The dust jacket is in fair condition (edge crinkling, creases on front and back, faded spine). 9 x 6, 298 pages, 25 ounces XX [From the inner flaps] The wise guys called him crazy Dow. They scoffed at his activities and casually dismissed the prospects of his handmade bleach works with a few chuckles and a fast quip. There were others, however, who didn't laugh at his ideas. One of these was Hetty Green, the eccentric millionairess who had been tabbed the witch of Wall Street, one of the most astute investors the Street has ever known. Her investment near the turn of the century in 100 shares of Dow Chemical Company stock was to reap her estate nearly three-quarters of a million dollars in net profit when it was sold in 1936. But this book is more than the history of a company with a humble origin which grew into a giant corporation, making intelligent investors wealthy along the way. It is a fascinating tale of the complex and independent thinkers who helped crazy Dow's bleach works develop into one of the largest and most diversified chemical companies in the world. Each of several protagonists in the book has helped fashion the company in some manner through his own special influence and determination. One of the central figures is, naturally, Herbert Henry Dow, who yearned to be an architect but became a chemist by necessity. It was his experiments in a small hospital laboratory that resulted in the discovery on which the company was founded. Another important figure is his son, Willard, whose decision to halt research into a certain plastic initiated a company intrigue which eventually involved some members of the board of directors and several of the company's top scientists. There are many other candid tales about these two men, plus accounts of the other remarkable individuals of strong and complex personalities, woven into this witty and lively narrative. During research for this book, the company's archives were opened and the author was allowed complete access. Company executives, employees and retirees from those early days were interviewed and they talked freely about the men, the events and the decisions of which they had first-hand knowledge. A significant amount of previous}y undisclosed source material was gathered for this book and it has been used here wisely and extensively by Don Whitehead. There are excellent descriptions of the early days when operating expenses were met and received with only promises and faith. One of the most fascinating portions of the book is the meticulously documented life-or-death financial struggle between the young Dow Chemical Company and the entrenched German bromine cartel for the American bromine market. Readers will be able to follow the decisions made by Dow's executives during World War Il when company research secrets were donated to help the United States war effort. It is also clearly explained why Dow's board of directors stood firm on their commitment to produce napalm for use in the Vietnam conflict, even when demonstrations against the company were increasing in numbers and ferocity.

Don Whitehead (April 8, 1908 - January 12, 1981) was an American journalist. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom. He won the 1950 George Polk Award for wire service reporting. He was awarded the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, and 1952 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. Beginning in 1935, he worked for the Associated Press, covering World War II. His beats included coverage of the Eighth Army in Egypt, in September 1942, after which he was transferred to cover the American Army in Algeria. He then covered the Allied invasion of Sicily at Gela, with the First Infantry Division, the Allied invasion of Italy at Salerno, and the Italian campaign. He landed at Anzio in January 1944, then went to London to prepare for the Allied invasion of France. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day (June 6, 1944), with the 16th Regiment, of the First Infantry Division, and covered the push from the beachhead, Operation Cobra at Saint-Lô, and the pursuit across France. He got the first story on the Liberation of Paris and covered the U.S. First Army's push into Belgium and the crossing of the Rhine River. He also covered the meeting of American and Russian troops on the Elbe River. He covered the Korean War, He was Washington bureau chief for the New York Herald Tribune. From a review posted on-line: "As a Dow employee, this book was very interesting and I enjoyed learning about the history of the company. The story was well-written and kept me turning the pages for more. I like how the author explained a lot of the historical context of the times as the story went along as well. This book would probably be less interesting for those that don't work for Dow, but would certainly be intriguing for anyone involved in chemistry or the chemical industry. It amazes me how in the late 1800s, Dow was able to basically start a bromine plant in a wooden building - and from that grew a multi-billion dollar company.".
