From the introduction to First Editions of Dr. Seuss Books: A Guide to Identification by Helen and Marc Younger and Dan Hirsch- The Cat in the Hat brought the basic concepts of reading to tens and thousands of children who were learning to read without being taught. The challenge of writing an entire book using only 220 different words and making the book enjoyable was enormous. It was a marked departure from the traditional Dick and Jane type readers. Teachers found that it especially motivated inner-city students and slower readers.". Bookseller Inventory # 38623

Book Description: Random House, 1957. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing. While clearly loved, this copy remains well-kept. The pages show a little gentle spotting at the first five leaves, prior owners' names penned neatly at the front free endpaper, and two more faint spots at the last two pages, but are otherwise clean and surprisingly bright; the entirety of the page block was bound as a single sewn signature in paper (not glossy) pictorial boards (with no number printed at the lower spine); the boards now show rub-through at the lower corners and spine heel, gentler rubbing at head and heel edges and spine head, a short, closed tear in the lower joint, and just a little faint age-toning at head and heel, otherwise quite clean and bright. The dust jacket is, unfortunately, priceclipped but has a description at the front flap describing the anticipated success of the book and its raison d'etre (the rear flap has a picture and biography of the author, and no publish/print location); the chalkboard depicted at the rear says only "Educators hail The CAT in the HAT*" and gives four reviews, a miniature repeat of the front cover, a publisher's address in New York 22, N.Y., and no mention whatever of the Beginner Books to come. The jacket shows a short, closed tear with accompanying creases at the lower rear, a very short crease and tear at the upper rear, short, partially open tears with creasing at the spine head and heel, modest surface creasing at the spine and foreedges, rubbing and a little chipping at corners and spine tips, a little toning and surface soil evident in the white areas of the rear panel, three tiny scratches at the lower front, and a little faint pencil ghosting inside the letters of the title at front where a child traced them - an oddly charming touch, considering the fact that this book, upon its hope-filled first printing, was to change our very concept of child literacy education in the United States. The jacket is now protected in a clear, removable, archivally safe sleeve, and the book now resides in a climate-controlled room. Bookseller Inventory # 038879

Book Description: Random House, New York, NY, 1957. Hard Cover/Stitched. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Dr. Seuss (Author-Illustrator) (illustrator). First Edition. Text/Bright, clean, sound As New w/short closed tear by spine (short of stitching) to rear endpaper. Glazed illustrated boards/NF w/trace rubs to corner tips & upper/lower spine edges. First Edition, 3rd variant printing --- glazed boards accompanied by dust jacket with 195/195 on front inner flap, denoting final choice of boards and pricing. 200/200 on the inner flaps is a record of intitial marketing choice of regular paper covered boards at $2.00; the book was issued again w/paper covered boards without any numbers on the inner flap reflecting publisher's uncertainty over price and board treatment. This 3rd variant, identified by 195/195, records zeroing in on the price of $1.95 and committment to the more durable glazed boards better suited for little hands and fingers, paginated pages, and established the standard format for subsequent Cat in the Hat Beginner Reader Series. Art work remains constant. In essence, this 3rd Variant Edition is the definitive printing. This tall, skinny cat, sporting a signature red bow tie and red-and-white striped top hat, created and made famous both through verse and illustrations of Dr. Seuss (1904 - 1991), is friend to most American school children, and a real sense, spearheaded early reader books puntuated with wit and humor, and word play. The charming, action packed tale is told with 220 different words, all vocabulary recognizable by first and secondgraders. A cool cat that will reappear in subsequent rhymed stories by Seuss and become an emblem of a series of Beginner Books it spawned. Fine copy. Bookseller Inventory # 005898
