Item Description: TheClassics.us. Paperback. Book Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. 64 pages. Dimensions: 9.7in. x 7.4in. x 0.1in.This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: . . . represented. Scarcely a member of any of their households would consent to remain at home. Though divided into several small parties, they really constituted a group by themselves. The fearful strain of anxiety was plainly visible in their countenances, and even strangers from a distance mingling ampng the Camerton people had no difficulty in picking them out of the throng. Some of them moaned aloud under the burden of their affliction. It seemed as if the suspense must kill them if it continued much longer. The work at the face was going forward with the same persistent energy as before. Shift followed shift during the early part of the night, just as for a week past; but each successive set of men retired with a feeling of disappointment, because, after the turn of the day, each shift had indulged the hope that it might be their privilege to finish the work and be the first to set eyes on the lost men. A few minutes before eleven oclock that night, what proved to be the last shift went on, with a clean breast before them. While engaged in undermining (cutting a narrow channel horizontally under the main body of the coal), one of. the men suddenly cried out: Hush! Every tool was dropped in a moment. Mike McClenahan had struck his pick through into vacancy! A few more lightning-like strokes, and he had opened up a hole several inches in diameter. Hulloa there! cried Mike. Hulloa! was the feeble response. Whos in there There s six of us. Who are you thats talkin I cant make ye out. James Shryock. Good! Who else is with ye My butty; Thomas Tangey, Archie Atkins, Sam Smallwood, and the two Poles. These latter were foreigners, with long, un-HUSH! pronounceable names, and were always designated as the two. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9781230259031

Item Description: Kingsmead Press, Kingsmead Square, Bath, 1971. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Revised Edition. First impression of the revised & enlarged edition, with additional material. The original edition was published in 1930. ***Edited by Howard and Peter Coombs. 9-page introduction by Virginia Woolf.***Fifteen black and white illustrations including frontispiece portrait of Rev. John Skinner [loose but present]. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine and publisher's gilt decorative device to front board. Map illustrated front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. (The map of the Area South of Bath is taken from the 1st edition Ordnance Survey, 1817). Owner's two printed address labels "Rev. D. Griffiths" to top of front free endpaper. Spine tight. Pages clean. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of £4.50. Edges of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. Tiny nick and crease to lower edge of front panel of dustwrapper near bottom outer corner. Red titles to spine slightly faded. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, rubbed and nicked. Front and rear panels of dustwrapper bright. *** 520 pages including index to rear.***'Fate had taken Skinner from the lawyer's office, where he would have been in his element, dealing out justice, filling up forms, keeping strictly to the letter of the law, and had planted him at Camerton among the churchwardens and farmers, the Gullicks and the Padfields, the old woman who had dropsy, the idiot boy, and the dwarf. Irritable, nervous, apprehensive, he seems to embody, even before the age itself had come into existence, all the strife and unrest of our distracted times. Behind him lay order and discipline and all the virtues of the heroic past, but directly he left his study he was faced with drunkenness and immorality; with indiscipline and irreligion; with Methodism and Roman Catholicism; with the Reform Bill and the Catholic Emancipation Act, with a mob clamouring for freedom, with the overthrow of all that was decent and established and right. Tormented and querulous, at the same time conscientious and able, he stands at the parting of the ways, unwilling to yield an inch, unable to concede a point, harsh, peremptory, apprehensive, and without hope. ***Even his children turned away from him; there was nothing left to live for. Yet what had he done to make everyone hate him? Why did the villagers tie cans to the tail of his dog? Why did the peacocks shriek and the bells ring? Why was there no mercy shown to him and no respect and no love? With agonising repetition the diary asks these questions; but there is no answer. At last, one morning in October 1839, the Rector took his gun, walked into the beech wood near his home, and shot himself dead.' ***'The Journal of a Somerset Rector was published by John Murray in 1930, and dealt with the years 1822-32. At the time, the subject seemed to be exhausted, but in 1933 the British Museum purchased from a London bookseller a further twenty-five volumes of the Rev. John Skinner's MSS, One of these proved to be of unusual interest: it was entitled "The Liber Niger of Camerton" and presents a unique, if unedifying picture of life in a mining village in Somerset in the early part of the last century. This new publication, adding the twenty years from 1803-22, includes the Black Book, certain passages from the story of Skinner's earlier years which could not find a place in the first volume, and some important additions rom the years 1832-4 continuing the Journal which ended so abruptly in the middle of sentence in November 1832. The illustrations include several taken from water-colour sketches by Skinner himself.' (Quote from inside front and rear jacket blurb). ***Uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
