Seller: Ground Zero Books, Ltd., Silver Spring, MD, U.S.A.
Trade paperback. Condition: Fair. Fully Revised Third Edition. [2], 90 pages. 126 illustrations. Format is approximately 8.25 inches by 10.5 inches. Cover soiled and appears to have some damp staining. No significant impact on pages. This is part of the Ancients series. This is the second of a series of booklets on the armies of the ancient world, intended to provide background information for students of military history, military modellers, illustrations, writers, and archeologists. The only sources on which reliance has been placed are monumental evidence, accounts by ancient authors, and excavation reports. This third edition has been thoroughly updated to take account of the latest research findings. In 1968, and, along with Bob O'Brien and Ed Smith, founded the Wargames Research Group. One of the basic principles of the WRG was that wargames rules should be based on the study of the nature of warfare of the period being modelled, and Phil was initially the researcher of the group. He published his best-known work, the Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome, in 1972. Roman unit names and ranks are presented as originally termed and not rendered into modern English--thus Legiones is used and not Legions, and Cohortes is used and not Cohorts. The contents are: Tactical Methods, Organization and Formation, Composition of Armies, Major Battles of the Period, and Dress and Equipment. Phil Barker (born 5 November 1932) is one of the major figures in the development of the modern hobby of tabletop wargaming, particularly that of ancient warfare, and is a co-founder of the Wargames Research Group. In the 1960s he was a methods engineer at British Leyland. However, in the 1970s he took voluntary redundancy to become the first person in the UK to work full-time on wargames writing and rules design. At the time, he was also a keen horseman, a skill which he used to advantage in carrying out experiments in the use of cavalry weapons. Phil Barker was a founder member of the Society of Ancients, serving on the committee for many years and contributing regularly to their magazine Slingshot. In 1994 he was elected Life Vice-President.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Marcus Ulpius Nerva Traianus, commonly known as Trajan, was the thirteenth Roman Emperor, who reigned from AD 98 until his death in AD 117. Born Marcus Ulpius Traianus into a non-patrician family in the Hispania Baetica province, Trajan rose to prominence during the reign of emperor Domitian, serving as a general in the Roman army along the German frontier, and successfully crushing the revolt of Antonius Saturninus in 89. On September 18, 96, Domitian was succeeded by Marcus Cocceius Nerva, an old and childless senator who proved to be unpopular with the army. After a brief and tumultuous year in power, a revolt by members of the Praetorian Guard compelled him to adopt the more popular Trajan as his heir and successor. Nerva died on January 27, 98, and was succeeded by his adopted son without incident.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Carpi or Carpiani were an ancient tribe (perhaps Dacian-speaking), that resided, between not later than ca. AD 100 and until at least ca. AD 300, in the eastern Carpathian Mountains, and in what became later the Principality of Moldavia (modern eastern Romania, Moldova, and small neighboring areas of Ukraine). The Carpi were one of the tribes of Dacia that apparently escaped subjugation by the Roman Empire when it annexed the central part of Dacia in AD 106. However, it is possible that the Carpi did not enter the Dacian region until (and maybe because of) the Dacian Wars (101-106), as they are not mentioned in the classical sources until the mid 2nd century. The group is first mentioned in the period following the Roman annexation of Dacia. After 150 years of obscurity, the Carpi emerged in ca. 240 as a major and persistent adversary of the Romans. In the period 240-70, the Carpi were an important component of a loose coalition of Transdanubian barbarian tribes that included also Germanic and Sarmatian elements. 132 pp. Englisch.
