Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First hardcover edition, published by Macmillan, 1906. Historical fiction set in New Hampshire. A story of local politics and corruption, Churchill changed the names of the real people and places that inspired the story. 543 pages, 5-1/2" X 7-3/4". Published June 1906. No dust jacket. Red cloth covered cover boards, with the title and author name in in gilt on the spine and front cover. Some light edge wear to the covers, the tips of the corners are just slightly bent inward. Rubbing wear to the gilt border on the fore edge side of the front cover, but otherwise the lettering and design elements are intact and legible. Front hinge just slightly loose at the bottom edge, back hinge has a crack at the gutter - about 1-1/2" at the bottom, and 1" at the top. So the text block is intact, and all text pages are intact, just slightly loose. Former owner's name and address written in what appears to be fountain pen ink on the first flyleaf, along with a second name that appears to be written in more recent ballpoint pen ink above the older name. Thirty illustrations by Florence Scovel Shinn, who would later become known for her own book; 'The Game of Life and How To Play It'. Gilt top-edge has one slight bump mark near the spine, but otherwise is still bright. No further writing on the text pages besides the names mentioned earlier. Age tanning to the text pages at an appropriate amount considering the age of the book and paper stock used. Not a library discard copy. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
