[Children's reading book] FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with all points present. Quarto (23 x 17cm), pp.62. Illustrated throughout. Bound in publisher's pictorial blue boards, in illustrated dust-jacket repeating the cover design. Contents clean, page edges toned, jacket is edgeworn, one-inch chip to foot of spine, rubbed and creased. An inexpensive copy of the true first. Hirsch and Younger [7].
Condition: Very good in very good jacket. First edition, first state of this subversive update to DICK AND JANE, based upon the idea that kids would get more excited about reading if they enjoyed the material. Challenged to create a reader for young children using only 220 different words, Seuss tricked kids into enjoying learning with his destructive and charismatic house guest. Inspired in part by Krazy Kat and Felix the Cat, but with a wily mind all his own, the Cat in the Hat's humor and naughtiness are engaged in the noble cause of literacy. "Parents," notes biographer Brian Jay Jones, "were more than happy to join Dr. Seuss as fellow revolutionaries. Even if parents didn't necessarily understand the pedagogy, it was easy to see the difference between the staid DICK AND JANE and the rambunctious CAT IN THE HAT: kids wanted to read about the antics of the cat, just as Geisel had hoped." The first book featuring the US literary icon. 9'' x 6.5''. Original flat paper over boards (not glazed paper). In original unclipped (200/200) dust jacket. 61, [1] pages. Light wear and toning to edges of boards. Jacket with moderate creasing, a couple closed tears, and a bit of soil to rear panel.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing, 1957 , NY. First state book in the original flat paper over boards . Spine extremities and tips a bit worn otherwise very good+ in dust jacket. In order of appearance this is the first state of the book issued in the second state of the dust jacket. The original price of the book has been the cause of some confusion in the past. Originally the book was published in flat paper boards. The price on the dust jacket was ( $ 2.00 ). When Random House decided to issue a set of books titled The Beginner Reader Series they agreed to price ALL the forthcoming books at ( $ 1.95 ). Which was quite ODD because the book price actually went down as time went by. BUT in the interim the Publisher bound up whatever remaining copies of the FIRST ISSUE of the Cat in The Hat book and issued it with a dust jacket that had no price at all. Agreed by researchers today that this is the Second state dust jacket and quite scarce. Precedes the ( $ 1.95 ) issues. It is agreed that All copies bound in flat paper boards are first states of the book , ALL 3 states of the jacket are noted here. A fun time in research and now clear to most. The copy offered here is the FIRST state book in the Second State ( unpriced ) dust jacket. Overall a very good or better jacket and book.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, First Edition, First Printing (with all points), Original Dust Jacket (price-clipped), Random House, 1957, 61 pp, 9.25 x 6.75". In good condition. Dust jacket is beautifully preserved with bright and clean colors & very minimal scuffing to edges/corners. DJ is price-clipped, however. Edges of boards are lightly scuffed & edges worn. Head and tail of spine bumped. All points are met for a first edition: (1) boards are a matte finish, not glossy; (2) pages are sown in a single signature instead of multiple - see photo #4; (3) Reviews on rear cover do not mention Beginner's Book series; and (4) dust jacket was previously covered with a black-edged jacket protector, which has left marks on the binding and the end-papers as well as causing a small paper pull on the rear end-page - see photos #s 19 & 20. Light toning throughout text-block. Some instances of finger-soiling along fore-edge. No known previous ownership signature or marginalia. Binding tight and intact. Please see photo and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. A beloved childhood classic, with an original dust jacket in excellent condition. It is rare to see the dust jacket of a children's book to be this clean and intact, especially The Cat in the Hat. Although scuff marks usually decrease value, the scuff marks present in this edition help to identify this is a true first edition. Presents very well, gift worthy.
