Book Description: Random House, New York, 1958. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine-. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First Printing (so stated). 8vo: [8],179,[1]pp. Publisher's canary yellow cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gold on a black field, top edge stained gray; in the tangerine first issue (with $3.50 and 10/58 on the front flap) Ismar David dust jacket. An exceptional example, with virtually none of the usual fading to the jacket spine. Just about Fine (minor loss of black to the spine, which is lightly creased; usual offsetting to the end papers), in a jacket that presents as Fine after very minor restoration to the spine tips. Besides the title novella, filmed by Blake Edwards with Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, collected are "House of Flowers," "A Diamond Guitar," and "A Christmas Memory." Practically on publication, Holly Golightly became a literary icon—"expressing that essential sense of freedom and openness to life that Capote so dearly valued." In many of his stories and early novels, and especially in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Capote engages the subject of travel, "epitomized, now, in his most legendary fictional heroine, who resembles no one more than Capote himself, and who, as the name on her calling card suggests ("Miss Holiday Golightly . . . Traveling"), transforms life into an everyday holiday." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Includes three of Capote's best-known stories, "House of Flowers," "A Diamond Guitar," and "A Christmas Memory," in addition to his bestselling novella, "Breakfast at Tiffany's," the popular story of Holly Golightly. The novella's prose style prompted Norman Mailer to call Capote "the most perfect writer of my generation," adding that he "would not have changed two words in Breakfast at Tiffany's". The heroine of Breakfast at Tiffany's, Holly Golightly, became one of Capote's best-known creations and a cultural icon. Capote acknowledged she was the favorite of his characters. Capote weaves a tale of a year-long friendship, from autumn of 1943 to '44, between Holiday Golightly and the story's narrator. The two are both tenants in a brownstone on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Holiday Golightly is a country girl turned café society girl who makes her living coaxing dollars from rich, older gentlemen; and, the narrator is an aspiring writer. Holly, who likes to stun people with carefully selected bits from her personal life and her outspoken opinions, slowly reveals herself to the narrator who finds himself fascinated. Ultimately, Holly fears she will never know what is really hers until she discards it. Truman Capote based Holly's character on several women including Gloria Vanderbilt, Oona Chaplin, and Walter Matthau's wife, Carol Grace. There are also many similarities between Holly and his mother, Nina Capote. Both were from the rural south with similar birth names they changed - Holly Golightly's character was born Lula Mae Barnes in Texas, and Nina Capote was born Lillie Mae Faulk in Alabama. Additionally, both left husbands they married as teenagers, abandoned close relatives making their way to New York, and they both achieved Cafe Society status through relations w/wealthier men. Manufactured in the United States of America by The Haddon Craftsman. 179 pages. Insured post. Signed by Author(s). Book. Bookseller Inventory # 016571
