First edition and firstq printing. Hardcover. 223 pages. Ishimoto's second major monograph. Features a foreword by Harry Callahan in English and Japanese. While the book was released in 1969, the images are all from the 1950s and early 1960s and capture an innocence and grace that would soon be a memory in the turbulent later years of the decade. The influence of Ishimoto's years at The Institute of Design is unmistakable but he has his own voice that is beautifully expressed in this striking collection of black and white images. A clean and tight very near fine copy in black cloth boards and in a near fine photographically illustrated slipcase that has some very minor wear Signed by Ishimoto on the title page and dated in 1982. A very pleasing copy of this classic. (Parr & Badger v1, 289).

Layout by Yusaku Kamehura. Text in Japanese and English Hardback with full black cloth and title to the spine and front cover. 4to. pp. 224. . Ottimo (Fine). Senza custodia, ma ottima copia (Without original white card slip-case, otherwise fine). Prima edizione (First edition). . "Like the earlier work the book is split into sections, seven of them this time, revealing various aspects of Chicago and the two major photographic preoccupations of Ishimoto at the time - the formal urban landscape and the street portrait. If the portraits and street-life images win out, it is because people are more interesting then things, and the photographer himself is more challenged by people, less prone to exercising merely formal concerns, though no Ishimoto image is ever less than elegant" (Parr, Badger, The Photobook: A History volume I - p. 289). Book First Edition
First edition; 4to (269 x 282 mm, 10½ x 11 in); black-and-white photographs printed in offset, minor marking to first and last page; black cloth-covered boards, titles stamped in white on front, light rubbing to sides, publisher's photo-illustrated paper-covered board slipcase, toned, lightly worn and soiled, short splits at spine, publisher's card laid in, lacking the printed wraparound band and card enclosing piece, near-fine in a very good slipcase; 223, [1]pp. Ishimoto Yasuhiro was born in San Francisco in 1921, and he moved with his family to Japan at the age of three. After graduating high school, he returned to San Francisco to study. A year later, as a result of the war, he was sent to an internment camp in Colorado for Japanese citizens and those of Japanese descent. It was here that his interest in photography began. After the war, Ishimoto went to Chicago and studied at the Institute of Design under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. He graduated in 1952 and returned to Japan the following year, although he continued to travel between the two countries. Chicago, Chicago was published in the year that he was granted Japanese citizenship. Ishimoto took these photographs of architectural views, beach and street scenes, and portraits in the late 1950s and early '60s, which clearly reflect his formal training at the Chicago Institute of Design. Harry Callahan writes in his foreword that Ishimoto 'has made us see more intensely our Chicago and his concern for life everywhere.' The Photobook A History, I p289; The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990 p390.

First Edition
First edition. Hardcover. First printing. While this book has the same title as Ishimoto's seminal 1969 book this is a completely different collection of black and white images of the title city. A very near fine copy in black cloth boards in a close to near fine dust jacket that has some of the usual rubbing to the uncoated paper and with some very minor wear. Still, a very nice copy of this terrific book from a vastly underappreciated photographer who studied with Harry Callahan at The Institute of Design in Chicago.
