First edition. First issue, with 'First edition, I-B' on verso title page as required. Original publisher's pictorial cloth in (supplied) dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed to friend and fellow novelist, Elizabeth Taylor on the front end paper, "For Elizabeth Taylor / and I do like Irish whiskey / E B White". A very good copy, with some toning to the spine and a little wear to the spine ends and slight looseness to the initial pages. The dustwrapper is near fine, clean and bright with trivial wear and a thin chip to one corner. Colour dustwrapper by Garth Williams and numerous line drawings in the text also by Williams. Elizabeth Taylor, the critically regarded British novelist, described by Kingsley Amis as "One of the best English novelists born this century", whose writing career was forced into relative obscurity as a consequence of coinciding with the rise of her more famous namesake, the American actress. Her style was in the mould of Ivy Compton-Burnett, Barbara Pym and Elizabeth Bowen, and has only recently been recognised as one of the most important authors of the twentieth century. She wrote twelve novels and many short stories, most of which were originally published in The New Yorker, where E.B. White's wife, Katherine, was her first editor. Taylor rarely travelled to America so did not often meet White, but they became good friends via a long and frequent correspondence. Charlotte's Web was one of Taylor's favourite books and was a story she read aloud to her grandchildren. E.B.White was known to be a great fan of whiskey, often having a bottle to hand to offer guests and storing all his manuscripts in old whiskey boxes. Presentation copies of Charlotte's Web of significant literary association are genuinely rare.

Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Illustrated by Garth Williams. Original publisher's light tan cloth, lettered in blue and black, pictorial blue endpapers with a cobweb illustration in white; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with Garth's illustration of Fern holding Wilbur and looking at Charlotte to the front panel, lettered in black, blue, red and green. Fine book, with just a touch of rubbing to bottom corners; near fine unclipped dust jacket, with light toning to spine and upper margin of front panel, some very light surface marks to spine and front panel, a touch of soiling to panels, and two tiny chips to front flap fold. Overall, an exemplary copy of E. B. White's classic book. Charlotte's Web tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and how the farmer's daughter Fern and his spider friend Charlotte endeavor to save Wilbur from slaughter. Just as White's Stuart Little, the story of a mouse in a big city, appealed to urban American children, Charlotte's Web was geared towards rural children who grew up living on a farm. The text is illustrated with forty-seven black and white drawings by Garth Williams, who also illustrated Stuart Little. In both, the artist's cross-hatching illustrations portrayed a jovial subject matter beloved by children with a level of detail that simultaneously garnered adult admirers. White drew his inspiration for Charlotte's Web from his own experience tending to a sick pig, which he outlined in a 1947 essay for The Atlantic Monthly.

In a very good unclipped wrapper with some browning to the spine. A little chipping to the spine tips and some rubbing and creasing to the edges. Neat closed tear to the head of the front panel. "Charlotte's Web earned critical acclaim upon its releaseâ "Eudora Welty notably called it "just about perfect"â "and it quickly became a beloved children's classic. While humorous and charming, the novel also contains important lessons. For example, Fern's caring for Wilbur teaches her responsibility, and she realizes that if she stands up for what she believes in she can make a difference in the world. Charlotte and Wilbur's friendship, despite their differences in nature, teaches tolerance. As he grows up, like any child, Wilbur learns to cope with fear, loss, mortality, and loneliness. Although a story of life and death, it is also full of warmth, with silly characters such as the geese and the snobby sheep. In addition, Charlotte's Web contains a wealth of detail about spiders and other animals, which White drew from his own life on a farm. Wilbur was allegedly inspired by an ailing pig that White tried unsuccessfully to nurse back to health. The incident served as the basis for the essay 'Death of a Pig,' which was published in 1948, four years before the release of Charlotte's Web." (Britannica). HBS 68886. $1,000.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Garth Williams (illustrator). First Edition. Charlotte's Web is a children's novel by American author E. B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams; it was published in October 15, 1952, by Harper & Brothers. The novel tells the story of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur (such as "Some Pig") in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live. Written in White's dry, low-key manner, Charlotte's Web is considered a classic of children's literature, enjoyable to adults as well as children. The description of the experience of swinging on a rope swing at the farm is an often cited example of rhythm in writing, as the pace of the sentences reflects the motion of the swing. In 2000, Publishers Weekly listed the book as the best-selling children's paperback of all time.1952 stated first edition with correct I-B code on copyright page.
