Item Description: New York: Random House, 1957. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. Seuss, Dr. (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by Seuss. First edition, first printing. Publisher's matte blue pictorial boards, with an illustration to the front board of the Cat in the Hat, pictorial endpapers illustrated with images of the Cat in the Hat; in the original first issue dust jacket, illustrated and lettered to match the binding, with the price "200/200" to the front flap. Near fine, with some minor rubbing to the extremities, former owner's inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper, otherwise fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, minor chips to the spine ends, light rubbing to the rear hinge, some creasing to the panels, a hint of light soiling to the rear panel, else bright and fresh. Overall, a very good and attractive copy. The Cat in the Hat is a short children's book Theodore Geisel published under the pseudonym Dr. Seuss that tells the story of a young boy and girl whose quiet rainy day at home is disrupted by the arrival of the mischievous Cat in the Hat. A significant text in the history of children's literature, The Cat in the Hat is both the book that brought Geisel literary fame and revolutionized the way children learned to read. It was published in response to a perceived literary crisis and was supposed to inspire a love for reading in young students that was not facilitated by the traditional Dick and Jane readers; as the dust jacket explains, The Cat in the Hat opens "the door to the wondrous discovery that reading can be fun!" To achieve this goal, Geisel created the story from only 223 words that were considered within the reading ability of the average first grade student in the United States based on the phonetic skills and vocabulary required of the national first grade primer. Interestingly, Houghton Mifflin proposed the idea of using a set number of words on the first grade primer to create a text geared towards students, but Seuss had a pre-established contract with Random House. Accordingly, Random House published this first trade edition while Houghton Mifflin retained the right for school publications. Bookseller Inventory # DS005

Item Description: Random House, 1957. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This first edition classic boasts the 195/195 pricing which most argue qualify it as a later printing of the first edition. Your research will tell you that there are many considerations related to determining a "true" first edition of this book. However, the markers of this particular book that is for sale are consistent with the broader definition of first edition that take into account the lowered price from the original $2.00 price. This book was very gently used and comes from my own childhood library. Binding still square. Corners of book (and dust jacket) show some wear. Binding edges of dust jacket also show wear. Top right corner of front dust jacket has a slight break at the edge at a weakened wear point, but no subsequent rip or tear. Overall great condition and a great find priced to sell. Item Description: Random House, New York, N.Y., 1957. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First State of the First Edition. The Book is in Very Good condition: the boards are bright and unworn. The front board features Seuss's iconic "Cat in the Hat" illustration. The board edges show just slight wear; the lower corners are lightly bumped. The 62 pages are clean and unmarked. Pages 1,3,5,7,9, and 11 show very light creasing. The dust jacket, in a mylar protector, is in Good condition: the covers are bright and whole, showing light wrinkling and short closed tears at the edges. There is light chipping at the corners and spine tips; a 0.5 inch chip at the spine bottom takes out the "e" in "Random House". This copy of "The Cat in the Hat" is the first state of the first edition. The points are as follows: (1) The price code "200/200" is shown at the top right corner of the front dust jacket flap, (2) the 63 pages are bound in one signature using matte boards (later printings used three signatures and glossy boards), (3) the back dust jacket flap blurb does *not* end with the phrase "Printed in U.S.A." as is seen on the otherwise identical 1985 facsimile edition, and (4) on the front cover, the blurb 'For Beginning Readers'" is inscribed in a circle at a 45 degree backward sloping angle. This copy has a signature "- Dr. Seuss" at the bottom left edge of the blank page opposite the title page (see photo), but as we cannot authenticate it, this copy is being sold as an unsigned first edition. We will not remove the signature in case the signature can be authenticated. Seuss (a pseudonym adopted by Theodor Seuss Geisel) was a transformative figure in American children's literature. Geisel had been writing children's books since 1950, but after Life magazine published an article in 1954 asserting that "children were not learning to read because their books were boring", William Ellsworth Spaulding, the director of the education division at Houghton Mifflin who later became its chairman, challenged Geisel to "bring back a book children can't put down". Nine months later, Geisel completed The Cat in the Hat, using 236 of the 348 basic word list that Spaulding gave him. It retained the drawing style, verse rhythms, and all the imaginative power of Geisel's earlier works, but because of its simplified vocabulary, it could be read by beginning readers. The Cat in the Hat and subsequent books written for young children achieved significant international success and they remain very popular today Geisel went on to write many other children's books, both in his new simplified-vocabulary manner and in his older, more elaborate style, in his own division of Random House (Beginner Books). Thia is a very presentable first edition, first state copy of Theodore Geisel's seminal Early Reader. Many more pictures of this book avaiable on request. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Trade. Item Description: Random House, New York, NY, 1957. Hard Cover/Stitched. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Dr. Seuss (Author-Illustrator) (illustrator). First Edition. Text/Bright, clean, sound As New w/short closed tear by spine (short of stitching) to rear endpaper. Glazed illustrated boards/NF w/trace rubs to corner tips & upper/lower spine edges. First Edition, 3rd variant printing --- glazed boards accompanied by dust jacket with 195/195 on front inner flap, denoting final choice of boards and pricing. 200/200 on the inner flaps is a record of intitial marketing choice of regular paper covered boards at $2.00; the book was issued again w/paper covered boards without any numbers on the inner flap reflecting publisher's uncertainty over price and board treatment. This 3rd variant, identified by 195/195, records zeroing in on the price of $1.95 and committment to the more durable glazed boards better suited for little hands and fingers, paginated pages, and established the standard format for subsequent Cat in the Hat Beginner Reader Series. Art work remains constant. In essence, this 3rd Variant Edition is the definitive printing. This tall, skinny cat, sporting a signature red bow tie and red-and-white striped top hat, created and made famous both through verse and illustrations of Dr. Seuss (1904 - 1991), is friend to most American school children, and a real sense, spearheaded early reader books puntuated with wit and humor, and word play. The charming, action packed tale is told with 220 different words, all vocabulary recognizable by first and secondgraders.
