Book Description: Michael Joseph, London, 1962. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo. Autograph; AUTOGRAPHED on titlepage "Hi, XXXX, Dick Francis." The true First Edition (published in London) of Dick Francis' first thriller in what became a landmark series of horse racing mysteries. Burgundy cloth binding in pictorial dust wrapper. Binding has a very slightly lean, corners sharp, light offsetting to free endpapers where exposed beyond dustwrapper flaps (as usual), a very few faint spots of foxing to preliminary leaves, (the half title leaf and the last blank leaf and the rear free-endpaper). Dustwrapper design by Trevor Denning; price-clipped, some very modest edgewear with minor loss at spine ends and lower corners, mild toning to white background and some faint superficial staining to rear panel (see images). Entirely without any restoration or sophistication - a satisfying copy of one of the major high spots of twentieth century modern first editions, inscribed and signed at the center of the title page. Quite scarce, especially autographed.; Signed by Author; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. Bookseller Inventory # 34551

Book Description: Michael Joseph, 1962. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Published by Michael Joseph, London in 1962. This is a first edition, first impression hard back. A near fine copy in a very good dust wrapper. The book itself is free from any marks, smudges or inscriptions. The pages are clean and white with no sign of browning or other discolouration. Overall it is a book which defies its age. There are two small imperfections which prevent this book achieving a rating of ‘fine’. First, there is one tiny foxing spot on the vertical edge of the text block; this foxing has a 1mm bleed into no more than 6 of the pages. It is visible on these few pages only on very close examination. Second, the book is slightly cocked as a result, we believe, of poor shelving. The fine condition of the pages points away from a conclusion that the cocking is a result of extensive use. There is the usual offsetting to the end-papers. The dust jacket is the first, correct state, unclipped and shows the correct price of 15/-. The dust jacket is in remarkable condition considering its age and the poor quality of paper used. It has suffered only minor edge loss over the 50 years it has been protecting the colour and vibrancy of the gilt lettering to the spine. The front and rear boards are consequently in perfect condition. On the fault side, there is slight age toning to much of the rear wrapper and to the forward edge of the front wrapper. The spine of the dust jacket is slightly bumped The corners are sharp and the spine lettering un-faded with the usual exception of the very bottom of the spine where the pink words "Michael Joseph" are faded but still visible on close inspection. The dust wrapper is now protected by a clear, removable, acid free acetate sleeve. This is an iconic publication. It was the second book and first novel written by Dick Francis. The sales of his first book (an autobiography) were not particularly strong thus the first impression of this book was limited by the publisher. This, together with the relatively poor standard of paper used, makes ‘Dead Cert’ one of the most difficult modern first editions to locate. We have handled 4 copies over the last eight years and this copy is the best of them. It is wholly original and complete. There are no repairs, touch ups or bookplates. It has been sold only twice. Once to the original buyer, the second time to us. A rare opportunity to acquire a gem. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual item. Please request further scans if you wish. We will be happy to oblige. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. Bookseller Inventory # 1003

Book Description: Michael Joseph, 1962. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Published by Michael Joseph (London) in 1962, this is a very good, signed first edition, first printing of the first novel by Dick Francis. The book is in very good plus condition. It is square and remains tightly bound. The boards are fresh and clean. The gilt lettering to the spine is bright and faultless. There is a tiny nick to the bottom of the front board and a small almost indiscernible amount of colour deterioration to the very bottom edge of the spine. The edge of the text block has some foxing and is age toned. The pages to the book have browned universally. Mr Francis has flat signed the front title page in his usual bold and slightly slanted style. The unclipped dust jacket is the first state and shows the correct price of 15/-. It is complete with little if any edge wear. It too has yellowed and the publishers name has faded from the spine – as is usually the case with this particular book. There are no repairs or touch ups and the dust jacket is now protected by an acid free archival sleeve. A desperately difficult book to find flat signed in first edition. Auctions and websites are littered with copies which have book-plates, tipped in signatures and dedications. This is an honest to goodness flat signed copy of one of the most difficult modern first editions to find in very good, collectible condition. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual item. Please request further scans if you wish. We will be happy to oblige. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. Book Description: London, Michael Joseph, 1962–2000, 2000. 39 individual works, octavo. Original boards, titles to spines. With the dust jackets. Some minor browning to page edges of first few volumes, dust jackets on early volumes supplied from other first edition copies, large majority of other titles fine in dust jackets. A bright, attractive set. First editions, first impressions. All copies with presentation inscriptions in the hand of Dick Francis from Dick and Mary to Susan and Roger [Dicey], apart from Dead Cert and Odds Against inscribed solely from Dick, and Rat Race in the hand of Mary Francis. For Kicks is dated 1964 (published 1965). Longshot with a letter by Dick Francis mentioning how he had given a copy of our book to the Queen and the Queen Mother while at Ascot. "Mary and I had always worked on the books together. She was brilliant at the research and had the uncanny knack of asking the right questions to get the information we needed. She learnt all sorts of new skills in the pursuit of knowledge for the stories; she became a pilot for Flying Finish and Rat Race; she took up photography for Reflex and painting for In The Frame. We would discuss the plot every night and she would read through the pages and polish the prose. And so it had been for nearly forty years with a new book every autumn. Now it was time for a rest. But sadly, just a month after we took the decision, Mary suddenly died. Our rest in retirement together was non existent and I was left alone" (Dick Francis 2006). Genuine presentation copies of Dick Francis books from Mary and himself are not common and to find a complete set of all the novels they co-wrote each presented to the same person on publication is rare indeed.
