First german edition of "L' ottica delle oscillazioni elettriche" (1897) which summarized Righi's results. This book is considered a classic of experimental electromagnetism. Augusto Righi (27.Aug. 1850 - 8.June 1920), italian physicist, born in Bologna, and famous for his work on electromagnetic waves. He was Prof. of Physics at the newly established University of Palermo, at Padua and Bologna, where he taught until his death. He invented an induction electrometer (1872) capable of detecting and amplifying small electrostatic charges, very similar to that of Van de Graaff's accelerator (1933). He discovered magnetic hysteresis (1880), and whilst working at Palermo discovered that bismuth exhibits a Hall effect thousands of times stronger than that of gold. He introduced the term "photoelectric effect" to describe the increase in the conductivity of air gaps between electrodes when the air exposed to ultraviolet light. Embarking on a series of experiments that he hoped would demonstrate that Hertzian waves obeyed the laws of classical optics, such as those of interference and diffraction, he generated Hertzian waves with wavelengths of just 26 millimetres. In doing so he was the first person to generate "microwaves", thereby opening a whole new area of the electromagnetic spectrum to research and subsequent application. His experiments with microwaves did indeed confirm that Hertzian waves behaved very similarly to visible light and showed comparable interference, diffraction, refraction and absorption effects. By the turn of the 20th cent. he had turned to work on X-rays and the Zeeman effect.
