Decorative Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: None. 16mo (6 7/8" x 4 3/4"), reddish brown vertically-ribbed cloth with gilt lettering to spine and more elaborate gilt title and blindstamping on front cover, dark green-coated endpapers, i-iv, [5]-128 pages. A scarce, somewhat philosophical--though amusing--hunting fantasy by Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897). After fledgling starts in poetry, the drama, and journalism, Daudet achieved considerable success with humorous Tartarin de Tarascon (1872), which he followed up with Tartarin sur les Alpes, and Port-Tarascon. Thenceforth, he became a moderately successful French man of letters who devoted himself mainly to writing novels. He was also a friend of Mallarmé for whom Daudet contributed some short pieces to La deniere mode. The first American edition of this book was published by H. B. Fuller, also of Boston, in 1874. Finding no British imprints at this early date after the French publication of the Aventures prodigieuses de Tartarin de Tarascon by Daudet in 1872, we assume that the Fuller printing is also the First English language publication. The Gill & Co. publication is its first publication of Tartarin, but in the year after Fuller's edition. We have not been able to physically compare or collate the editions to see if Gill reprinted Fuller. Binding tight with pages clean though moderately and uniformly age-toned. Foxing on the front endpapers through the title page (also lighter foxing on the last two pages); rubbing and some losses of cloth edges along extremities, corners, and more along the lower front gutter edge of the spine. First edition by Gill & Co.; Second American Edition (after Fuller).

Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Doré, Gustave (illustrator). First Edition. Ultra-rare printing, publisher. No date; circa 1885. Mauve buckram (cloth) boards, ornate gilt embossed cover and spine design, titles, moderate corner, edge wear, spine sunning. Blindstamped borders at front, back covers. Interestingly, both the title and illustrator's names are mispelled at cover and title page. Frontispiece image of Quixote w/joust, and Sancho, on horseback. Tissue guard intact. Pages very good; unsigned vintage bookplate inside cover, name at endpaper. Dk. brown endpapers. Fine string bind solid; hinges intact. With several illustrations by the famed Gustave Doré. Near very good rarity. The Delightful History of the Most Ingenious Knight in the adventures of Don Quixote, and his squire Sancho Panza, as Quixote carries on his quest for chivalry and romance. Cervantes' tale of the deranged gentleman who turns knight-errant, tilts at windmills and battles with sheep in the service of the lady of his dreams, Dulcinea del Toboso, has fascinated generations of readers, and inspired other creative artists such as Flaubert, Picasso and Richard Strauss. The tall, thin knight and his short, fat squire, Sancho Panza, have found their way into the wider culture. Supposedly intended as a parody of the most popular escapist fiction of the day, the 'books of chivalry', this precursor of the modern novel broadened and deepened into a sophisticated, comic account of the contradictions of human nature. Cervantes' greatest work can be enjoyed on many levels, all suffused with a subtle irony that reaches out to encompass the reader. 424 pages. Insured post. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
