Item Description: London The Westminster Press [1911], 1911. First edition. Illustrated with twenty tipped-in colour plates with captioned guards by Frank Reynolds and with a vignette titlepage. 4to, publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and in gilt and black on the upper cover, with a silhouette decoration on the upper cover in gilt and black, in the scarce original dustjacket. 572 pp. A very fine and bright copy, very fresh and very clean, the scarce dustjacket has keep the red cloth vivid and unfaded and free from rubbing or wear, the jacket itself is complete with no chips or tears, just some minor age rubbing. FIRST EDITION OF THIS HANDSOME ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF CHARLES DICKENS’ CLASSIC WORK IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION. The publisher's red cloth is prone to fading so this title is typically found with the spine panel mellowed, but in this case the fully intact jacket has protected it beautifully and the cloth is a vivid as could be. "With many lovers of the author's works 'David Copperfield' ranks as the finest of his writings. With a book which gave to the world such characters as Betsy Trotwood, Micawber, the Pegottys and Mr. Dick, to mention only a few, it would have been strange if it had been otherwise" (Eckel, p. 77). Reynolds’ twenty fine colour plates bring these characters vividly to life. Bookseller Inventory # 26797

H. Townsend as the Art Editor for Punch. He was also a prolific watercolour painter and was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours from 1903.
