Item Description: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1948. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. First UK Edition. 19 x 13 Cms (7.5" x 5"). PUBLISHING DETAILS: First UK edition of Ray Bradbury's first book, published by Hamish Hamilton of London in 1948. 20 short stories in 271 pages. Size; 19 x 13 cms (7.5" x 5"). Weight; 195g (7 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate the book as very good and the facsimile dustjacket is mint. The book's original dark green cloth covers, with silver spine titling, are generally clean and sound, with slightly bruised corners and a little fading to the spine (see photo). The binding remains tight and secure throughout. The text is clean, bright and free from foxing. There is an owner's name and date penned at the front pastedown and a torn corner to the back free endpaper. The facsimile dustjacket is professionally produced and protected in a clear, removable sleeve. Altogether, this is a tidy example of a sought after first edition. THE BOOK: The stories included in the UK edition are: 'The Homecoming', 'Skeleton', 'The Jar', 'The Lake', 'The Tombstone', 'The Smiling People', 'The Emissary', 'The Traveller', 'The Small Assassin', 'The Crowd', 'The Handler', 'Let's Play Poison', 'Uncle Einar', 'The Wind', 'The Night', 'There Was An Old Woman', 'The Dead Man', 'The Man Upstairs', 'Cistern' and 'The Next In Line'. REVIEW: 'Once to be titled The Child's Garden of Terrors, Bradbury's first story collection rolls into town, spinning stardust and cobwebs in its wondrous wake. Obsessed with death, old age and a longing to retain the eternal child in all of us, Bradbury once described himself as the "quasi god-son of Edgar Allan Poe," though Poe lacked the gift of humor that has helped shape Bradbury's seductive shadows. "You are only eight years old, you know little of death, fear, or dread," writes Bradbury in "The Night" as he powerfully encapsulates in a neat eight pages a child's first discovery of the unknown. Other standouts include the scary carnival story, "The Jar"; the Elliot family tales, "Uncle Einar," "The Homecoming" and "The Traveler"; "The Small Assassin," a sinister story far more frightening than Rosemary's Baby; and the harrowing "The Next in Line". - PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (USA). Item Description: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1948. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First UK Edition. 8vo, 271pp. Publisher's original dark green cloth covered boards in extremely good condition overall. Silver titles to spine. There is a minor bruise at the spine head/back board corner and another at the spine tail/back board corner. There is a hint of dust soiling along the top and bottom edges of the boards and some light spotting to the edges of the text block. The binding is very tight and square. Internally, the ffep has a biro inscription underneath which is the AUTHOR'S SIGNATURE, dated 25th August 1990. There is light sporadic foxing to the first five and last three pages, and also to the page edges. Otherwise, the pages are very clean and free from any marks or blemishes. The original dramatic dust jacket, illustrated by Michael Ayrton, is price clipped and is now protected in a removable plastic sleeve - not shown in the images. Three fore edge corners and the spine corners are lightly rubbed with minor loss. There is minor chipping to the spine head and tail with some surface loss as well at the spine tail - see images. There is a 2.5cm closed tear down the from the top of the front joint and a 1cm rubbed line further down the joint. There is some light soiling to the rear fore edge, light soiling to the back with some light foxing and one small finger-print sized foxed spot. In all, this is a very good plus copy of an increasingly scarce UK edition of this classic sci-fi book, seldom found with the author¿s signature. If you would like any further information or images, please do not hesitate to ask. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 000014

Item Description: Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1947. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition. Inscribed by Bradbury on the front free endpaper: "For Stu Oderman - / This rare first / edition of 'Dark / Carnival' signed / on the first day / of January, 1982! / With friendship! / From / Ray Bradbury". Publisher's black cloth, lettered in yellow. About near fine, with some rubbing to lettering on the spine, light offsetting to the endpapers, pages lightly toned. Overall, a pleasing copy of Bradbury's first book, inscribed by the author. Bradbury inscribed this copy of Dark Carnival to Stuart Oderman, a pianist best known for his musical accompaniments for silent films. Although the origin of their friendship is unclear, Bradbury and Oderman were long-time friends and maintained a steady written correspondence from the early 1960s through Bradbury's death in 2012. In a 2008 interview with The Star Ledger, Oderman cited Bradbury as one of his favorite authors. A collection of his macabre short stories, Dark Carnival is Ray Bradbury's first published book and includes "The Small Assassin," "Jack-in-the-Box," "The Scythe," "Uncle Einar," "The Traveler," and "The Jar," among others. Additionally it includes "The Homecoming," which Truman Capote famously discovered in a pile of submissions while working as an editor for Mademoiselle. Interestingly, Bradbury originally intended to title Dark Carnival "The Child's Garden of Terrors," which emphasized the nightmarish qualities of the collected fiction. Notably, this collection's carnival and childhood themes are personally significant to Bradbury as they both played a large role in his becoming a writer. According to his official biographer, Sam Weller, Bradbury began writing it after visiting a travelling circus that came to his town, where he met the eccentric Mr. Electrico, who cryptically instructed the young Bradbury to "live forever!" Bradbury claimed that he began writing voraciously shortly after this significant experience at the travelling circus. Inscribed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # RB006
