First Edition
Leather. Condition: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of George Glas' work regarding the history of the Canary Islands, complete with four maps, one of which is folding and bound in modern morocco. The first edition of the work. Quarto. ESTC Citation No. T36478. With four maps, one folding and two on one leaf. Endpapers and blanks renewed collated complete. The History of the Discovery and Conquest of the Canary Islands is divided into three parts, with the first being a translation of a manuscript by an Andalusian monk called Juan Abreu de Galindo which had been discovered in Palma. The second section acts as an ethnographical account of the indigenous people of the island and the third a description of the archipelago. Written by George Glas, a Scottish Seaman and merchant, who commanded a ship which traded between Brazil, the northwest coast of Africa and the Canary Islands. Glas and his family were murdered whilst on a ship heading to England, with many speculating that Robert Louis Stevenson based elements of his novel Treasure Island on the murder of the Glas family. In modern half morocco with cloth covered boards. Externally in excellent condition. Endpapers and blanks renewed. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with age toning and the odd spot. Library stamps for Brooklyn Public Library to maps, title page and final leaf. Tape repair to final text leaf. Minor chipping to extremities of the map of The Canary Islands and the occasional leaf. Very Good Indeed. book.
