are among the most prominent of Cincinnati families. Some wear to the binding, but overall it remains uncommonly bright and well-preserved. Minor soilage of leaves, which also overall clean. A tight and handsome copy. Bookseller Inventory # 001350
