First Edition, Second Issue, with frontis portrait of General George Custer and ouline map of Montana and Dakota. (Howes, 980, p. 146).Brown cloth with lovely gilt and black design to front board, including Sunrise, (Sun's rays ruled in gilt which then wrap around entire spine and back, ruled in blind), and gilt Bugle with black musical score. Just a bit of rubbing to extremities, and a very light bump to bottom rear corner. Tight binding. No markings. Sharp copy. These are Libby's recollections of life on the front with her family - marching, winter's journey through blizzards, Carrying The Mail, particularities of domestic life, "Indian Depredations", General Custer's Library, The Capture and Escape of the Indian Rain-In-The-Face, Curious Characters and Excursionists, and more. Included are little known details about General Custer's love for pets -- a badger, porcupine, raccoon, prairie-dog, and wild-turkey, and wildcat "had all served their bheir brief time as members of our family". At one time the general tamed a tiny field mouse, and kept it in a large empty inkstand on his desk. It grew very fond of him, and ran over his head and shoulders, and even through his hair." The appendices at the rear of the book, numbering 41 pp total, include:1) "Extracts of Letters Written by General Custer to his wife During the Expedition to The Yellowstone in 1873"; 2) "Official Report of the Engagements with The Indians on the 4th and 11th, ultimo";3) "Letters from The Black Hills, 1874"; (and)4) "Letters from The Yellowstone, 1876". Harper, N.Y. 1885, first edition, second state, 312 pages, 12mo, brown cover with portrait frontis. and map not in the first state. Elaborate cover design with black hills and gilt rays of sunshine rising above the hills, and with gilt trumpet and musical notes of the cavelry charge in the upper corner. The title in gilt and the author's name in gilt on the cover are also bright. The spine lettering and decorations are intact but somewhat dull. Mrs. Custer tells much about her husband's life and activities leading to his death at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. There is wear on the upper and lower spine edges and on the lower corners. There are no marks or inscriptions and the contents are tight and clean with new claycote endpapers. Overall, considering its age, a Very Good Plus copy of a classic work. $250.00.
