Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition (C-L below the statement). This is the genuine First Edition, the Harper & Brothers edition, NOT the Grosset & Dunlap edition. I believe there is only one other genuine first edition for sale on the Internet. I purchased this book years ago directly from the library of the former Assistant Secretary Of War and US High Commissioner of Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. It has the bookplate, on the first front end paper, of a Wadsworth Zinsser, a relative of McCloy's wife Ellen Zinsser. The book is in pretty nice shape. You can see the covers in the photos. There is a tiny spot of soiling off the front top edge. That's about it. There's a very light crease off the front middle edge. The spine is toned to a darker blue than the front and rear. The pink lettering and design on the front is nicely bright. Same for the white lettering and design on the spine. I don't see any indication that the white was once pink, but I guess it's possible. The edges and corners are in solid shape, just a tiny bit of superficial rubbing at the front top corner. The page edges look very good, the middle one is deckled or rough-cut. He did a very good job. There are a few scratches at the bottom edge of the spine and some crinkling and a bit of rubbing at the top edge. There is a horizontal crease on the rear cover (and the same crease can be seen on the inside rear cover). The spine has a moderate forward lean. You can straighten it out, but it is used to its lean and may insist. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are nicely tight, as are the covers. There is only one instance of a space at the juncture between facing pages, between the Books By page and the title page. Both pages are tightly bound from top to bottom, but if you look from the side you'll see the space and the webbing revealed by it. The interior of the book is in very nice shape. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any soiling at all. Clearly no critter or dog has attempted to peruse it. The first third of the pages have a very light crease or semi-crease just above their bottom corners. Other than that, I saw only four or five consecutive pages with a bottom corner crease. I didn't see any top corner creases, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There is one tiny nick at the top edge of one page. There are no tears. There are no markings in the book. Mr. Zinsser's bookplate is the only attachment to be found anywhere in the book. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. From Google Books: 'This book contains a collection of seventeen delightful stories with a number of dogs as their heroes, written by the seminal writer of dog-based literature, Albert Payson Terhune. Terhune was an avid dog-breeder and brought to his stories an impressive knowledge of the subject. On top of his, Terhune's hear-warming tales were written with an unparalleled affection for his subjects, providing an uncanny understanding of the animals which seemed to champion their marvelous potential and proven nobility. A mixture of fiction and non-fiction, this wonderful collection is sure to appeal to dog-lovers and will make for a worthy addition to any collection of Terhune's work.'.
