The book was bought in by us dis-bound and has been re-sewn on two tapes with new mull' back strip and best match book cloth with remnants of original cloth spine laid on. New plain end papers and some cleaning to original heavily soiled boards which show heavy shelf wear to corners with boards exposed at tips. Pencil previous owner name and name of presenter in appropriate boxes. A book very much of it's day and the subject matter is now regarded as non p.c. if not offensive but which was clearly a favorite and much read as evidenced by finger soiling to margins throughout. No other notable defects).

Boards, spine, corners and edges have seen considerable use and are worn and somewhat faded but book is tight and square and interior is clean and sharp, other than attractive gift inscription in an old hand to "Caspar Wistar Morris, from his dear father, February 8th, 1890". Book came from the Morris estate. Filled with b/w illustrations by E.W. Kemble.

Snugly bound and very neat in original pictorial dust jacket. Bound in glazed pictorial paper covered boards with matching pictorial design to the jacket printed on thin paper stock - a notriously fragile dust jacket. Just superficial shelf rubbing to boards at corner tips and mild shelf tap top front corners. Small area of toning to binding material at crown where small chips from the jacket exposed the binding. Jacket is moderately toned to spine and adjacent areas of the sides as well as the front edge. Jacket is rubbed and worn with short closed tears and shallow chips at edges. Content bright and fresh, illustrated throughout with b&w drawings by Edward Kemble. Lovely copy in the very infrquently seen original dust jacket. Book is VG++ to NF in VG- jacket.

The jacket has been archivally backed, with some edge restoration, and is visually quite stunning. Housed in period custom slipcase. A true rarity in jacket.
