Book
Taschenbuch. Kartoniert. Condition: Gut. Erste Auflage dieser Ausgabe. 151 (3) Seiten. 17,9 cm. Guter Zustand. Aus dem Besitz der Gräfin Ledebur. A fascinating account of Maugham's travels in China by the neglected 20th century master. Maugham spent the winter months of 1919-20 travelling 1500 miles up the Yangtze River. Always more interested in people than places, he gave full rein to a sensitive and philosophical nature. On a Chinese Screen is the refined accumulation of the countless scraps of paper on which he had taken notes. Within the narrow confines of their colonial milieu, missionaries, consuls, army officers and company managers are all gently ridiculed as they persist obliviously with the life they know. - William Somerset Maugham ['s?m?s?t m??m] (* 25. Januar 1874 in Paris; 16.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Good only. This copy had the misfortune of encountering the Racine, Wisconsin public library, which rebound it and branded it indelibly. The stout library boards have done a very good job of protecting the volume within. On the other hand, there are ink stamps as well as a hole-punched "Public Library / Racine Wisconsin" to the title page. The succeeding dedication page also bears an ink stamp, pencil marking, and glued strip close to the spine identifying the individual responsible for the rebinding as "Hertz". Indeed it does, in this case. Further library evidence mars the bfep and back pastedown. Pages are mostly clean and clear, with only a small handful of minor stains. Looking on the bright side, this is an opportunity to acquire two books in one: a reading copy and a true first edition!.
