The narrative was written by Thompson about 1847 from his original notebooks and printed from the manuscript journal obtained in the 1890's by the editor, noted Canadian explorer, scientist and surveyor, Joseph Burr Tyrrell. It relates Thompson s extensive travels and explorations on the prairies and on the Pacific slope in the employ of the Hudson s Bay and North West Companies as a fur trader and surveyor. The years 1807-1812 were spent as a partner in the North West Company in Alberta and British Columbia, and the states of Montana, Idaho and Washington. In 1807 Thompson built the first trading post on the Columbia River, which he named Kootenae House, and in 1811, he became the first white man to descend the Columbia from its source to its mouth. His landmark map of the western territories, a four-sheet copy of which is reproduced here, served as the basis for all subsequent maps of the region. " as an explorer and surveyor, [Thompson's] work has earned him a reputation as one of the best pioneering geographers in North America." (John Nicks, DCB) TPL 922. Peel 78. Strathern & Edwards 539.
