Philidor was both a musical prodigy and a chess prodigy, generally regarded as the greatest chess player of his age. In 1749, Philidor first published this, his most famous book Analyse du jeu des Echecs [Chess Analysed]. There is some discreet and archival repair to the joints and the head of the spine; general wear to the extremities but all in all quite handsome; previous owner bookplate on the front pastedown; William F. Wickham's signature on the title page; Wickham, of Hickory Hill, Hanover County Virginia, was the father of General William C. Wickham of the Confederate army. General Lee was to write of Wickham after the war: "I am so glad now that I stopped at Hickory Hill on my return to Lexington. It has given me pleasant thoughts for the rest of my life, and the last look at one the like of whom I shall never see again." All 18th century editions are scarce. near Very Good binding.
