Book Description: Simon and Schuster, New York, 1955. First edition of the author's first book. Slim quarto, original illustrated white cloth. Light toning, else near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with a small closed tear to the rear panel. Inscribed by the author, "For my dear Paul- from/ Eloise herself and The Author" and also signed by the illustrator, "and Hilary Knight in 2007". A very sharp copy, rare signed and inscribed by both Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight. "I am Eloise. I am six", So begins the start of the famed first book by Kay Thompson's "Eloise". " At rehearsals of her act with the Williams Brothers, Thompson (who was a professional singer) prized punctuality. Then one day she was late. In a high, childish voice that she had never used before, she made her apology. One of her co-workers said, 'Who are you, little girl?' Thompson replied, 'I am Eloise. I am six.' The others joined in the game, each assuming a juvenile identity, and it became a regular rehearsal pastime". (New York Times) A book soon followed, three more were soon released. Minimal wear at spine extremities otherwise a fine copy in the original (price-clipped, otherwise fine) color pictorial dust jacket. Housed in a scarlet linen slipcase.Kay Thompson (1909-1998) is best known today as the creator of the Eloise children's books but she began her career as a composer, musician, actress, singer, and vocal coach to such stars as Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, and June Allyson. Thompson lived at the Plaza Hotel in New York City - home to Eloise. The books were partly inspired by the antics of her goddaughter, Liza Minnelli, daughter of Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli. But later, when asked if this was true Thompson replied, "I am Eloise." The four books in the series, illustrated by Hilary Knight, are Eloise (Simon & Schuster, 1955), Eloise in Paris (Simon & Schuster, 1957), Eloise at Christmastime (Random House, 1958) and Eloise in Moscow (Simon & Schuster, 1959). Each follows the adventures of the precocious six-year-old Eloise. All were bestsellers upon release and have been adapted into television projects. She also composed and performed a Top 40 hit song, "Eloise" (Cadence Records, 1956). Film buffs will recall Thompson as Maggie Prescott, the flamboyant, Diana Vreeland-like editor of the fashion magazine, Quality, in Funny Face (1957) starring Fred Astaire as a photographer ala Richard Avedon, which opens with Thompson's now famous showpiece number, "Think Pink!". Book Description: New York: Simon & Schuster, 1955. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. Knight, Hilary (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by Hilary Knight. First edition, first printing. Publisher's cream cloth, with an illustration of Eloise to the front board in black, lettered in black and maroon; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with Knight's illustration of Eloise drawing on a vanity mirror to the front panel, black and white photographs of the author and illustrator to the rear panel. Very good, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine and board edges, fold-out page (13-16) slightly loose at the head but still firmly bound into the text block, bright and clean pages; price-clipped dust jacket, with some wear and minor chipping to the extremities, small chip to the spine head, some rubbing to the hinges, light toning to the spine and rear panel, a few light spots of minor soiling to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a clean copy of the classic children's book. Eloise: A Book for Precocious Grown Ups is the first book in Kay Thompson's series featuring the rambunctious child protagonist Eloise, a resident of the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Eloise, like the author herself, is vivacious, charming, and spunky; Thompson herself was an actress and singer, as well as one of the first women to wear fashionable pants - a bold move in the 1940s. Indeed, while many cite her goddaughter Liza Minnelli as an inspiration for the character, Thompson insists that she, also a resident of the Plaza, largely based Eloise on herself. The other novels in Thompson's series feature Eloise in a series of adventures and include Eloise in Paris (1957), Eloise at Christmastime (1958) and Eloise in Moscow (1959).
