Item Description: New York: Simon and Schuster, 1955-9, 1955. 4 volumes, quarto. Original paper covered pictorial boards, pictorial endpapers, complete with dust jackets. Overall a very good set with evenly toned spines, mild wear to extremities, "Eloise" with Twentieth Century Fox film research library stamp to the front pastedown, light spotting to panels, shallow chipping along edges, "Eloise in Paris" with light chipping along lower edges, spotting to panels, small chip to mid of spine, "Christmastime" with previous ownership to front endpaper. Doll in great condition with a little soiling mostly to hair, original box opened but with Eloise label still intact. All volumes are illustrated throughout the text by Hilary Knight. First editions, first printings. Eloise in Paris with a lengthy inscription from Kay Thompson, "for my darling Fairfax with a little petite of everything thats choisie, because because because, you are! Love love love Kay and Moi Eloise xx" Eloise in Moscow signed by the illustrator on the title page. All four Eloise books with the original Eloise doll and her packaging. The doll, which made its appearance Thanksgiving of 1957, was a huge success, thanks in to part by Life Magazine and FAO Swartz picking up on it. Inventory of the first doll was gone before Christmas, leaving many wanting on Christmas morning. The doll was manufactured by Hol-Le Toys, there were two versions planned a 21 inch and 43 inch version, only the 21 inch was produced. At the time most dolls had plastic faces, however the lead designer of the Eloise doll felt it was important for her to be made from silk. Everything down to her hair was carefully and skilfully designed. On her debut she retailed for $6.00 and was produced in a factory of only 45 workers, who could not meet the demands.- Antique Doll Collector. A truly scarce item. Bookseller Inventory # 106361

Minimal wear at spine extremities otherwise a fine copy in the original (price-clipped, otherwise fine) color pictorial dust jacket. Housed in a scarlet linen slipcase.Kay Thompson (1909-1998) is best known today as the creator of the Eloise children's books but she began her career as a composer, musician, actress, singer, and vocal coach to such stars as Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, and June Allyson. Thompson lived at the Plaza Hotel in New York City - home to Eloise. The books were partly inspired by the antics of her goddaughter, Liza Minnelli, daughter of Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli. But later, when asked if this was true Thompson replied, "I am Eloise." The four books in the series, illustrated by Hilary Knight, are Eloise (Simon & Schuster, 1955), Eloise in Paris (Simon & Schuster, 1957), Eloise at Christmastime (Random House, 1958) and Eloise in Moscow (Simon & Schuster, 1959). Each follows the adventures of the precocious six-year-old Eloise. All were bestsellers upon release and have been adapted into television projects. She also composed and performed a Top 40 hit song, "Eloise" (Cadence Records, 1956). Film buffs will recall Thompson as Maggie Prescott, the flamboyant, Diana Vreeland-like editor of the fashion magazine, Quality, in Funny Face (1957) starring Fred Astaire as a photographer ala Richard Avedon, which opens with Thompson's now famous showpiece number, "Think Pink!". Item Description: Simon & Schuster, New York. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Printing. 1955. Stated first printing. Thin large 4to cream cloth-covered pictorial boards stamped in red and black. Spine and board edges just lightly sunned as usual, else a fine, clean copy, one of the best we've seen, in a price-clipped dust jacket which is near fine and unusually bright with just a tiny chip at the upper spine and some light spots on the front and rear panels. This copy with an inscription on the front free endpaper reading, "Dearest Cravers - / What Would Happen / if Eloise and Dennis got / together? / Love, / Kay". Although this would appear to be in Kay Thompson's handwriting, we cannot verify this, and this copy is being sold on the assumption that the inscription is not Thompson's. An unusually nice copy, uncommon in the first edition. Bookseller Inventory # 4419
