Item Description: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914. First edition. Number 85 of 500 Deluxe copies SIGNED by Nielsen. 4to. Full white vellum with gilt lettering and gilt decorative panel with blue border. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Silk ties present. Loosely inserted is the notice for the Leicester Galleries exhibition held in November and December 1914, where the watercolours for this book were offered for sale. A fine, bright copy. This copy has been kept in beautiful condition by its original slipcase, which is complete and attractive, with a little rubbing to the edges. The vellum and gilt are positively gleaming, there is a very light patch of spotting to the fore edge of the upper cover. An exceptional copy. Pictorial endpapers illustrated in black silhouettes and gold designs. 25 colour plates are mounted on Japon and are all perfect under their captioned tissue guards. There are also a number of black and white drawings, chapter headings and decorative borders. East of the Sun and West of the Moon represents Nielsen's "pièce de resistance" in book illustration. His illustrations are very striking, leaving a lasting impression, and combined with the luxury of the book's production form a breathtaking result. Widely acknowledged as one of the most important and impressive books of the Golden Age of book illustration, this is a great rarity, especially in this wonderful original condition. Item Description: London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1914], 1914. Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and upper board gilt, pictorial endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription to front blank. Lightly rubbed at extremities with some minor scuffs to the lower board and spotting to edges of text block. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 24 plates with printed tissue-guards. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the front free endpaper, "To Miss Bernadine Murphy with my kindest regards, Kay Nielsen, April 1947". Also with a one-page manuscript letter signed by the author to the book's owner and dated October 10, 1948. Nielsen thanks Murphy for what seems to have been her attempt to find him work as an art teacher. "It was a charming act of yours to mention my name and talk about me as a teacher of art. It would have been wonderful if such arrangements could have been made Ė but already at that time we were about to leave", as he and his wife had been "trying to arrange our return to Denmark to join Ulla's mother. It has taken a lot of effort". Nielsen had been living in the US since 1936 and working for, among others, the Walt Disney animation studio. His finances became precarious during this period, and he and his wife received much help from friends. It seems that Murphy was one of these long-time friends and admirers: a gift inscription indicates that the book was given to her by a friend in 1914 and kept long enough to be signed by the author when she met him in the 1940s. Item Description: [London: Hodder & Stoughton,] [1914], 1914. Four engraved copperplates, each measuring approximately 183 × 134 mm, mounted in a row, together with a full-colour pull of the image, framed and glazed. Traces of green patina where copper has slightly oxidised, else fine condition. Original copperplates made for the four-colour separation process used to produce the final image published opposite p. 152 in the book. This remarkable survival shows Nielsen's painstaking artistic technique in building up the four-colour process (Rackham used a three-colour process) to produce the rich and complex illustrations for his deluxe books. Item Description: London: Hodder and Stroughton, 1914., 1914. Perhaps the Most Beautiful Children's Book Ever Published[NIELSEN, Kay, Illustrator. [ASBJÖRNSEN, Peter Christen, and Jörgen Ingebreksten Moe]. East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Old Tales from the North. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1914]. The first trade edition of Kay Nielsen's greatest work. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 8 5/8 in; 281 x 220 mm). [2], 206 , [1 printer's imprint], [1 blank] pp. Twenty-five mounted color plates with descriptive tissue guards, numerous black and white text illustrations. Publisher's dark blue cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Pictorial endpapers in gold and black. Some foxing to the margins of the text leaves, the plates clean and fresh. Some rubbing to the binding extremities but still a very good copy.Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersenís Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsenís designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsenís objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a storyís emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales). Item Description: Hodder & Stoughton, London. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. nd (1920's) - Art Colour Presentation Book Series. 8vo., 235 x 160mm. Blue cloth boards with gilt stamped titles to the spine and black with black and blue image to the front. 284pp, 24 tipped in coloured plates and black and white illustrations within the text. All text pages have a decorative boarder top and bottom and decorative endpieces to the end of each tale. The book comes with its very scarce original dust jacket that has an additional colour plate pasted down on the front and a list of other books available in the Hodder and Stoughton Art Colour Presentation series to the rear. The boards have been well protected by the dust jacket and are bright and unfaded as are the gilt titles. There is a little rubbing to the base of the spine and lower fore edge corners. Internally there is spotting from acid migration to the free endpapers and to a lesser extent the front pastedown. The front endpapers are a little cracked but the binding remains very firm. All 24 plates present and in bright and near fine condition with only slight rippling to the glued edge of one plate. Interestingly the plate facing p18 is mounted on an additional blank page following. There are a very few light foxing spots only, limited mostly to the margin. The very scarce dust jacket is in very good condition. There is some fading to the exposed parts. There is rubbing to the fore edge corners with minimal loss and chipping to the spine tips with the loss of the word "of" in the title on the spine and lesser loss to the bottom. All in a really nice early reprint of Nielsen's most famous work in very good condition with an extremely scarce dust jacket. Item Description: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Photographs by Kermit Roosevelt. Signed and inscribed by Kermit Roosevelt on October 18, 1926. Original publisher's cloth. Extremities lightly rubbed, rear board scuffed, gilt dimmed, else very good. East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a chronicle of Kermit and Theodore Roosevelt's fist Asian expedition, the 1925 Simpson-Roosevelts-Field Museum Expedition. Inspired by their father Teddy Roosevelt's post-presidency African safaris, the two brothers set out in search of the Marco Polo sheep (ovis poli), a rare subspecies of mountain sheep with distinctive curved horns whose image is stamped in gilt to this volume's front cover. East of the Sun recounts this trip, with the chapters written alternately by each brother. Additionally, the text is illustrated with Kermit's photographs from the exhibition, which further relates the Roosevelt sons' expeditions to their father's African safari, on which Kermit also served as photographer.
