Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. First Thus. A pocket edition of the Book of Common Prayer, for use by the church in the Dominion of Canada. No date but published sometime around the 1950s. ***Very good in black soft leather covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and front cover. Gilt still bright. The covers are just slightly marked with age and handling. Very light reading crease to the spine. Marbled endpapers. Internally, the book is in near fine condition. No foxing. No splitting. No creasing. With a bookplate on the front pastedown 'Clive Leslie George', otherwise no inscriptions. Pages clean. Spine tight. Printed on ultra-thin paper, as with many bibles and prayer books. ***120mm x 80mm. 739 pages. ***'The Book of Common Prayer is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion, as well as by other Christian churches historically related to Anglicanism. The original book, published in 1549 in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. The work of 1549 was the first prayer book to include the complete forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English. It contained Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion and also the occasional services in full: the orders for Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, "prayers to be said with the sick", and a funeral service. It also set out in full the "propers" (that is the parts of the service which varied week by week or, at times, daily throughout the Church's Year): the introits, collects, and epistle and gospel readings for the Sunday service of Holy Communion. Old Testament and New Testament readings for daily prayer were specified in tabular format as were the Psalms; and canticles, mostly biblical, that were provided to be said or sung between the readings. ***The 1549 book was soon succeeded by a more reformed revision in 1552 under the same editorial hand, that of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. It was used only for a few months, as after Edward VI's death in 1553, his half-sister Mary I restored Roman Catholic worship. Mary died in 1558 and, in 1559, Elizabeth I reintroduced the 1552 book with modifications to make it acceptable to more traditionally minded worshippers and clergy. ***In 1604, James I ordered some further changes, the most significant being the addition to the Catechism of a section on the Sacraments. Following the tumultuous events surrounding the English Civil War, when the Book was again abolished, another modest revision was published in 1662. That edition remains the official prayer book of the Church of England, although through the later twentieth century alternative forms which were technically supplements largely displaced the Book of Common Prayer for the main Sunday worship of most English parish churches. A Book of Common Prayer with local variations is used in churches around, or deriving from, the Anglican Communion in over 50 different countries and in over 150 different languages. In some parts of the world, the 1662 Book remains technically authoritative but other books or patterns have replaced it in regular worship. ***Traditional English Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian prayer books have borrowed from the Book of Common Prayer and the marriage and burial rites have found their way into those of other denominations and into the English language. Like the King James Version of the Bible and the works of Shakespeare, many words and phrases from the Book of Common Prayer have entered common parlance.' [Wiki] ***A nice copy of the Book of Common Prayer, published sometime around 1950, and designed to be kept in the pocket and consequently seldom found in such well preserved collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First edition. Shelf wear to tips, corners and edges of book, rubbed, lacks front free endpaper, previous owner's penciled inscription to first blank page, scattered staining, else clean and unmarked, quite tight. Black and gilt decorated full leather. Blind stamped previous owner's name to front cover. Three engraved title pages with appropriate vignettes: Main title page; The Lord's Supper; Psalms & Hymns. As a consequence of the American Revolution the Episcopal Church separated itself from the Church of England in 1789, having been established in the United States in 1607. The church's prayer book, published in 1790, had as its sources, the 1662 English book and the 1764 Scottish Liturgy which Bishop Seabury of Connecticut had introduced following his consecration in Aberdeen in 1784. In remarking on the changes wrought by the Revolution the preface to the 1789 Book of Common Prayer says "this Church is far from intending to depart from the Church of England in any essential point of doctrine, discipline, or worship.further than local circumstances require." Overall the book was modeled in the English Prayer Book, the Convention having resisted attempts at deletion and revision. This version remained in use until relatively minor revisions were made in 1892 and 1928. Most items ship with free delivery confirmation, electronic tracking and jacket protectors (generally over $10.00) if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.
