Book Description: New York 1889 The Century Co., 1889. First Edition quarto; 145 pp.; yellow paper over boards, decorated on front and back cover, and (richly) on spine; 19 illustrations by Edward W. Kemble in black and white; rubbing to top and bottom of spine, particularly at bottom, where a tiny bit of spine strip has been rubbed away; rubbing to edges of spine; spine, however, is still legible and bright; general light soiling and age-fading to boards, but virtually none of the paper has been scraped away, and the lettering and decorations are still remarkably vivid and fresh; slight rubbing to corners, which are only lightly bumped; original yellow endpapers, clean and untorn; hinges firm; gift inscription in an old hand on second free endpaper; very occasional faint smudging to pages, which show light age-yellowing along some edges;boards flat and unbowed; an unusually well-preserved copy, sturdy and appealing the title story, and 13 other stories, "told after dark"; a memorable linking together of stories told with vivid imaginative power, and brilliant, lucid, sometimes fantastic illustrations; this was the first of several collaborations between the author and artist; Kemble had only recently completed the drawings for two books by Mark Twain.
