Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Original black cloth, lettered in white. Housed in publisher's slipcase. Some light soiling to front and back of slipcase. Overall, a very nice copy. Book is inscribed by the photographer: "To Miss Grace Meyer. This is the step to New York-New York. Yas Ishimoto." A rare book inscribed (this copy to Grace Meyer, former head of MOMA).
Condition: As New. First edition. First edition of Ishimoto's survey of 1960s urban life in Chicago, with over 200 black-and-white photographic images. "At a time when most of the leading Japanese photographers were actively caught up in their country's volatile political situation, Ishimoto seems deliberately to have maintained his distance, declaring his independence with a body of work that was different in both style and approach?Chicago, Chicago confirms this singularity and the promise shown in his earlier Aruhi Arutokoro. The later book demonstrates a photographer influenced by both Japanese and American sources and adopting neither wholeheartedly? It is arguably more completely realized, thematically tighter than Aruhi Arutokoro? Its old-fashioned, humanist virtues are considerable. Like the earlier work, the book is split into sections, seven of them this time, revealing various aspects of Chicago and two major photographic preoccupations of Ishimoto at the time-the formal urban landscape and the street portrait" (Parr & Badger, 289). Contains a foreword by Harry Callahan, an introduction by Shuzo Takiguchi, and notes by Yusako Kamekura, all in English and Japanese. Without scarce bellyband, rarely found. Book about-fine, slipcase with some foxing and light restoration. A beautiful copy of a scarce book, in original slipcase.

"Like the earlier work the book is split into sections, seven of them this time, revealing various aspects of Chicago and the two major photographic preoccupations of Ishimoto at the time - the formal urban landscape and the street portrait. If the portraits and street-life images win out, it is because people are more interesting then things, and the photographer himself is more challenged by people, less prone to exercising merely formal concerns, though no Ishimoto image is ever less than elegant" (Parr, Badger, The Photobook: A History volume I - p. 289). First Edition
First edition. Hardcover. 223 pages. Ishimoto's second major monograph. Features a foreword by Harry Callahan in English and Japanese. While the book was released in 1969, the images are all from the 1950s and early 1960s and capture an innocence and grace that would soon be a memory in the turbulent later years of the decade. The influence of Ishimoto's years at The Institute of Design is unmistakable but he has his own voice that is beautifully expressed in this striking collection of black and white images. A clean and tight very near fine copy in black cloth boards and in an about fair example of the photo-illustrated slipcase that has splitting to the edges and the backstrip is missing. No dust jacket as issued. Still a solid copy of this terrific book and priced accordingly. (Parr & Badger v1, 289).
