Of this edition of Codex Seraphinianus 4000 copies have been printed of which this is number 3298, signed on the colophon page in a neat blue ink hand by the author. Black silk [or silk-like] binding, with a pristine color plate pasted on the front board of each volume and with crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the front boards and the spines. Unbumped spine heads and tails, and with sharp corners. Black trefoil design pastedowns/FEPs. The text blocks are firmly bound in. Approximately 171 numbered pages in each volume, including numerous color illustrations throughout each volume. Immensely clean and crisp. No tears, marks or other demerits observed. Almost certainly unread. Each volume in a matching custom clamshell box, heavy-duty. Clamshell boxes of black fabric with black paper front and back, and with small paper labels to the spines. As to the clamshell boxes, generally unbumped or slightly bumped and with minor rubbing. Trivial creasing at the extreme lower left corner of the paper affixed to the front board of one of the boxes. The same for the extreme upper left corner of the other box. The boxes have done an excellent job protecting the contents. A Fine set of two volumes in Very Good Plus boxes. Includes slipped in to the first volume a letter to the reader from the publisher. The letter is in English French and Italian. The letter is in pristine condition. The true first edition is extremely scarce on the market in any condition. Codex Seraphinianus was conceived as an encyclopedia of sorts, with its first volume devoted to the natural sciences and the second to the sciences of man. Make of it what you will. Signed by Author. Codex Seraphinianus
Book Description: Franco Maria Ricci Editore, Milano, 1981. Hardcover. Illustrated by Serafini, Luigi (illustrator). First Edition. Edition limited to 4000 numbered copies. In two volumes each in clamshell box. Signed by the author on the colophon page. Bound in black silk with gilt titles and decorations on cover and spine, printed on Fabriano paper. Foreword by Italo Calvino. Both volumes are in fine condition. Probably the most famous of the titles published by Franco Maria Ricci and surely the most unusual. A masterpiece of fantasy painstakingly illustrating a non-existent world and written in a non-existent language which, at times, seems to be a surrealist parody of our own world. Serafini, an architect and graphic designer, wrote and illustrated the volumes during a two-year period in the late 1970s. A lovely set. ; Folio; Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 17701
