Hardcover. Condition: Fine-. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Simon and Schuster, Inc., New York, New York, U.S.A., 1965. "First Printing" (stated) of First (1st) Edition. Fine- Condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight, and square, with green topstain, deckled fore-edges, and no markings of any kind other than a prior owner's date-stamp on the front free endpaper. The Binding is green quarter cloth to aquamarine boards with a line drawing outline of a castle on the front board, gilt title, etc., to spine, all corners square, and mild sunning to the top edge of the front board. No Dust Jacket. See photos. 382 + i pages. 5 5/8" x 8 1/4". This surrealistic war novel (perhaps the only surrealistic World War 2 novel), set in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge (in which the author participated and was wounded), was apparently the first novel to use the normal language of soldiers in the field. Each chapter is narrated in the first person by a different character in the story. A personal favorite of mine and a hard to find book. In 1969, it was made into an equally surrealistic film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Burt Lancaster, Peter Falk, Bruce Dern, Patrick O'Neal, and Jean-Pierre Aumont.
