The covers have rubbed and worn edges, and the corners are also worn, with the underlying cardboard showing. Has one frontpaper and two endpapers. The top blank 1/2 inch of the title page has been removed, containing an owner's name. An inked date of 1848 remains. 354 very clean, still crisp, and tightly bound pages, with very little foxing. A clean, unmarked and firmly bound copy. Pages and tissue-protected lithographs are very clean and unblemished. Bound in a plain black leather hardcover - no titling on cover. Spine has 5 raised hubs serving their traditional function, covering heavy binding cords. Cover is clean though edges, hinges and hubs are all rubbed, with board showing in spots. Leather along hinges is cracked. Leather at top front corner abraded. Marbled endpapers are clean and intact. Despite cracked outer hinges, binding is very sturdy. Internal hinges were built to last - with reinforcement and sturdy binding cords. The story of the writing of the Declaration of Independence with biographies of the men who signed. Wonderfully illustrated with a series of portraits of the signers, photos of significant landmarks and artifacts (such as the Liberty Bell and the folding desk on which Jefferson wrote the Declaration) and several facsimile reproductions. Illustrations are full-page plates, each with a captioned tissue, excepting a foldout illustration of the Declaration "as it looks now." Index included. 7 x 10-3/4"; viii + 99 text pages plus plates.
